A racist term.
i think we should always be careful when playing the 'racist' card. 'jap' is a contraction of the term 'japanese', in the same way as 'sp' is a contraction of the phrase 'service provider', and 'what's' is a contraction of the phrase 'what is'

yes, racial bigots sometimes use the contraction 'jap', but then other people who are not bigots at all also use the term

often times an accusation tells more about the accuser than the accused

i think a little less obsession with racism is needed in society :)

I disagree. The origin of the term "jap" stems from WWII. It was used to dehumanize the enemy not as a contraction for lazy writers.

you're right, it was - emphasis on the 'was' - however, the english language is a dynamic one, meaning it constantly changes. the term 'faggot' used to mean a bundle of sticks tied tightly together and used for construction purposes, but now it has a different primary meaning. 'sick' used to mean stricken with an illness, but if you say sick to a kid nowadays you will mean very cool. 'cool' used to mean kinda cold, kids nowadays use it in place of the word admirable. i could go on but i think you get the point of the term 'dynamic language'

i stick by my earlier observation

The English language is not "dynamic" when it comes to words dealing with race.
i beg to differ - when i was a kid, 'brother' meant a male sibling. now black guys refer to other black guys (only) as 'brothers' all the time

once you get to know your dictionary a bit better, you might be able to debate this topic hunka

you need to take a deep breath, take a pill, and get over yourself... and as i advised the other poster, 'quit playing the race card' we've got enough of that in this world

Seriously, I thought the original poster meant Jewish American Princess.

J.A.P.

Jewish American Princess; a bitchy, spoiled, golddigging Jewish female; Raised in a wealthy household, selfish, high-maintenance to the point of sheer insanity, stuck-up, the worst woman to date/marry on planet earth, yet deemed the most desirable by jewish mothers, who attempt to force them down the throats of their unsuspecting sons (all for the sake of perserving "Jewish Heritage.")

A Female who collects designer fashion items and status symbols (including men).
Bane to the existence of dating men. The key to an unhappy relationship for the rest of your life. Large breasted, outwardly attractive, internally spoiled, greedy, complicated, self-righteous, and obnoxiously difficult and overbearing jewish female.

References:
See www.jdate.com or refer to the "She put the Jew in Jewess Jeans" classic Saturday Night Live skit for examples.
"Jdate is full of J.A.P.'s."

"That girl is a total J.A.P."

"What an f_ing J.A.P.!"

Both versions are considered "offensive, derogatory slang", according to current dictionary definitions.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Jap

Jap (jp)
n. Offensive Slang
Used as a disparaging term for a person of Japanese birth or descent.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JAP (jp)
n. Offensive Slang
A Jewish-American girl or woman regarded as being pampered or overindulged.

I didn't really see any "new" less offensive definition for this term.

Oh yeah, the cowboy is correct. "Spic" is just a non-offensive contraction of Hispanic; "Flip" is just a non-offensive shortening of Filipino/Filipina; "Paki" is just a non-offensive contraction for Pakistani (or someone that looks like one to us).

And yes, us white folks are just tired of others "playing the race card." We can just call people what we want and ignore the whining from all the wogs out there.

If you are going to deride someone else for their defense of the language, maybe you are the one that needs to cite your sources.

It's a derogatory term and there isn't any need for it on this board. The English language is not "dynamic" when it comes to words dealing with race. What you have is people like you trying to justify using words as being cool, hip or trendy. Stop making excuses and show some class.

I totally agree. If someone feels that spelling out the full, correct word (Japanese) takes too long, is just toooooo much effort and insists on abbreviating it....then they can use the correct abbreviation, which is jpn.

As if it's our place to declare it's not racist or derogatory in spite of people who are directly affected saying it is offensive to them. We don't get to decide and especially not to tell them "too bad, the English language is dynamic so deal with it".

I mean, seriously.

Flip isn't short for Filipino, it's short for Fucking Little Island People, nigger is racial slur if it's used by non-blacks, same applies for flip.

You BIGOTS and the rest of your kind do not have the right to determine what is and isn't offensive to people.

While some will not mind being referred to with any of those words you mentioned, others still do and it is out of respect to them that you avoid the use of these derogatory terms.

How dare you RAC|ST PIGS!!!!!!!!!!
