vancouver getting worse?

Yea things do seem worse nowadays esp when I remember that we used to have a hockey team a few years ago.

You can tie your horse outside the Pub around here, have a few, then the damn animal will find its own way home, with you half passed out on his back...and animals always have the right of way in traffic laws.
They also are the ultimate chick magnet, a cop can't suspend your drivers permit, they cant impound your ride,all the fuel you need is growing right on the roadside , the only exhaust is considered organic fertilizer, and you won't get fined for not having winter tires.

In Vancouver you'd have to hire someone to walk behind you with a shovel to pick up that organic exhaust. Alternatively, I guess you could put a diaper on your horse, but somehow I just don't imagine you with a diapered horse.

My only complaint is that it's getting more and more crowded. Totally understand why everyone wants to be here though.
I still find people very friendly. I can, (and do) engage in conversations with random strangers everywhere I go.
Incredible number of options for dining out. Beautiful natural scenery.
Can't ever think of moving anywhere else.

I’m in full agreement. Would never move anywhere else. I grew up middle class in Van and still consider myself that now. Vancouver isn’t perfect, but then again neither is anywhere else. Every city has positives and negatives, Van is no different, except for the fantastic scenery.

Speaking of traffic, I had the terrible misfortune of hitting both Seattle and Portland rush hour last month. Holy shit, makes Van rush hour seem tame by comparison.

I would point out that visiting somewhere and living somewhere are two entirely different things. Outside of rush hour, Seattle and Portland traffic are pretty good. Just driving around Richmond regardless of day of week, when theres daylight seems like overcrowding.

You're right there are pros and cons to everywhere and a lot of it depends on preference. Like in Seattle, there is no state income tax, and in Portland there is no sales tax. What are some other positives to living in Vancouver, other than scenery?

I just find it difficult to believe that Vancouver will maintain its appeal going forward. I mean you have these millionaires from China, coming in buying up all the real estate, demo-ing it, rebuilding, and then cutting houses into micro apartments and renting/reselling at premium rates... I visited Victoria last year, and locals were telling me they grew up in vancouver and had to move out because it was just too expensive. I still like Vancouver, its just disturbing whats happening to it

Not enough bike lanes?Get rid of all of those cars?So basically you want EVERYONE to either ride a bike or take public transit?Your end goal is to eradicate the very idea of automobiles be they cars/trucks/suv's and even motorcycles and in so doing remove the liberty of people to go anywear they want at anytime they want because they can afford an automobile as well as the associated costs of ownership such as fuel/insurance/repairs etc.

Sounds pretty stupid to me but lets take a look at the alternatives.Walking to work comes to mind though it sucks balls if your job is in say Burnaby and you live in Surrey.It sucks even worse if on your WALK to work you get hit buy a car which blows out your knee and requires $20,000 worth of surgery...which will leave you whining about your hospital bill.

Well how about Public Transit....where someone like me gets to sit shoulder to shoulder with the dregs of society...you know what I mean...drug addicts/purse snatchers/smelly homeless bums and people who have crabs(fun fact for you crabs can jump 3 feet) if you sit next to the wrong person you get a case of the trouser tingles and I know I am more than willing to pay a little extra to avoid that.Next time you get on a bus take a look at a few faces....if you see a guy squirming and he looks like he is in discomfort he has crabs and he is suffering in silence.

So to round it up....ruptured knees and itchy crotches....2 of the hundreds of problems solved by the miracle of gasoline as well as the development of the automobile......and I sure as fuck dont want that LIBERTY taken away from ME.

lots of people require car for work so bikes and transit are not all that practical in those cases

Vancouver is a great city with a really bad geography for transit

downtown core is basically an island, other problem is the high percentage of professional services still concentrated downtown as compared to other cities

our rapid transit system didn't get going till 1986 (very late compared to other cities) and still as a few additions to get us to where it should be (such as dealing with UBC)

if Vancouver is as bad as some of the (glass is half empty) negative views suggest, why are we consistently ranked in the top 3 cities in the world every year....

depends on your perspective and view of course, one thing to be sure, Vancouver is an expensive city and if you havn't got ahead of the personal finances curve it can be a struggle

but he WAS thinking when he made it a sex industry safe zone...let's not forget how much the city has done for us....things aren't perfect but at least we are safe in our interactions here....vpd and CoV are both onside....safety for PEOPLE is paramount!

the other challenges being discussed are difficult and i know that our sex industry safe zone is not the only issue on the table but....it is nice to feel safe here....and it is in part due to cooperation of the CoV....

i recently discovered that there have been NO.....murders of sex workers in Vancouver since 2009.....that's 8 years with no murder.....

something to think about...immigration policy is not the responsibility of the city....it's the federales....so, let's not be too hard on ol' gregor...

What do you expect from a former Director of the Tides Foundation.Commie "save the planet" Robertson infiltrated City Hall and has done what his objectives are.Push bike lanes on the masses etc.Ban natural gas in parts of Vancouver recently and on the table/idiots drawing board is a "mobility tax"...meaning if you OWN a car you will get taxed even more.At the same time he is fighting against the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion reciting the enviro nutjob mantra of "dirty oil" and his talking points are mainly pipeline leaks and oil tanker spills....when was the last time a serious oil tanker spill happened in the Burrard Inlet?I dont recall one and if one happened it was well before the entire worldwide oil shipping industry mandated double hulls as industry standard.

If you want to re-elect an idiot whose political paymasters are the Tides Foundation which is a USA based Foreign special interest group bent against the development of Canada's energy sector and are funded by the Rockefeller family then go right ahead.By doing so you saddle yourself with a self confessed Socialist who lives under the mantra of "do as I say...not as I do"....fuck you might as well have David Suzuki for Mayor....I am sure he would be happy to teleconference for council meetings from his mansion that sits on the Capilano Yacht Club rather than drive to work...unless he does not get paid.

For some reason I can see the city create new various property taxes to discourage all the current home owners in the hopes of bulldozing all neighborhoods in favor of low rises or townhomes. Maybe in two generations most detached homes will be a thing of the past in Vancouver. It will be a city of condos and townhomes.

I agree it's shitty to have a social life here, but the climate, weather and green & wildlife is nice. I like gardening. It's a good place for hermits, like myself. I am lucky to be near my favorite stores too (not clothes or shoes etc).
