I was up in Fort McMurray this week for business and was listening to the local radio station.

It was mentioned on the radio that on a recent Westjet flight coming into Fort McMurray the stewardess made a joke to the tune of: "Who here doesn't want to be in Fort McMurray?" Apparently almost everyone on board raised their hand.

It turns out that the mayor of Fort McMurray was also on this same flight and didn't like Westjets sense of humour. It got back to Westjet public relations and the radio station called them to discuss the issue. The PR person said that some people react positive to humour while others may be offended. He said that he would discuss it with their flight crew for future reference.

One note that caught my attention is that the radio station did interview the mayor about the experience. She said that Fort McMurray is one place that already has a negative image by many people (who don't even live there). I will agree with her on that point. I don't live in Fort McMurray, but many people will put it down just from what they see on TV. On the other hand, many people who live there are quite happy and enjoy what it has to offer.

Has anyone else had any other experiences with Westjet?

Some people are taking their lives too seriously and spending too much attention on the small stuff. Gotta relax and focus on things that matter more - then life would be more FUN. :) :)

I love the flight crews on Westjet, I'd rather someone tell a flop of a joke than no joke at all and have the personality of Air Canada flight personnel.

I travel Westjet specifically because of their sense of humour. Air Canada seems to be close to pricing many times, and despite having family working for AC, I still travel Westjet.

Westjet and JetBlue have the coolest flight crews. The guy from Salt Lake City who developed both airlines during their initial phase now owns low-cost airline AZUL in Brazil. :) :)

I love flying Westjet and Southwest airlines for this exact reason. The flight crew are humorous and fun to be around. They make flying fun!

On a West Jet flight to Las Vegas a few months back we were fortunate enough to have an awesome flight crew. The banter between them and the Captain was hilarious at times. It made flying through the sky in a metal tube at 500 mph and 39000 feet less scary for me . The landing was amazing as well, i couldn't even feel the landing it was that smooth. The Captain said it was the smoothest landing he has ever experienced.

I love it when they have some sort of personality.
Once to Vegas through allegiant, we had a very scary landing.
The guy next to me even grabbed my arm.

The attendant, comes on the speaker as we taxi to the terminal.
Telling us "Bathrooms will be directly on the left as you leave the plane, for anyone that might have had a little accident during that landing." The whole plane was laughing. Then said something about the pilot being brand new.

I still remember a few years back when the Westjet plane I took was landing in YVR, the cute flight attendant said:

" For those of you that are visiting, Welcome to Vancouver. " :)

" For those of you who live here, GOOD FOR YOU!! " :thumb:

As someone who lived in Fort McMurray for 18 years, allow me to say for the record that the town is a cesspool dipped in a septic tank.

if I hadn't been living so far away that I was excited to eat at the Moxies in Fort Mac. it would have had zero redeeming qualities whatsoever. It reminded me of a slightly bigger Duncan, without the scenery.

Westjet.. *sigh* as good as the crew that is on the plane at the time you are flying.. no better, and often worse.

I guess someone pissed in the mayor's cereal that day.... I've always loved flying with westjet as I fly frequently to Toronto from Van and have always enjoyed my flight with westjet. I highly doubt that this will deteriorate any future sales

Then you just haven't flown them enough. Granted, their best crews are amazing, but the quality control on their hiring process has gone to shit as they have gotten bigger. I have unfortunately flown them more often lately in the past 6 weeks or so thanks to some very cheap business clients and I have had some stews who would be much more at home on AC, surly and rude. I have also seen some downright piss poor customer service. Can't wait to get back on an AC flight, never thought I would say that, even if it's just for the free movies.
Agreed, they grew too fast and have some staff suffering from quality control issues.

Still never had a AC crew worth their paycheque

Dealing with problems at WJ is not too bad, AC = bugger off westerner. A serious issue, but still no reply since 1999

Planes be they 737 or 319/320/321 are pretty much the same, no crappy Dash 8's or CRJ or ERJ's with WestJet

Overall, I'd rather take Greyhound (decapitation risk included) than fly AC

Support Western Canada, fly WestJet

Fort McMurray is a shithole.

The 21st century equivalent of dirty, polluted, morally bankrupt factory shanty in the 1800's.

I guess then Fort McMurry is the only place she could get to be mayor ...
The woman mayor of Mackenzie is such an up beat mayor also but it is a nice small quite town in the middle of nowhere also.
