i'm not justifying or something. i just think what they are doing now is illegal and need some opinions on it.
so to sum it up, i think pantherdash is right because the law says the ticket has to be stat-barred by now. ie i did not commit a crime!
Well, you never did commit a crime in the first place. It's not a criminal offence to fail to pay your transit ticket.
But I also never did say you didn't do wrong in the first place.
What I mean is that if a collection agency is after you for the fine, Translink sold the debt to the collection agency a long time ago and that agency sold it to another agency for far less than the first one and so on. They don't give a shit what it's for, they just want to recover money, usually far less than the original debt.
At this stage in the game, Translink like many large government organizations and major banks have shredded their documents to make room for newer ones, which means they have no evidence to support their claim. The debt is more than 6 years old so it's statute-barred which means that they cannot legally collect on it. The only debts that survive stats-barred are court-appointed fines for criminal behaviour and taxes. But I'm not a lawyer...you should talk to a lawyer if you're really worried.
If it were me, I wouldn't do anything and if they harrassed me enough, I'd take them to court for harrassment.
