Hm that's interesting. I would imagine these practices are still there in downtown? Otherwise what are the pimps doing now? Also I imagine you can't crowd the strolls too much otherwise it attracts attention? Though I've heard the stories of there being many hookers near Clark and Hastings... Though wtf did you do for 20 bucks?! Find a shady corner behind a dumpster and shag for 10 minutes?! Gross.
So otherwise did they just get in the car and find parking and do it in the car? Was there incall? How bout the walking clients?
There is a movie called Hookers on Davie you can find online. It's from a time before the local gov pushed the women out of the West End in to the Downtown East Side. There were generally 3 levels of strolls along with "kiddie corners" and then the male stroll (gay males). There was a high, medium and low track & the price and quality of women generally fit in the category but not always. Most of the sex that took place was car dates. The 'date' was simply about the act of sex & usually quite quick. What you need to understand is that cruising the stroll is more about risk and thrill seeking than it is actual sex. The cruisers are thrill seekers, rolling the dice, wondering what they might get at the next block. Pull up, find a dark spot, fuck, and go.
The majority contributor to the end of street walking by upscale women was the internet & our current batch of nasty drugs. A coke addiction took a while to take you to skin and bones. Meth, salts, etc, takes 6 weeks. Girls went down fast.
If you read the book "Diary of a Runaway" by Evelyn Lau, she speaks about the street scene in Vancouver around Expo 86. I believe she also mentions the kiddie stroll. That was right near Chinatown. Over in Calgary it was called Popcorn alley and was on 10th Ave. It was named that because the doors of the brothels slammed shut so much in a night it sounded like popcorn. The stroll is mostly gone & all that are left are survival sex workers.
And the pimps? They got smart phones and moved online.
