What employers can find with SIN

I was just wondering what your employers can find out with your social insurance number. If you have misleading dates of employment on your resume, would the company be able to find out with your SIN?

I always ask WHY and then unless they can show me that they are allowed... I may ...or walk out.

Thanks for the detailed info. Badger. So just to clarify, YES the employers asking for my consent for investigation along with my SIN can find out if I lied about employment dates?

Employers should not be using SIN to match employee records.
It is only intended for income reporting.
Posting employee records online with SINs would be a breach of privacy.

Employers would have to ask for permission and the Govt would in turn have to ask your explicit permission.

Thanks badbad. But the company who might hire me asked me to sign a consent form and hand over my SIN so they can do credit rating checks, criminal record checks, etc. The form also asked for consent to do employment history checks. So I was wondering if they can extract my real employment dates with my social insurance number? Would the Govt still have to ask for my permission?

Criminal checks are done by the police, not by an employer. No employer can access the law enforcement data for a criminal background check. Any file on you will not be indexed by your SIN anyway.

You better go over that consent form with a fine tooth comb. Some companies have asked for passwords to social media sites. That is ridiculous.

As an employer we don't do anything with SIN but use it for government/tax purposes. However, I have HR screen all resumes and we do check work history and education claims. Over the years we have not hired and/or let people go based upon finding falsified information. We have a clause in our employee contracts that calls for actions to occur, up to dismissal without recourse, if such falsification is discovered.

Simple solution - don't lie on your resume.

For most purposes they can find nothing with your SIN. They are entitled to see it (along with work permits if you have a SIN that starts with a 9) to ensure you are allowed to work in Canada. They also need it for reporting to CRA and for ROEs etc.

Doesn't sound out of the ordinary to me. we use this website before hiring someone and it asks for that information
