Add a couple of days to your trip and hit:

Wild Wadi water park - just the scale of water themed fun in the middle of the desert will have you in awe and likely shaking your head what unreal waste (think of the evaporation per minute) of a precious resource in a region which will also remind you that money in excess leads to things like water parks in the desert.

Go sand boarding (can you snowboard?). It is a blast. Don't ignore the optional goggles. Prepare to wash sand out of places you didn't know you had.

Helicopter or hot air balloon - you won't be able appreciate the amount of opulent building from the ground and the rates for getting in the air are surprisingly good.

Women - don't even think about it anywhere public OTHER than the Dubai Mall which is a pick up mecca. Never go back to your hotel together but once there, you can have visitors and there was never a hint of need for monetary exchange. Was one of the easiest places to pick women up anywhere I have been outside of Europe or Montreal.

I've wanted to go there for years. I really, really want to go to the Dubai World Cup! I do know of some pooning resources there if you're interested.
Are you talking about World Cup Soccer? I think it is going to be in Qatar... which really is part of UAE. They might have some games in Dubai or Sharjah too.

and........... No Pooning At All! I am off pooning... for now. Also, while in Dubai, I am not going to be .......... alone enough for pooning.

:)

Dubai is interesting. I spent some time there. I wouldn't practice this hobby there however.

That article is really suspect.

Its author has been shown guilty of plagiarism, and of passing off his own figments of fantasy as fact. His newspaper suspended him.

The exposed plagiarism led to his being forced to return the 2008 Orwell Prize he won for reporting, and later was a contributing factor in his leaving The Independent.

The most modern city in the middle east. A lot of western influence however still a very Muslim city laws and expectations. The city is phenomenal however the "workers city" on the outskirts can be a very dangerous place.

Mixture of ultra rich and extremely poor.

Just read this:

It can be a pioneer paradise or a real problem. The royal hotel which is at the end of Mankool street in the older part of Dubai is wonderful. The entrance is off the Main Street on the other side of the area from where Starbucks is. On the ground floor is a bar full of Chinese gals who will look after you just fine. But if you have more exotic tastes then head up the elevator to the top floor. After being checked for weapons you can enter a large bar area where maybe over 100 gals will be working. They will go back to your hotel if the hotel allows guests. You must pass by a security desk at most hotels and they we'll take her passport copy and file it with your room record. But after that it is all ok. Hotels run by strict Moslems will not allow girls to visit nor alcohol sales on their property. But many hotels do permit it. Don't walk back to the hotel with anyone nor show any affection in public. Street gals are around too. Particularly on Mankool.

Other than that buy a ticket for the world tallest building and see Dubai mall and mall of the Emirates has the ski hill. Great city. Cheap if you are careful. Taxis are cheap. Public transit has been installed since I was there.

Dubai has extremes of rich and poor, I never claimed otherwise. And it has de facto slave labour.

But the article you posted is known to contain a lot of exaggerations (perhaps outright lies) about the risks that average Westerners face there.

Almost sounds like you are trying to sweep the issue under a rug.

How about this video proof?

Yes Dubai is a most amazing Emirate and city, (its a city state with its own king and a union with the UAR similar to the common market - unique as it has its own king and a veto on anything that the UAR decides - so in effect its a country. Yes it is a mix between ultra rich and poor, but it is not dangerous. It may be the safest city you will ever go to. Even in the so called, unsavory parts, I walked extensively feeling completely safe. The reason is that there is a population of 8 million, of which only one million are citizens. Anyone can go there to look for work but can only stay there if and while they are employed. They must sign a contract of 3 years with 2 year extensions and cannot switch employers. Also at age 65 they cannot retire there, they must leave. this applies even if born there as birth does not give citizenship. So in effect it is a city of 7 million foreign workers mostly from the India subcontinent, with large segments from Philippines and Africa. All business must be majority owned by citizens, so they do not work only collect royalties for being figureheads, or pensions. the workers get no pensions and must leave when their job expires or they are terminated. of if they commit a crime - for that reason there is no vagrancy and no crime. The citizens are rich and the rest have jobs. Yes some (probably most) are low paying but if they do anything wrong and are reported they are kicked out of the country. Our taxi driver tells how a week earlier he had stopped on the road to relieve himself, He was reported and given a fine of one months wage with a notation, that if further reported he would be expelled. Workers cannot complain as if fired, even if the employer is completely at fault, it it they that are expelled.

I spent a week there and it was not enough time - one day walking the Indian quarter, one day walking the African quarter, one day for the fake goods markets, one day for the worlds biggest malls (one has an indoor ski hill) a day or 2 for abu dabi, (the adjoining emmerate which is richer than dubai and has Ferrari world, and a grand prix race track - - a day for the desert, and dune rides a day or 2 or 3 for the beach, with fine sand and warm water; a day for new Dubai with wall to wall super expensive cars and restaurants - the worlds tallest building, the worlds largest mall, golf courses international championships at almost all sports; the berg, a 7 star hotel that costs $150 for afternoon tea - no visitors unless you have lunch, tea or dinner or stay there) a day at the gold souk - with more gold on display than you have ever seen in your life. In effect you can visit 4 or 5 different cultures simply by visiting differences parts of the Emirate

When I asked about Dubai, I had no intention about learning the political or socio-political side of it.

I do appreciate the input by everyone, but can we stick to the tourist side of it. I am familiar with opulence of the place but I am just passing through it for about two three days only to move on to Europe. Also, I have NO intentions of pooning there (I am not going to be alone ;) ).

So I would appreciate if someone could just give me some tips about hotels, famous bazaars, tourist spots, transportation etc .. and many of you have given some useful suggestions and thank you for that.

There is a hotel I visited that has a roof top bar, completely open view of the sky. I don't remember which hotel it was, but it was one of the nicer hotels on the beach. If you are able to find it, I recommend trying that.
Also if you have a full day available do the Sand dune convoy. You jump sand dunes in GMC Yukons, and get to visit a camel and falconry bedouin camp. The night is finished off with dinner and entertainment from belly dancers, and shisha pipe smoking.
The Mall of the Emirates is interesting, but I would skip unless you want to do a lot of shopping...or go indoor downhill skiing.
