Have you seen how many Senators are in their 80s?

The US (and Canada) need term limits.

I am not a fan of the term limited for elected officials, for this reason:

The voters can get rid of them at any election. As long as they are able to get support from their party enough to get nominated, and get support from voters to be re-elected, why toss them out arbitrarily.
Do incumbents have an advantage? In some ways, but that seems more like a need for better campaign financing laws and restrictions against things like gerrymandering.
Perhaps the terms for them could be reduced in scope (6 years seems fucking weird), and the timing of their elections made more rational, but that still does not count as a term limit.
It's one of the few jobs where the "customers" are your real boss and can fire you if they get fed up.

The US Supreme Court, on the other hand, is a lifetime appointment, and as some of their recent actions make clear, some of them act like the legal system they supervise does not even apply to them.
They are appointed by elected political officials, but used basically to just act like partisans and warp the laws to whatever political side appointed them until they finally die; this also means the politicians can use them to make the kind of policies that could never pass muster with the voters if anyone ever bothered to ask them. The recent trend is to appoint people who have been judges for only a few months after coming straight out of activist factories like Liberty University.

It's such a broken system, designed for partisan manipulation and personal corruption.

(As for what Canada needs, I'll keep that confined to the Canada thread.)

The upcoming hearings for the shooting will be just like the Border hearings. " I have faith in the fine women and men of XXXX service". Repeated 100 times.
Not one person will be held to a standard. Cause it was an R that was potentially killed.

ppl in the crowd pointed out the shooter on the roof before shooting happened... What did the cops do.. Nothin... 1 officer went to roof and ran away when the shooter apparently aimed their gun at him (if this was a black person, would they not have been afraid to shoot)

Why did the secret service snipers have their guns trained on the threat but did nothing until after the 1st shots were made

Secret service had 4 sniper teams in place.. How did a single team not pick up a pending threat laying
200yards away from the stage trunp was on

As for the right wing media.... Its was an act of God that saved trump... So I guess according to their God, God doesn't care about hundreds of innocent children murdered in school shootings

There was no act of God.. Was trunp saved by a gust of wind that could've shot the shot off trajectory or was he lucky by turning his head at the right time and the shooter being unexperienced in long distance shooting

Sooo many questions that will never find any truth too sadly

Interesting. While being a registered Republican he donated money to a Liberal fundraising group the Progressive Turnout Project through the Democratic fundraising group Act Blue 3 years ago. Something is not squaring there. and of course he was unemployed. I smell Antifa.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/14/us/politics/trump-gunman-thomas-crooks.html

Well, Lee Harvey Oswald gave some volunteer time to some pro-Castro group, when all his real links were to far right groups and indicated he was an asset of some three-letter US agency

Not saying this kid is one, just that look at the 90% of what he was about, not the 10%.

And then after that, factor in that this guy was more like a highly motivated amateur, and not likely to possess and hardened coherent political coherence.

That does not even count the possibility the kid was insane, maybe doing things for reasons that bear no resemblance to logic.

I am an optimist and hope Americans will see this as an awakening and say enough is enough.
Speaking as a Canadian pessimist (or realist), I have never seen the leaders of that country ever learn any lesson from history; they only seem to try innovating new tactics to try and escape it. It's called exceptionalism, and good guy or bad guy, religious or secular, they all seem to have that deeply ingrained delusion. Especially the political ones.

Trump says, "Only God prevented the unthinkable from happening."

Maybe God just missed.

If he's protected by anyone, it's the other one, downstairs:
"Sorry about the ear old chap, but I've been a tad overstretched lately, protecting Netanyahu, Bolsonaro, and all the others of your species who follow my teachings.
if it's any consolation, the prophecies state the Antichrist will survive some kind of head wound before taking power globally, so chin up, lad. It could still be you if you play your cards right !"

You are so wrong...I'm not going to try to predict where this will all end or how it will all shake out, but thank whatever god you believe in, hairy thunderer or cosmic muffin, that this guy was a card carrying Republican and not a Democrat.

HE IS STRONG ON HIS MOUNTAIN !

Others saying an AR15 would have taken Trump’s head off just by grazing his ear. Like just fuck off and shut up.
Did they use the words "hydrostatic shock"? (It's like the dim mak to some folks.)

Tight through an ear is not unusual, considering it normally can punch right through an inch of wood and still be lethal on the other side.

A couple inches to the left, and a very different story: Pumpkin pieces all over the crowd.

Yeah, the lack of any officer on that roof to begin with is going to get some hard scrutiny..
I was in DC once, and visited the top of the Washington Monument, and was not allowed to go to one side of that tower, and the police officer guarding that window said it was because the US president was making a speech on the White House lawn, which is something like a mile away. They would not risk a rifle shooter even at a distance like that.

This was what, 150 m away, on a rooftop that anyone could climb up onto? Sounds like someone's getting in shit for this oversight. And if the story is true of an officer backing away rather than confronting a gunman, that's like a more political version of the Uvalde scandal.

Funny how advocating violence can backfire.
People should not be acting shocked that encouraging mass political violence leads to political violence.

After Gabrielle Giffords being shot, someone was attempting to kidnap and maybe murder the governor of Michigan, someone trying to murder Nancy Pelosi in her home (only she wasn't home so they bludgeoned her husband instead), armed thugs looming over dvoters at polling stations, calls to hang the VP and other own-party officials who didn't play along with denying the election loss, and finally thousands more armed thugs invade the capitol to prevent the legal handover of power.

Just like with so many other issues, the people who are shocked are the ones who either do not remember anything they see, or were not paying attention in the first place.

The AR-15 is like the M-16 rifle, with the bullet design to tumble in a mass (soft body tissue) after it hits it. An ear is too small of mass, so it would just go through the ear. A hunting rifle would of been a better choice, a 308 or 303 or 270. A heavier mass, not as much deterred by wind at the small range of shooting here.
Personally I would of used a 155mm shell with extended range (40 km) and HE.... and it explodes and everything in 20 feet gets hit... A drone flying 10,000 ft could laser the artillery shell in....

Pretty much if Trump got killed, I would think ahh Karma at work again....

The answear to wokism and stupidity is not to give up your rights and freedom to some would be tryant, who will only further abuse your rights and freedom to enable himself and his cronies to gain power over yourself other people. The elected congress and senate are way too much in debt to lobbyists who are paid by big money groups like corporations and banks. So the actual voter doesn't get a say in the running of their country. For all we know through shell companies; it could be drug cartel money supporting the politicians in Washington... I have to wonder if Trumps campaign gets money from Russia, after all its pretty oblivious that the first thing he will do is cancell support for NATO and Ukraine. He be the biggest traiter to the USA since Benedict Arnold....

Trump last presidency only hinted at what he is willing to do. Give tax breaks to the rich, lower taxes for corporations, cut off medicare, not help in times of emergency (Puerto Rico, Covid). His responses gives warning to how he acts towards people who he thinks are lower than him. They are not rich like him, they do not take advantage of the rules etc. They are dumber than he is.... His appointments of SCOTUS has turned the law upside down in the USA, causing irreparable damage to women's rights and freedom. The separation of church and state is failing, as mainly Religious groups are calling the narrative on abortions issues.
People want to be honest and treat other people fairly.
If you are making laws to limit certain people, than the law is bad and should be abolished, it has to be fair to everybody.

In J.D. Vance, Trump is going all in on populism — and elevating an heir apparent

just need to sweep the crumbs of the old Republican party off the porch at this point! hahaha!

who knew that it would be so easily pulled off by a couple of carpet-baggers! its such a spectacle at this point that i don't see how the scheme can possibly fail!

unless... Biden steps down and the Democrats employ the writers from Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad to come up with a script!

The guy seems like he's got some intellect, but also seems like a guy who quickly & easily sold out every position he ever had, and would do so again, given the right sort of inducements. Does he even have his own strong ideas, because he seems more like a "whichever way the wind blows" kind of guy.

I suppose people should be relived it was not someone batshit crazy like Marjorie Taylor Greene. Though that choice might have cost Trump election by itself, you have to ask what if he won anyway then died of a stroke then Bloody Margie would be in charge.,

And if the story is true of an officer backing away rather than confronting a gunman
If I’m climbing up a ladder and someone on the roof points a rifle at me I’m getting the fuck out of there.
Anyone who says they would do different is full of shit.

Cop should have been on the radio asap though. That’s where the breakdown happened.
Secret Service snipers didn’t see the shooter because of the pitch of the roof.
Shooter was up there with a gun for 2 minutes, not 30. He went up for site assessment, then came back with a gun. Not up the whole time.
Lots of details peeps are unaware of or disregarding.

Trump is going to fire the person in charge of the Secret Service when he gets back to the White House. I know he has to be PC for now and remain quiet but inside he must be calling them every name in the book.
The Biden Admin does not fire people, they just leave them on the books to F things up more.

Very true I must admit.
