I was about 8 or 9 and my parents bought me a tool set - hammer, saw, screwdriver, couple other tools. All were kid size, and used it whenever I had a chance, helping my dad fix things around the house, and even when we did an addition to the house when I was 11.
I’m about to turn 40 and I still have the saw and 3 of the screwdrivers.

when I was 17, my uncle passed away in December. Him and I were very close, so it hit me super hard. So my aunt gave me my uncle’s pinball machine that Christmas to help remember him by. It was actually broken the the last handful of years, but I got it fixed this summer. I still stand at it and have strong memories of being over at their place, listening to classic rock way to loud, eating sour cream and onion chips and playing pinball. Even had my first sip of beer while playing pinball…

When I was 14 or 15 my parents got me a Heathkit short wave receiver. I put the kit together and still use it once in a while to this day. More recently, 2015, Christmas present to self, a visit with Cherry|Soda, my first visit back into SPs since the early 80s.

Nine years old I had just started skiing the previous year sporadically but still into hockey. I wanted a pair of Lange skates with the new plastic booth for Christmas. I had cut out an image from a magazine and laminated it on a piece of cardboard to hang beside my bed to make sure my parents were aware ...

I received a pair of Blizzard skis to my astonishment which sent me on my way to become a ski fanatic for the following decades . Good thing my parents didn't listen or paid attention...lol

Rock’em Socke’em robots. Circa late ‘60’s. OMG, my bro’s and pals “knocked each others blocks off” for days. Peed ourselves when the head popped up at an unexpected turn. Even classmates I didn’t like showed up for a turn, and we giggled like children should.

i think this is a Candian thing. We like our sports and our passed-times rough so we can vent it out, and bond over the experience together.

So parents, stop with the new age crystals for young Zack. Get him the most violent engaging gift you can find, and society will make it all right. I know, weird right?

I don't think I appreciated this much when I was a kid, but every year my siblings and I got a mandarin orange in our stockings.

My parents always made it a big deal that everyone sat and had breakfast before opening presents, but we got our stockings with the oranges in them so we could eat them with our breakfast.

When I was old enough to understand, my dad explained that he grew up in the great depression, most of his Christmases the only gift he or his siblings received was an orange, and they thought it was the best treat in the world and they felt very fortunate to receive one. In tougher years 1 orange for the entire family had to do.

It was important to my dad that he remembered that from his youth and reminded us to be thankful for all our blessings, especially the big pile of presents under the tree each year.

I continue this tradition with my kids, and looking back, I think those oranges were the best gift my dad ever gave me.

Every yr I receive it, a phenomenal life.
A healthy body, friends , an apartment I really like, plenty of food, live in a free country, I can afford to buy the people in my life gifts, I have enough money to live a pleasant life

There is no gift greater than that .

Chemistry set. As a child I thought wow, now I can make bombs and defend myself from the monsters under the bed etc..

actually - could probably only make crystals and maybe a volcano. But I still loved it.

And ironically barely scraped by in organic chemistry years later.

I was blessed to have so many wonderful gifts over the years.
A great sled for sliding down hills.
Xcountry skis.
Skates.
Bicycle.

But my favorite of all was my first wrench and socket set. I always loved wrenching on things, and now had my very own tools, I'll never forget that day.

Just don't tell us your sled was named "Rosebud."

A bicycle for me too! Like Charlee said, that first sense of freedom and independence. It was early 80’s so a sweet BMX with mags. It was the same year or maybe year after Spielberg’s E.T, so I felt cool like one of those kids on their bikes.
In my childhood, a bicycle was also a cool gift, and this year I gave myself a bicycle Tomasso :)

My parents once gave me a blanket for my birthday. It is already shabby, but still I always take it with me to a new place of residence. Always reminds me of home
