Just curious how much people use/ are dependent on the Internet. Maybe I am just getting old but I use it for very little these days. A couple of chat forums, a dating site, and browsing through Kijiji and that is about it. Funny, but somehow I thought it would play a far larger role in my life.

It might be because of your age.

Fewer people in the 65+ age group use it simply because they are not getting work related emails. They are not interacting with their kid’s school and they are less active in online shopping.
But trust me, internet plays a huge role in people’s lives. Especially with smart phones internet is indispensable. Now cell phones are just not cell phones. They are basically your hand held computers.

My life is dependent on the internet. Every morning I wake up and check Twitter. Then I watch some Netflix as I rarely watch cable anymore. When I have to head out I consult Google maps for the best way to do so. Then, when I am on the bus, I read the news. I do all of my banking online as well. Thank god Shaw has unlimited internet!!

edit: I also use YouTube at night to listen to music.

The internet has made my job as a truck driver easier, no more box of maps cluttering up the truck just a GPS on the dash. Crossing the border is a breeze now everything done electronically in advance, no more spending hours on the phone chasing customs brokers down. The internet tells me where the fuel is cheapest, if I need a tire it tells me where the nearest place is.

The downside is the pesky grandkids can find me easier lol

1989 for me. Got ya beat. :)

Started using it in undergrad. Got into USENET (vaguely like modern reddit). As to porn, spending 20 min to download a 150K JPEG on my 2400 baud modem seems a tad desperate in retrospect.

Started using the Internet in my tech career in 1994 and haven't stopped. My career pretty well relies on it. And personally, the advent of online banking and online shopping in the 21st century are a hell of a time saver, and I almost never watch regular TV anymore (stream instead), super easy to find digital versions of my worn out cassettes and vinyl too. A lot easier to carry that stuff in my phone than the stacks of CDs, albums and cassettes gathering dust in the corner.

That wouldn't be the Internet though, but yeah I remember being on BBSes around 82-83... constantly redialling for 45 minutes trying to get a free port.

1991 - but the internet isn't really a thing anymore. It has gone into the background and you do things enabled by the internet. I shop, bank read, look at maps, listen to music, watch TV, exchange messages and mail and probably a 1000 other things I don't even think about that are enabled by the internet. Back in the 90's, and to some extent into the 2000's you "logged on" to the internet, surfed stuff. Now My phone, tablets, computers are just always connected and while I do log into certain services, I never thing about "the internet". It has got to the point where it is like asking how often you use electricity. You could think about it that way but other than paying your hydro bill you probably don't. You think you keep your food cold, wash your clothes, watch TV, use your computing devices and so on.

I remember years ago, someone was afraid to watch t.v she thought the cia was into mind control

but this is huge there mining data, targeting ads, and trying to swing elections.
that is what the fuck there doing, trying to control election outcomes.
targeting ads bots, etc etc,

the internet social media, is it possible it might turn out to be the worst thing every created.
I dunno, but one media mogul called social media a cancer in our society,

you can link the rise of social media to suicide,
its like everything guns don't kill people people do,
drugs for the most part are harmless, until you get addicted or get behind a wheel.

we don't even know what extent were dealing with these things. or the future, what it will bring.

I don't really do much on the internet, but I really can't live without it lol...I actually can't live without my desktop computer...I had a fear the other day that they will stop making desktop computers! I wonder if they stopped now? haven't checked the stores lately...my last hard drive I bought in 2013, and my monitor is from 2008, but it was a beautiful monitor and it still is, it's better than some of my ipads and laptops and smart TVs! If the internet was cut off, at least I have my computer, but I couldn't live without for long, I need google, for reference and research, and to pull up any photo in a second. I don't care much for social media, but I like watching random youtube videos from all kinds of topics sometimes. The only thing I use facebook for is the groups. I absolutely hate using laptops, ipads and smart phones to use the internet. Hate it hate it hate it! hate touchscreen too, maybe because I'm an old school graphic designer (15+ years), I like my mouse and keyboard. I have been using the computer since the 90's when I was a tiny little kid, and the internet since at least 1998, I remember those chat rooms - a/s/l? lmao!! god I'm so old, but still so young!

Early 80s for me too. Commodore 20, then 64. accessing a BBS or two to share messages. Then Fidonet. in mid to late 80s. Ran my first BBS on a 386 with two huge 20 meg HDs in it. Fidonet connected 40,000 BBSs all over the world. I could email my girlfriend in Rio de Janeiro and get a reply the next day. Internet for started in 95 when I moved here to the coast, from up north. USENET and IRC were the big ones then.. Both were an upgrade of Fidonet services. I am now retired from my work but rely heavily on my iPhone and iPad. (email and appointment calendar.) Plus searching Perb, LL, eBay, Amazon, medical info, and much more. YES for an old phart (Ms Erica ... do you like my spelling?) I rely on it a lot.
