Check your closet..:)
How dangerous is a wandering cow in comparison to discharging 24 rounds in an urbanized area?

This was a Sunday morning and a wandering cow, not downtown Manhattan and a crazed lion. A cow. Even panicked, cows don't think fast and probably could have been guided to an area where it could have been contained until somebody who knew what they were doing could have arrived.

They took 30 minutes to get to a point where they shot it. What were they expecting it to do that it hadn't done already? Pull out an Uzi?

Too bad the Abby police don't get ths trigger happy with all the gangsters in their town.
Only if the gangsters dress like cows ...

as someone whom has travelled by road over this continent-including mexico-it surprises me the road going public is unaware of open range land laws. If i recall (and at this age it's not easy to recall a lot of things) most of my travels through first nations lands involve cattle guards and road signs reminding motorists of open range. then there's the expanses of the great basin desert, such as Utah, Nevada, Idaho and such. So much open range.

I've been surprised by deer, elk, moose, coyote, rabbits and all sorts of wildlife. not yet seen domestic bovine jump out in front of me or leap in any direction with any speed. mostly, they graze and watch the closing speed with indifference. calm like. oh sure, the occasional male will eye ball me as i troll by a herd.
Most people are scared of cows. I guess because their size.? As someone who's taken Dylan Biggs cattle handling clinic i find they aren't that hard to steer and take where you want. I've seen Dylan load bulls on a trailer in the open range with no coral or fence. If nothing else a couple boys on horseback and ropes could have made for a better ending. Did anyone see the shootout in Ontario last year? Similar story.
I watch 5 gear tv show and they will be driving the balls off a car, on a skinny road, dodging sheep. They don't even think twice or even mention the stock.

I deal with Mountain Lions, Bear, and Wolves almost weekly, but the most dangerous place around here ,is inside my Bull Pens.
All they have to do is decide to use you as a scratching post.

Most Dairy cows can be handled by a guy on foot, by just lifting his arms, and directing it too the place you want it too go.
I'm not sure how many Ropers there are in Abbotsford but the outcome of this incident is rather ridiculous.

Nope I'd be charging ICBC for the loss of my livestock, you arrogant pencil neck.
The law is as follows.....You do not have the right of way...Horses and cattle do.
If you'd take the time to read the entire post....Assuming you have a good enough attention span...You'd see that I live on open range.
If you drive outside of Vancouver, and up in the Interior ..YOU have to watch for livestock, it can legally be on the road, with the exception of Highways.
If you kill or maim that animal by hitting it with your car, you owe the Rancher the cost of that animal...It's clearly stated in Legislation.
This is assuming that the driver of the car is more intelligent than the cow thats standing on the road...You see, your the one with the superior intellect..Or at least that's the theory.
Learned something new today. Cool.

Brilliantly put, cowboy. (I changed the language for emphasis as well as to correct the grammar...it's the easy way for people to avoid that error, too! i only corrected the grammar because you know I just can't help it...sometimes I'm weak!) What do people think FREE RANGE BEEF means? There are signs all over the area that say CATTLE XING. Do they think the cows line up at the side of the road and wait for the cars to pass by?

*I had to edit my own typos out of this before I could walk away from my computer! This is why I'm "the Communications Cougar": I'm addicted to proofreading.

You can correct my grammer anytime you damn well want....I have plenty too say, I just can't always say it right.
Although I figure I used "Pencil neck ,and attention span" in the correct context, I was a little pissed at the time.
Now why the hell have you been so quiet?

I was whisked away to Vancouver Island on Monday to an incredibly tranquil spot...I only had access to my phone, and I don't like to use my phone for PERB. The screen is too small to make it a pleasurable experience...I hate when that happens! :eyebrows: I was in an amazing place in magnificent company, and I can't wait to go back. (I'm seriously considering being there bIt's one of my favourite relaxation destinations...I was celebrating my birthday, and celebrate I did. I want to thank EVERYONE who made this past year wonderful, and to acknowledge the many happy birthday PMs & texts that I got, as well as the amazing night & day that Mr. FatBoyLo treated me to! To the ladies who sent regrets that they couldn't join us; you missed a hell of a night, and a fun excursion to Victoria's Secret as well!!! To the bombshell who asked for the rain check...consider it a date! I'll PM you with the details.

Oh and FatBoyLo...If you're reading this from far away, be safe! Have fun, but not OUR kind of fun!!! ;D See you really soon!

Anyone else remember the Gary Larson cartoons? Cows in a field, standing around, talking and smoking cigarettes? The next frame has someone shouting "car," so they all get on all fours and make like cows.

Ah, I miss his daily calendar's.

Perhaps we shouldn't be too hard on the fellows who don't know how to handle cattle…maybe even forgive them their mistake. After all, "To err is human. To forgive, bovine."

Hey remember the Great Chicago Fire.

From the history channel:

In 1871, flames spark in the Chicago barn of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary, igniting a two-day blaze that kills between 200 and 300 people, destroys 17,450 buildings, leaves 100,000 homeless and causes an estimated $200 million (in 1871 dollars; $3 billion in 2007 dollars) in damages. Legend has it that a cow kicked over a lantern in the O’Leary barn and started the fire.

Well this is Abbotsford fire prevention at it's finest. Swat member was shooting at flies assholes but accidently hit the cow several times.
The cow is always mentioned in the Chicago fire story, but if it's true I would blame the fire on the fool who left a lantern within reach of a cow, in a flammable environment.

What happened in Abbotsford just amazes me. It's in the Fraser Valley, surrounded by farmland! How could the police not have access to someone, anyone, who would have clue how to deal with a cow?

You sure are high and mighty for a guy who can't keep his livestock off the road I'm sure if someone had been killed in the vehicle that hit your cow you'd be on here complaining about them as well.
Sybian's reply to this post was spot on, but I can't resist pointing out that, when driving through rangeland, or anywhere outside our familiar territory, we really really have to respect the folks who live there. When driving on a backroad in Mexico, one stops for chickens on the road, because those chickens belong to someone who lives there. When driving through rangeland here in BC, one takes care not to harm the cattle, or to put it another way, the livelihood, of those who live there. That would seem to be common courtesy, but humans being what we are, the government has had to legislate the rights of rangeland users.

I'm pretty sure that when Sybian works up the nerve to brave the traffic of Vancouver, he makes an effort to avoid running into poodles and parked cars. Different place, same principle.

Myself I love meandering around on backroads in B.C. When cattle slow me down, I'm more amused than anything else. I once drove at cattle pace for half an hour behind a herd being moved along a narrow back road. The folks herding the cattle had nowhere to move them off the road. As soon as they had a chance, they pushed the cattle out of my way. Courtesy both ways. It's wonderful thing.

The next time you drive by when we are pushing cows, be sure and say Hello.
I always enjoy a good visit ,on the side of the gravel road, blocking traffic or not...And bring a week old newspaper with you.
Week old or not...It would be the first one I've seen for a month.

Look left. Way left.
I'll try to remember that, sybian. I get out 2-4 times a year and usually carry newspaper for starting my campfires. I'll keep an eye out for you.
Was supposed to be out there in a few weeks but other issues came up. Fun in the snow for my buddies!
