They stayed on the reserves mostly because of everything in my previous post. You get beat down so much & told your nothing till you actually start believing what there telling you.
I was fortunate that i didn't grow up on the reserve, not to say that it was much easier omongst the whites. Growing up in the 60's- 70's, i grew up with a lot of racism,getting called chug & wagon burner everyday isn't much fun.

The cash-rich reserve casino Foxwoods, which is the most profitable gaming complex in the United States, has American politicians lining up for donations from the Chief. From Congressmen, Senators, up to the US President. Bill Clinton and Bush were frequent visitors. Not surprising, when that big multi-billion American bailout was approved years back, the other profitable reserve casino in Connecticut which is the Mohegan Sun, had a multi-million allocation from it. Well, it does create jobs.
While I see where lenny is coming from on this one, there is a tried and true human way to settle these types of issues. It's called war. It has a long history of settling the issue of who owns what and who's entitled to this or that piece of land. Generally unrestrained war with a goodly dose of genocide can settle the issue (it sure helped the Americans with their claims to the good ol' U.S. of A).
The question is, do the Native Americans have the gonadal fortitude to do what is necessary to get their land back? Personally I doubt it. Not because they aren't courageous or daring enough (or insane enough if you will), but merely because of the numbers game. I'm not sure what portion of the 330,000,000 people in North America are Native Americans, but I don't think it's a substantial portion and certainly not more than 20,000,000 (though I'm happy to be proven wrong on this point).
With those numbers, the odds of successfully winning a war are extremely slim. Add to this the fact that there are hundreds of different Native American groups (tribes, nations or what have you) who are not united and in strong agreement to wage war on the usurping Europeans and their ilk, the odds of success go way way down.
If the Native Americans are unwilling to go this far (essentially waging war and slaughtering 200 million or more people) they can kiss their land goodbye. I think it would be more productive to pursue other ends and endeavours, but hey, it's a free country.
There is no justice in this world as between nation states (or even nations for that matter). Historically it has been the rule of the jungle and the strong rule over the weak. We seem to be trying to change this a bit in modern times, but as any reading of your daily newspaper will tell you, the change hasn't gone very far at all.
Godspeed with your war to obtain back your lands lenny. While your cause is just, it is futile. Nonetheless it would make for a fine historical event and I'd be honoured to live in such interesting times. Who knows, the Native Americans might even win. However, the Chinese, Russians, Japanese and the Europeans still in Europe would be just itching to come on over and take over. Of course, it would probably be a very long war (nukes would probably kill off all the Native Americans too, so they aren't really on the table), but still. In 500 years of endless war (assuming that the Natives aren't themselves exterminated after posing such a threat to the usurpers) victory may be achieved (heck it might even take less than 500 years, who knows... Maybe a targeted genetic weapon would do the trick?), but I doubt it.

The biggest mistake of the guys in Nevada and the Nevada Gaming Commission before is that they allowed gaming to get out of their state in the form of reserve casinos. Like those ones in California from Pechanga, Morongo, and Barona to name a few. All making big profits at their expense. Once you allow the GENIE to get out of the bottle it will never come back.
What land goes back to what natives? There are many tribes that claimed their own piece of land and for centuries, killed each other over it. It didn't belong to every tribe! So now, the white man has taken it and it belongs to them because they haven't been challenged. Fuck the reserves, all the land in Europe and Asia has changed hands over and over and over. And yet, nobody gets to have payments and coddling from the current generation just because their Great, great, great, great, great Grandfather used to own the land that he killed some other poor sap and took it from...
