Here is my kit:
First aid kit capable of handling all sorts of flesh wounds, burns etc. Probably cost $90 but worth it.
Ten 21 litre bottles of water. In a rotation with newer stock so the water does not grow any bacteria.
Appropriate amount of canned and dried food.
Probably 15 LED lights with rechargeable cells (all charged) + sets of primary batteries once they are dead.
Wooden matches.
Two full 20 lb Propane tanks.
Battery powered SW/MW Sony radio c/w two extra sets of batteries.
Space blankets, sleeping bags, tents and back packs if required.
MOST IMPORTANT is to own a regular old telephone that plugs directly into the wall and does not require a battery or AC to power it. It is a little known fact that when our grid goes down that our land lines continue working off a - 48 DC power. Those Telus buildings you see all over the place have their back up systems in the basement. They are situated geographically to support the entire local neigbourhoods.
Probably the only reason I have kept an account with Telus but I digress
If the power goes out you can pick up your plain ordinary telephone you will still get a dial tone if you request it. It may take from a minute up to five minutes if you just stay on the line. It is part of the North American Telecom standard that you will get a dial tone as requested.
