I am not quite sure how other people catagorize a movie as a "Classic", but I certainly can argue that most of the movies listed in this thread are far from "classics".

Maybe, this thread should define classic. I'll start with a few. Casablanca of course, The Graduate, Citizen Kane (although not a big fan myself), and some that might not be that well known with this crowd. 12 Angry Men, The Ox-Bow Incident, Shane, High Noon --I like westerns, Gone With the Wind, almost all of Frank Capra movies ie Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, It Happened One Night, It's a Wonderful Life, Meet John Doe, and of course most Hitchcock movies.

OK, take it away.

I agree with you that some of the 'classics' listed so far are not classic, but listing some examples does not 'define' a classic.
Just go with the flow and list yours like I did.

I recall reading somewhere a movie moves into the "classic" category when it is over 25 years old. Of course, it has to be a good movie to be a classic.

Scary that but Star Wars: definitely classic. Indiana Jones. Hell, Risky Business.

PS. If anyone lists the first Indiana Jones movie as a classic they can't stand, they're brain dead. ;)

I can definitely take or leave the Graduate. When I watched it wasn't sure what all the fuss was about. Also, I have to agree with corriguy and violet re Citizen Kane. It's not horrible buy wow is it ever overrated. It isn't even his best film. I'd re-watch Welles' Touch of Evil 10 times before I'd re-watch Citizen Kane once. Touch of Evil, now that's a movie!

The film that popped out for me is The Seventh Seal. (Death plays chess with a guy --in swedish) What a boring pointless movie. It has a reputation for being beautiful and profound, but really it's just painfully boring. To sit through the entire movie is to have you mind, eyes & butt lose the will to live.

Anyway, great thread, Violet. I've been lurking on the forum for a couple of weeks now, but had to end my lurking ways to give my two cents.

or Deliverance....

now just hang on a dang minute there, pardner... i'll have you know i've owned deliverance in vhs, dvd, blu ray AND the book!

this CLASSIC movie is one of my ATF's!

DANG! sonofagun, dang... the book is by far and away the best, because it gets inside the characters' heads and explores what they are going through mentally as well as the physical rigours of the drama

but when jon voight finally understands that burt reynolds isn't going to save the day any more, and picks up his weapon and starts the climb to the top of the canyon... brrrrr... still makes the hairs on my neck stand up

for a pic that more closely represents what the flick is all about, how about this one?

look at the expressions as they view the recently killed corpse of the hill-billy rapist with the arrow sticking out of his back!! dang, that's CLASSIC stuff, man!

and the music...

no, no badge - give yer head a shake pardner... :)

Good thread.

Some have already been mentioned.
"Rosebud!" - Really did not appreciate Citizen Kane. Probably would need to learn more about the history of it to do that, but don't think the movie is worth the effort.
"I'm sorry, I can't let you do that Dave." - If I ever suffer from insomnia, I'll purchase 2001 a space odyssey. Total snoozefest.

Some that I haven't seen mentioned yet.
Blade Runner. Just horrible.
Lawrence of Arabia ran a little too long for my tastes.

Recently watched Network for the first time. Felt it was too much.....Acting!
gotta disagree with you on blade runner, got that one in vhs, dvd, blu ray and the book 'do androids dream of electric sheep' too

i won't get into it but it is dang good, pardner!

I gotta disagree with you there. So many fantastic lines have come out of that movie; it's a children's tale that adults love. It's a chick flick that guys dig. Why?

Three words. Andre the Giant.

Oh and 13 words: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

LOL. Luv that movie! Not sure if it's in the classic realm yet, but it should be.
