Warning-Counterfeit Bills

This morning I went out to have breakfast. I had a craving for eggs,
sausages, pancakes, etc. I know, I know it's a heavy meal. I usually
stick to lighter fare.

My meal came to a little under $10 & I gave my server a $20 bill.
I asked for $10 change. Well, the bill I received looks exactly like
a regular $10 bill. It has the indentations in all the right places.
Colors look right. I even dab some of my saliva to see if the ink
would rub off, it didn't. The hologram stripe is there too though the
colors look duller than the real bills. I also notice all around the
borders, there was a little bit of bleeding of some red dye/ink.
The biggest give-away is that the bill felt THICKER than usual.

I remember reading a warning on CL a few weeks ago that some
lady is using counterfeit bills around the downtown area. I know
losing $10-$20 is not a big deal but it still sucks to lose money.
Just a warning that crooks are getting more sophisticated these
days.

I asked my server for another bill & she happily obliged. I told
her about my suspicion. I hope she didn't pass it on to someone
else!

So how do you know for sure it was counterfit? Did the police or bank exam it?

You're Right-Not 100% Sure

No, there was no police there to inspect the bogus $10 but if you examine
your money, you'll notice that all bills have the same thickness except for
the "newer" $5 bill with the hologram stripe. This is the only bill that is
noticeably thicker than the rest.

But I have a STRONG suspicion the bill I returned wasn't the real deal.

you should tip better too if your bill came to just under 10 and you wanted ten dollars change back from a 20

Ha,ha. If you must know the actual bill came to $8.20. I gave her nearly
two dollars tip. I'm not a cheap tipper, I usually give at least 15%. In this
case I gave her at least 20% gratuity. I think this is reasonable. :)

The newer bills are thicker than the ones a few years ago. Bank of canada was getting the paper from a Canadian company but the bills were wearing out too fast. Now they use a German company. G&D, I forget what the company initials stand for and am to lazy to check.

The hologram stripe woven into the paper is damn hard to fake. Maybe someone washed the bill along with a red T-Shirt. Occam's razor if you will ...

I hope we're not going to have a tipping thread and what's appropriate or if one should tip at an all inclusive resort.

Downtown Vancouver
check for counterfeit new Canadian bills. Hold it up to the light, whoever's picture is on the bill, e.g. the Queen, you will see his/her image only with the light shining through the bill. Now on a ten I figure it would cost more than ten bucks to fake that--no economy of scale.
Or simply rub it on plain white paper. If the colour rubs off, it's real.
