Saw some snippets of highlights and gotta agree. Loved the behind the backboard left handed jam and the right -left rebound jam, but I think the superman dunk sealed the deal in terms of showmanship. Best performance since Vince took the title a few years back

It's about the only thing good about the NBA...

I stopped giving a shit about the NBA 8 years ago...it's a tired league with few up-coming stars...THe NHL is in much better shape and more interesting to say the least.

I saw it too. It was pretty cool. Except I wasn't sure that the Dwight Howard Superman thing was technically a dunk. He did kinda just throw it in the hoop. But he did take off "two-footed" from just inside the freethrow line. Pretty impressive any way you slice it. I just wasn't sure that it should be considered a dunk.

I heard the NHL is considering adding a Dunk-Off type event to the All Star Game festivities with the popularity and showmanship that has come with the overtime shootout. Could be pretty cool to see the NHL's savviest stickhandlers show their best moves when the outcome of a game isn't on the line.

Actually the NHL did do a shoot-out as part of their All-Star skills competition and with the exception of a couple of decent moves by Ovechkin, it was very lame.

Commentary I heard on that blamed it on the players not really understanding that it was about showmanship, not actually scoring. The player that batted the puck out of the air was cited as a great example.

Hey, if they can get creative with cupcakes and candles for the slam dunk contest, I say bring it for the shootout!

Cheers, and have fun,
Ghostwheel

The NHL attempt was a total flop and most likely won't be back next year since the creativity just wasn't there. Kovalchuk sliding to his knees? Need I say more

I'm speechless. I agree that the Grizzlies and the NBA abandoned our city but it's still great to watch. Young Stars, LeBron James, Chris Bosch, Carmello Anthony, Kevin Durant, Amare Stodumire, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer, Rodney Stuckey and Branden Roy to name a handful..

The NHL, Sydney Crosby and a bunch of guys named Sergei.

NHL vs NBA stars

The NHL and the NBA have an impressive amount of young stars. FYI Fillup, besides Crosby there's Alexander Ovechkin, Mike Richards, Eric Staal, Dion Phaneuf, Henrick Zetterberg and Jason Spezza to name a few.

However, why the NBA All-star weekend and why the NBA altogether works better, particularly in the US markets is that there star players have personality. They're charismatic, brash, cocky and boastful. The NHL produces "cookie cutter" superstars. They say all the right things to all the right people and don't rock the boat.

Here's an example. A couple of years ago Cabral Richards (aka Cabbie on the Street) did an interview with Peter Forsberg. Cabbie asked him if he thought he had skills, and Forsberg's response was "I'm pretty good." Ask Carmello Anthony that question, he probably would have said he was one of the best in the world and he would be right. It's not cocky if you can back it up.

The NHL needs a star with star power, star skill and star charisma. Crosby is a nice kid and a phenomenal talent but is a rather lackluster poster boy for the NHL. Ovechkin, due to his performance this year and in the previous 2 seasons should dethrone him as he is far more charismatic and just as skilled, if not more so. If the NHL had a couple of brash young stars like the NBA, they'd be a more entertaining league to watch as a whole. As far as watching the game play itself, hockey is infinitely better than basketball.

Much better shape? I hope that was a joke. The NHL has a hard time getting its attendance up in many American cities. Even hockey town is not selling out. I think what you mean is that the NHL is in better shape in Canada. There are plenty of young stars in the NBA.. Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Carmello Anthony, Andre Igoudala, Kevin Durant... to name a few. I have to say though the NHL is a little more fast paced and interesting, the last minutes of a basketball game has so much stoppage it drives me nuts.

Are u kiddin me? you must be livin under a rock. There are many up and coming stars in the NBA and the NBA knows how to market them (unlike the NHL). I know this is Canada and hockey is the national sport, but whats up with all the hate dude? PS that superman dunk was sick!!

none of which could hold a candle to michael jordan or most of the stars of the 80's 90's and very early 2000's. not to mention all the prima donna attitudes and all the pussy "no hand check" rule changes.

i used to live and die basketball and now although i'll still watch u.s. college ball with great enjoyment, i much prefer hockey over the nba. me saying that 10 years ago would have been un heard of.
