It has been suggested that 63% of Canadians fail to effectively differentiate fake news stories from true news stories on the internet.

Unilever, one of the world's largest advertisers, threatens to pull ads from social media citing among its reasons, fake news, messages of sexism and racism, as well as that the trust in social media is at a new low.

In consideration of the above statements, what are some of the practices or sites you use to try and sift the internet for truth?

Not really looking to start an argument, I am more interested in expanding my resources. Right now my main resources are the CBC, Vancouver Sun, The Guardian and The Economist.

BBC, CBC, Reuters, Vice News, and The Guardian apps on my phone.

I put on CNN to see how low #45 has sunk on any particular day.

Reuters, Economist, CNN, Pub Med(you need to double check almost any general news article that discusses science).

There are many fake accounts on twitter and facebook posting nonsense.

Stats Can to check claims about crime, drugs, whatever...
Some twitter feeds of organisations or people.
Always good to see original sources.

Yesterday there was a fake Facebook post that said Sylvestor Stsllone has died of cancer. There were many RIP comments. It sounded fishy to me. So I went on Twitter didn't see Stallone trending. Then I searched him up and discivered that the "news" was a hoax. Some sick minded people playing sick hoax.

If it is a topic I am interested in, I try to track down a local source (s). For the most part I find foreign correspondents to be far less biased than anything North American (U.S.A.) based.

Agreed. CBC, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The Guardian and South China Morning Post all reside on my phone. Any headline that follows the click bait routine “you’ll never believe...” doesn’t even get a second glance.

I recently cleaned up my twitter feed to where it’s just a few close friends or experts and news.

It's hard to get away from the left wing socialist worldview from any of the major sources, CBC, CNN, BBC, ABC are all just echo chambers for like minded people interviewing each other and promoting a globalist no borders worldview, but their success is obvious from some of the above comments

Interesting, I wouldn't have considered CNN as anywhere near being left wing, but I only watch their international stations when travelling. What are your sources for truth?

I also like Deutsche Welle television, it's on my Sony disc player. It's in English.

There is Russian tv on it too but not in English.

I see The Economist on many lists here. I like it, and subscribe to it. However, I find that for stories I know something about, their coverage is shallow. For example their occasional news from Canada really doesn't convey any of the complexity of our politics or social issues. Similarly, I find their news about industries I'm familiar with to be rather superficial. However, I guess that's the downside of trying to cover the entire world in a weekly news magazine.

I pretty much consider most "media" biased left wing yellow journalism with the CBC at the top of the list.Any European news agency that gets money from the state(Germany is a perfect example) are so Liberal biased it is off the scale when they report when 50,000 Germans who are upset/pissed off about how the Merkel Government has allowed millions of Muslim migrants into Germany and they march in protest about the state of the country they are branded as "extreme right wing" by the state sponsored media.Never mind or pay attention to the raping of white German gals by Muslim immigrants or the murders by those same Muslim immigrants....if you do so you are a RACIST.

The last Federal election in Canada is a perfect example of the work by the Leftist media. It literally got down to a bidding war between the Lieberals under Trudeau and the NDP under commie Tom Mulcair and the incumbent Prime Minister Harper over WHO would take the most Syrian "refugees" because of a picture of a dead kid on a beach in Greece. The Leftist media of course glossed over the fact that the kid was dead because his father chose to use a smuggler to illegally try to get into Greece.

Straight up that dead kid on a beach in Greece had nothing to do with the Hustings going on in Canada but the Leftist media made it an issue....and then Trudeau gets elected and Canadian tax payers get to pay 480 MILLION to bring those 50,000 "refugees" to our country and then let them suck money out of the system.....yet the same "inclusive and engaging" Government lead by Trudeau the self described "feminest" who has the oh so darling socks that the CBC loves to report on willingly and purposely FUCKS over the veterans that have fought for Canada.

Pretty sad fucking state of affairs when Canada literally throws tax payer money at Economic Migrants and then fucks over the people in the armed forces who fight/die and or are dismembered for the service of Canada.

I am on a small private UK board.
During the terrorist attack last year in London there were members posting live from their phones.
One posted pictures of a dead attacker seconds after he was killed, with police still over him, guns aimed at him.
Also wild pictures of an SAS team rappelling out a helicopter onto the Thames walkway, and another team being dropped on a bridge. Fuck.
Neat to see that first hand, with commentary. More real than any news.

Lots of good first hand stuff on twitter and imgur. You have to know who is credible or not credible. Like here, you form a circle of followers.

Al Jazzera English also can provide an interesting alternative perspective.
Originally set up with a lot of former BBC employees, and so had/has a fair amount of credibility, though its funding by the Qatar government does raise questions (and reason for some caution).

Most mainstream media are more centerist (CNN) to right-wing than left... despite the claims and protestations from those on the right.
Look at the ownership of the major media organisations and what their agenda is.
If you want to taste some left-wing media, take a look at Democracy Now, or possibly Huffington Post.
