Or is any of Russian/China aggression due to the Western world economic stranglehold/control of patents (legal only in western countries), and financial control of markets/trade/infrastructure projects that could help other countries (not western countries). China's Belt and Road initiative is a direct competitor to this control by Western powers.
Canada main concern should be land security, especially up north, where there is untapped oil/gas fields, minerals etc. All standing around waiting for other countries to come around and set up camp.... For that we will need good equipment and a stronger attitude towards defense.
The Russians and Chinese definitely responded to US notions that it would be the only power of any significance, deciding the course of events in the world permanently. That that and every other nation with any self-respect saw that as a threat is 100% logical.
It's called the "Project For A New American Century" - basically, a treatise that formed the US grand strategy for the post Cold War world order, namely pre-emptively crippling the ability of any other nation of alliance to compete against them or challenge their authority over world affairs. It was written in the late 1990's, before 9/11 but predicted that the US could use some "Pearl Harbour-like event" to justify military incursions into nations that were not going along with the unipolar world order that the Americans envisioned.
This was not some conspiracy theory fictional document - this was written & published in the open, authored and endorsed by many leading figures among their national security & foreign policy community. The fact that the US government took it to heart and made it central to their vision of the future has been clearly evidenced by the direction & decisions taken by the Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden governments (and will be seen under Trumps second term, because it is bigger than him or any president). That includes everything from (in violation of arms control treaties) rushing ahead with things like missile defense and militarizing the orbital/space theatre of operations, things like the Iraq invasion, the overthrow of Libya, and attempted overthrows of Venezuela, Syria, and Iran, expanding NATO and turning the Baltic states & Ukraine into US client states, weakening Russia (the only peer competitor in nuclear arms) and aligning the world against China.
China, Russia, India, and other powers, also read this plan (like I said this is an open source document, not fictional and not clandestine), and they took it seriously once they began to see the US government acting as it after the time it was written. They definitely became more belligerent towards the US and "the west" because of it, began to re-emphasize military strength and make open and forceful challenges to the US & its allies. To them, it signalled that the US even in the absence of opposed ideology, has no interest in peace, only global power projection and total dominance - and these others are determined to fight against that, going "scorched earth" if necessary.
Now we live in the world all the forceful pushback against that plan created - a second Cold War.
I agree, Canada's main concern should be its own defense. rests, but backing off the Russians or Chinese from Canadian territory is next to useless if we then hand over control of our territory to someone else. Watch how quickly the noyion of fair treatment in "the west" disappears when our neighbour decides they want to break their treaties with us for their own advantage. The next round of trade negotiations with the US will prove that - and those politicians here who want to sideline Mexico to appease Trump may pretend to be "strong and "patriotic", but really they are gutless submissives, eager to surrender Canada's sovereignty.
The real "strong" attitude Canada needs is one of self-respect and making it clear we do not bow down to anyone.
