Apparently customers find paper bags "cumbersome" and despite being fully grown responsible adults, are SOMEHOW INCAPABLE OF CARRYING THEIR OWN FREAKIN' CANVAS BAGS to the store.

All I know is that Thrifty's is a great Victoria and Vancouver Island store, and I am glad too see they're moving into the Vancouver area.

Thrifty's made the change thinking plastic bags were going to be obsolete in a year or two. They were wrong and received fuckloads of complaints. The transition will be three stores on the mainland as an experiment.

What people should be aware of is the cutting of hours and deliberate attempt of Sobeys to chase away longtime employees in an attempt to get them to quit and be replaced by cheaper labour.

I don't want to be rude...but you're misinformed. They're deliberately cutting hours and making things more difficult for employees in an attempt to get senior employees (higher paid staff) to quit. The original owner sold the place 5-6 years ago and Sobeys is capitalizing on his legacy. Expect staff to not give a fuck or be completely retarded in a couple of years. Probably both.

I find Thrifty's to be a lot more expensive than the other stores in town.
Price won't change and staff will give less of a fuck in a year...guaranteed!

The plastic bag scam is just another example of the "Green" lunacy that is forced upon us. In the past couple of years many large corporate retailers have started charging us for plastic bags. Of course this has nothing to do with their desire to increase corporate profit margins, but rather a sudden concern for the environment.

Does anyone here really think that these corporations really give a shit about you or the environment? The corporations have simply made an observation that customers have been sufficiently brainwashed to the "Green" thinking that they wont push back when forced to pay for or bring their own bags.

When I go to the supermarket these days I shake my head at the brainwashed sheep going into the store with their armful of bags. What is particularly sad is the fact that many of these people have good intentions and actually believe that they are saving the earth.

There is a reason that the supermarkets have been using plastic bags for years. They are cheap, convenient, and sanitary. Reusable bags frequently have unacceptably high levels of bacterial, yeast, mold and coliform counts.Yes I know that I could wash these bags between supermarket visits but who wants to do that?

Whenever I go the supermarket almost every women I see is wearing makeup. If you really want to reduce the consumption of petroleum and save the earth, quick wearing makeup. Of course that will never happen. By the way I don't mean to pick on women but in my experience they seem to be the most militant when it comes to criticizing those who don't drink the "Green" Kool-aid.

Unfortunately there are not enough of us who actually think for themselves, so the brainwashed masses will probably continue to perpetuate the "Green" myth. Somebody has to pay for Al Gore's private jet. :p

Personally, I don't throw away plastic bags. I use them for the kitchen garbage, putting the extra stinky diapers in them, and putting the cat litter in there...

No plastic bag goes to waste with me. :)
