Here are the places I always take my out-of-town guests:
1. Grouse Mountain - If you like a challenge, hike up the 2.9 km (1 km elevation gain) "Nature's Stairmaster," aka the Grouse Grind. If not, pay $35 to take the SkyRide gondola. Check out the various attractions up top, then hit the patio at Altitudes Bistro for casual, reasonably-priced and decent food with a great view. Secret tip: look around for people wearing season's passes around their necks and strike up conversation with them. They can get you up the SkyRide for 1/2 price.
2. Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge - not to be confused with the over-hyped, over-priced tourist trap that is the Capilano Suspension Bridge. If it's a hot day, the swimming hole is absolutely not to be missed.
3. Drive the Sea-to-Sky highway up to Squamish (45-60 min drive) and have lunch or drinks at the Howe Sound Inn in downtown Squamish.
4. Granville Island - neat little place with a huge food market and a ton of artisan shops. From downtown, walk to the Aquabus terminal and take the little boats across.
5. English Bay / Sea wall / Stanley Park / Aquarium - check out the beach then walk or bike the sea wall from English Bay around the park (9 km). Bike rentals are available along Denman Street. The Aquarium is an absolute must-see.
6. UBC / Wreck Beach - as noted by previous posters, clothing optional. Sunsets at Wreck Beach are stunning.
7. Casa Gelato (at Clark & Venables) - sample many of their 238(?) flavours as possible before plunking down $5-8 for your selection of 1-3 scoops.
Have fun! This is a great city with lots to do and see.
