Im mostly going to the bank machine but had a new bank card to activate today. Was told to take off my baseball cap which was fine. But the security guard also told me no smartphone use while in the bank. Said something about filming the bank. I said you gotta be kidding me right? Told the security guard im not staying very long and not coming back. The teller comes back with the card and i told her to cancel my bank account.

This was at royal bank location

Royal Bank sucks......................recently went to a Branch with a General Power of Attorney, specifically states no restrictions or conditions. Royal Bank decides to impose it's own conditions based on "Bank Policy." Guess who is suing the Bank and has closed out all related accounts ?

Same thing happened to me at a CIBC branch. Security dude wouldn't let me in cause I was wearing sunglasses and a hat cause it was sunny out. Took of the sunglasses, then he demanded I take off the hat. Was really surprised, never happened to me before anywhere else.

I refused to and told him im just here to pick up a bank card. If they wanted to they can bar me from my bank and close my bank account(which i did close with the bullshit hassle today). With his annoying nonsense about filming the bank with my smartphone was beyond stupid. Obviously i cant prove anything because it's he said i said.

That's why i love dealing with just bank machines and online banking. They go overboard after taking some security guard course.

Wow that's ridiculous.
I've been an RBC client for years, and have had my share of run-ins.
My friend posted today on her fb that she had the same problem, they made her take off her sunglasses. She was there with her 8yr old daughter...It seems to be a trend?

Could be a reaction to the anonymous "hoodies" who have been featured in the TV news the past couple of years. (You have something to hide from surveilance cameras, then pull up your hoodie, I guess.)

On reflection, on entering my bank, I remove my sunglasses AUTOMATICALLY. I must be a pre-programmed lawful citizen. Or one who considers and understands changes that our eroding societal behaviors dictates!

And I am ABSOLUTELY a non-fan of RBC. Was a "favored" business client of significant substance for many years. (My branch manager used to come to MY office twice a year trying to get me to borrow corporate buckos!!!) And then RBC lowered the corporate boom when the first mini-recession in 50 years hit B.C., back in the 1980's. Very nasty!! My companies survived, in spite of RBC's actions, and when I discovered my companies no longer required an operating line from the bank (by virtue of positive monthly cash flow) I fired the RBC's arse "right out my office door." And much to the branch's dismay. Scotia Bank was the ultimate beneficiary of RBC's short-sighted attitude, providing me with the hefty capital to buy out an existing business partner. Sorry if my rant hijacks this thread's original thrust. RBC still gives me the red flag!!

I went into an RBC with my friend’s card and pin in order to deposit some money that I owed into his account. The teller accused me of attempting to commit fraud and threatened to call the police. You have to be careful of those dastardly fraudsters trying to deposit money into your account.

I have often deposited money directly into an SP account with out a card. You just go to the teller with the account number and account name, and make the deposit, transit number needed too. Email banking resolves a lot too.

But never run into this sunglass thing, but yes, I can understand the logic of making your face clearly visible. Next ATM's might be demanding the same, they all photo you when at the bank. Not the little private ATM's though.

Yes, Royal has been difficult over the years, but that difficulty translates to security in dealings, and the bank policy has often been set related to bad situations in the past. It just depends on how the situation strikes you.

For me, I had difficulty many years ago in setting up a corporate account with the bank, while Scotia bank seduced me with their easy approach. Cost the Royal well over a million in business over 10 years. Honest years at that. Now I find Scotia bank is so tight with their email transfers, $1500 limit daily and light monthly sum limit, that I can't effectively use it. Royal on the other hand lets me mail a couple of grand in one email. Never had a limit error message yet.

ONLINE BANKING, WHY YOU SO GOOD?
I wish that guys would do online banking as payment more often!
I dident even know that was an option with most SP's!
I rather dislike the whole cash envelope thing. 90% of the time I don't have envelopes and have to origami something up at the last minute.

I would suggest that electronic banking only be done with trusted clients. I have used it on first dates to buy more time, but cash was upfront first time. So some trust was developed first. But yes, not having to stop at a bank machine or bank first before an appt, has real advanatages, and likewise saving the SP a trip to the bank with all this cash is often appreciated too. I did use if with a first date though, lately but in Alberta, for an overnight deal that was kind of unexpected. So paid the gal via email, we just waited 20 minutes till she got the message and processed it, and then paid the second half in the morning. She never bothered to wait after breakfast, but did text later to say it arrived. The bank had already messaged that the amount was withdrawn.

So yes very convenient.

RBC has been a joke for years, CIBC, TD, Bank of Montreal, scotia bank etc. It's my money not yours. I have deposited it and placed it in your trust. If I need $1000 then I need $1000. It's in my f**king account because it's mine. It's not yours even though you treat me like it is and you nickle and dime me with every transaction like it is . Then treat me like a peasant asking for more groul, when I request a few of my sheckles.

That's why I deal with Credit unions, tellers and staff are far more friendly that at your average bank.

Other thing is I can take money out of my credit union account at ANY credit Union with no extra fee charged. Just try and do that with your bank.

A long time ago I set up a savings account at ING direct. I love it My Ex doesn't know anything about it.

My money I Earn gets paid directly deposited to my credit union account.

From there I pay my bills. However, 10% of what I earn every 2 weeks goes directly in my ING account. That's my fun money I use that for myself. For setting up dates with SP's etc.

It's my secret account that no-one knows about except me because I don't get a bank statement it's all online. I access it online and transfer money back to my credit union account.
Ugh... not a fan of Royal or TD, and I despise CIBC - been with ScotiaBank for 10 years now, and couldn't be happier...

Considering bank robbers usually coming into branch wearing some combination of hoody, hat and or sunglasses. For bank security will ask some of it be taken off... Never hear about no phone use. but camera can be a concern becasue photographing bank layouts.

OK so let's be honest...

Is it really that big of a deal to take your sunglasses and hat off, as you can imagine it will make the staff at the branch feel much safer..

and seriously if you need to be on your phone nattering to your partner/wife/client/babysitter/mistress then don't do it in a bank, it is so rude, cell phones have taken over. I enjoy leaving mine in the car, if it's that important the caller will leave a voicemail.

Ridiculous!

I admire that you stuck to your principles but closing you bank account over that seems like an overreaction. That and, what Papa Chongo and vancouver 1992 said.

DING..DING..DING...we have a winner who replied with a logical response.....and I would like to add I am sick to death of the I-Phone zombies of modern society...people who not only use them constantly for online applications but are also tethered to them via earbuds....fucking I-Phone zombies.

Paying electronically leaves a paper (electron?) trail. That could be unfortunate for the SP if she has been less than diligent in paying her taxes. Better to pay in cash.
