What are your opinions of our new coach?
I like the guy now , i like how he is using Garrison for his bomb shot , like how he uses Sue Deans on the PK , (that will pay off with some short handed goals)
he seems to be getting the most out of this sometimes lazy team. Even though we lost to Pittsburg I think it was a good game and good effort. Refs sunk us again. I think Kesler is going to get going and will be tested by him constantly. Way to go Torts!!!!! :clap2:

I like that he doesn't give a shit what CBC thinks.

Oh, and the twins on the PK.

Actually, I loved Torts since his Tampa Days. Very happy to have him in Vancouver. Its nice to puck support and crease clearing.

New York on the other hand... Vigneault's gone and called out King Henrik already. Good times, good times.

The Canucks need a stronger and grittier players on the team from what we are currently producing on the ice. Torts is just the beginning towards tasting a sip from the Stanley Cup as we're 3-4 years away from that being a possibility.

As a wildly obsessed Rangers fan I can tell AV that Lundqvist is the least of the problems. This is by far the worst Rangers team (especially offensively) since the Dark Years (1997-2005 when they missed the playoffs every year). Without Callahan, Nash and Hagelin (all injured) this team is seriously worse than some AHL teams up front. Hell, Taylor Pyatt was on the first line against the Devils last night.
Torts would find a defensive scheme to at least keep NYR respectable, with last year being a perfect example. They had a lunchpail identity under Torts, but now they just look like a mish-mash collection of fragmented, untalented pieces with a world-class goalie who has clearly gotten fed up with the shite that has gone on in front of him. As much as the King loves NY City and playing for the Rangers, he will no doubt have to get outta Dodge if he is gonna get a legitimate shot to win the Cup he wants so badly.
Torts was very upset when he lost his job, and rightfully so after some of his spoiled-baby players threw him under the bus at the season-ending meetings with Sather. But I bet he is glad to have escaped that dysfunctional NYR family right now. Good for him. I am ambivalent to the Canucks, but with Torts there I kinda hope they do well just to pound another nail in the coffin of that senile snake Sather.

Oh definitely. Henrik is one of the best (arguably the best) goalies in the world. He's adjusting to smaller pads and for some ungodly reason his goalie coach is expecting him to play further out this season (maybe to compensate for smaller pads? All I know is, don't fuck with perfection). Philadelphia will likely throw a dump truck of money at Lundqvist as soon as UFA hits.

Vigneault's system is - for lack of a better term - an abortion. Watching the Rangers last night was just... ugh, awful. It was so weird to watch another team play so friggin' passively as Vancouver had the last two seasons. Torts got the best out of a poorly built roster (why, why did they trade for Nash, so dumb) and now it's really showing because the team just isn't built with enough talent to make Viggie's system function. Sather is just a terrible GM.

Watching Sather build a team is like watching a blind man with no fingers trying to put together an elaborate puzzle. Giving Sather cap space is like giving teenagers whiskey and car keys.

I was chatting with Rangers' fans on HFBoards prior to training camp and they scoffed and didn't believe me when I said that Taylor Pyatt is going to be playing way too much. It's like they thought I hadn't seen this schtick before.

Let me see here Peyton - you are clearly intelligent, have a way with words, you are beautiful and you can go toe to toe with me talking about the Rangers. I love you?? LOL. :)Very true about the Nash trade. He has really not fit in at all, get hurts a lot, while Dubinsky and Anisimov have been nice pieces in Columbus, who I guarantee will finish ahead of the Rangers in the Metropolitan Division this season. Pyatt, meanwhile is one of the worst skaters in the NHL. He even made Richards look fast at times last night.

The Metropolitan is just a giant clusterfuck. I thought it was going to to be the powerhouse division, but that's looking like the Central early on. I'm not sold on Officer Bobrovsky for a whole season yet (though I do like Bobocop, I am a shameful Flyers fan as well) and Jack Johnson is legitimately the worst Top 4 D-Man in the league (by Fenwick/Corsi AAAAND the eye test).

Now I just miss Jay and Dan more. YOU BETTER FUCKING LOVE THEM, FOX NEWS WATCHERS.

I'm pretty sure due to the fact I was born in SW Ontario means that I came out of the womb with an encyclopedic hockey knowledge. It's very well known science.

Yes, the Jackets botched the whole Jeff Carter deal from the get-go. Carter won a Cup in LA and JJ was certainly an expendable part on a deep Kings D. I really like Cam Atkinson though and forward Ryan Johansen (who played here for the Vees) is going to be a player. After Pittsburgh, anyone can grab one of the other two playoff spots in the Met Division, even your Flyers! They have some nice young forwards there with Read, Vorocek, Couturier, and Giroux is still a kid himself. The D looks a bit messy and the goaltending isn't any better than when Bryzzy manned the crease, but a .500 record might just get you a playoff spot in this scrub division ... and as you well know, the Flyers made it to the final after eking out a playoff spot on the last day of the season 4 years ago. (That shootout in the last game makes my list of 10 worst moments in my history as a Rangers fan, though I have plenty of material over the years to choose from lol). With a gun to my head, I'll take Carolina and the Islanders to get the other 2 playoff spots, with Boston, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa making it from the other division.

Said it all along - Canuck fans are going to love Torts. I also said Ranger fans like myself are gonna despise Vigneault. So happy for Torts because as he showed in his post-game presser last night how classy and compassionate he is off the ice, as well as being a coach who gets the most out of his players.
Yes, it helps to have some talent. AV looks down the bench and really sees no legitimate scoring threat, especially with Nash and Cally injured. But it's not all that new for the Rangers in recent seasons ... challenged offensively, yet Torts got them to do enough to stay competitive and win games. AV had talent in Van, he just didn't push the right buttons when it mattered most. Now he's stuck with a depleted lineup (with Lundqvist injured now too, day to day) that wasn't all that potent to begin with. In New York no less, where there is going to be no place to hide. Welcome to your nightmare AV, and good luck hoping Slats will throw you a lifeline. And good luck motivating some of the gutless players who threw Torts under the bus and got him fired in NY. This season could be an embarrassment of Elizabethan proportions and you are going to be exposed for the inferior coach you are. Short term pain for the long term gain of getting your sorry arse booted out of NYR.
Never thought I'd say it, but I will be pulling for the Canucks, because then Torts can tell Sather "I told you so". But he won't, he is too classy a guy to do that. Go get the Cup Torts, and maybe that will in some way help force Senile Slats out the door in NY like he should have a long, long time ago.

4-1-1 so far on a 7 game roadtrip? I completely expect a bad loss tonight to the Blues, but good lord. Canucks have 9 healthy NHL-calibur forwards and are back to dressing Andrew Alberts regularly again, but we're somehow winning games. All hail Torts.

Also of note: Henrik Sedin is 1st (by a good margin) in the NHL in ES (even strength) scoring and Daniel is 4th. Basically means that if the PP starts looking somewhat respectable again they'll be contending for the scoring title again this season. Just food for thought for those who thought Tortorella's system was going to kill offence.

Kevin Bieksa also leads the league in +/- (stupid stat but worth noting) with a +11 and Jason Garrison is tied for second in scoring amongst defensemen (after PK Subban) with 9pts in 13 GP.

Great man. Thank you NYR.

I agree all is looking good so far.

Be mindful of the Top Line's minutes played and every game it's been 25 + minutes a game. Pretty tough to log these sort of minutes night in night out for a season. 2nd, 3rd and 4th line need to step it up to take some relief off the Twins and Kesler (they logged > 27 minutes last night).

I'm fairly confident this will resolve itself once the injured depth comes back.

I like what your saying , but please dont hold your breath for a cup , with this existing team......not a chance. however we may get lucky and get in playoffs.
is going to be interesting to see what Gillis does to actually give Torts a full bench of a team. does he put Booth on waivers? trade who? get a effective third line happening and a grinder forthline? I think Torts is not gonna take shit from Gillis and will make demands. Even if he has to go around Gillis and go to Aqualini..... But something is gonna have to happen real soon. he cant keep playing key guys the min. he has been and keep them safe and healthy. I look forward to the upcoming management drama , that WILL be happening soon. Gillis has to shit or get off the pot !!!

I'm not a fan of him, But it's more a contrast of coaching philosophy than anything.

You can't play your star players that much and expect them to be fresh or healthy in the playoffs. Not only is he playing them so much, but they are filling in roles that should be for the 3rd line players. This is pretty problematic when by the time the playoffs arrive, the core players will have played around a LONG 90 games.

He's trying to relived his glory days of '04. The thing is, the only reason why '04 worked was because the NHL didn't have the video technology to count that one goal in game 6 (which they developed like a month after the cup).

Just wait until the other teams figure out the powerplay. Get ready to pull out your hair as they do the exact same thing over and over again with the exact same unsatisfying results.
I don't know if you've watched a Canucks game in the last two years but the PP has been shit since January 2012.

Yes. Lousy PP seems to coincides with the Malhotra's eye incident. Less FO wins = less time with puck possession. That will stretch your other FO aces too. Wow. A nice set of guns AND hockey smarts. You are a 10! :clap2:

(edit: yes people, I know Manny lost the eye before that time, but the slide was happening. I became uber noticeable by Jan of 2012).

Actually the Canucks are #1 in posession this year, despite average FO numbers.

What causing the problem with the PP is poor shooting percentage. IIRC Daniel Sedin is a career 12% shooter but is shooting at around 5% right now. I'm not totally concerned about it as a better indicator of decline is the number of shots taken over a game and Daniel is still averaging about 3 SOG per game. Once his percentage normalizes that's a 25-32G scorer (low end to high end). Even Naslund in his last year in New York was an 11% shooter, just he wasn't getting shots on net. On the other hand, Richardson is shooting at 36% right now and that's just obscene and unsustainable (though I love him as a pick up). Even the best snipers (Ovi, Stamkos) usually hang out around 16-18%.

TL;DR- Canucks have piss poor puck luck according to advanced stats so it will start to normalize. They've also in the bottom 5 for fewest PPs in the league, so that will also skew numbers.

I like math.
