There are lots of people in Vancouver that will pay Uber prices. I imagine they are trying to get everything in order for ski season so they can offer Escalades or Helicopters to their customers travelling to Whistler. It will also be great for North Shore people who are downtown. Right now they can only take North Shore cabs when they are going from downtown to the North Shore.

I have heard the horror stories though and I am NOT paying Uber prices. A little out of my league.

I had not heard they were expensive and perhaps you can give an example?

I just plugged in a start / finish in the Seattle area and even the SUV rate wasn't too bad.

------------------------------------------

One thing I like to do in situations like Vancouver City Council, Taxi Companies vs UBER is follow the money.

The immediate partnership with council and the Taxi companies makes me wonder about campaign contributions the Mayor Moonbeam's re-election fund? Anybody know how to get those numbers?

Yup....read the Newspaper. Vision got $12,000.00 last election. NPA got $6,000.00. For what it's worth, Crusty got $15,000.00 plus free cabs for her voters in her failed bid just to be a Mayoralty candidate.

I haven't been following it that closely and admittedly only took in the sound bites off the evening news.

Thanks for the info.

I have heard so many horror stories about UBER that I would be thinking twice before using them. From price gauging to over charging, untrained drivers to unclean cabs. The cabs in Vancouver are kind of hard to get during peak hours but I would still take a cab because I atleast know which local company I am dealing with, just in case there is any problem with my credit card or something.

I also see UBER as another US company syphoning the money out of Canada. Having said that local taxi company really could use some improvement in customer service.

In my experience, I think a lot of taxi drivers are scammers and it doesn't matter what country you're in. However, taxis in Vancouver suck compared to their counterparts around the world. Whether it's price, availability, or customer service. I've had my share of horror stories with our local cab companies, from double charging my credit card, taking the long way, trying to scam me (a local) with a non-existent "luggage fee", pretending to accept cash only (especially from the airport), not helping with my luggage (self serve), complaining of not enough tip, etc.

UBER is almost everywhere in the world, except Vancouver. The first time around, they were forced by the local government, lobbied by the taxi companies, to charge a minimum of $75 per trip because they were deemed a limosiune service. If and when ÜBER successfully returns to Vancouver, they plan to charge what they typically charge in other cities, 10 to 20 percent cheaper than what taxis charge for the same trip, not $75.

Especially with the lack of taxis, unreliable public transit (Skytrain), and few transportation alternatives, UBER will be a welcome addition, further providing an additional option for commuters. I would use UBER.

You sir, are the President of Wrongville.
I'm sorry, you must have me confused for someone who gives a shit. At least I'm a President. ;-P

I guess you've never had the good fortune of being scammed by a taxi driver before, here or anywhere else in the world. Maybe by an SP, but not a cabbie.

I have never had a problem getting a cab in downtown Vancouver. You hail a cab New York style- hand in the air and you walk towards an approaching cab (yell if you need to get a cabbies attention). Vancouverites are just way too polite. All the cell phone app does is put you in a line to get a cab, same as a phone call. Get out on the street and hail a cab.

I Ubered last week on East Coast USA. It was lower cost than the fixed price from the Taxi's, very clean, new SUV and the driver was the owner of the SUV. I think incl tip my cost was roughly about 60% of the Taxi rate.

There was no fixed pick up spot on the Arrivals level with Uber people holding up hand written signs saying "Taxi". They would then get in their vehicles and try to pick up people waiting in the long Taxi line up outside.

Overall a positive experience.

heck, i got ubered to YVR from downtown back in the 90's!

i had walked around the corner from my office to a cabstand, and a guy pulled up in a cab from one of the suburbs. before i climbed in i asked him how much it was to the airport, because i needed to know if he had to drop by an atm for me as i didn't have much cash (not many cabs took plastic in the 90's). he said $10. i said whaaat... he said just get in - no flag, if you're ok with that. i said sure, and he explained on the way that he borrowed the cab from a licenced buddy whenever he needs cash, and does cash transactions like he was giving me. i thought the $10 was a real steal, and nobody seemed to notice that he had a passenger but no flag :thumb:
