Il Giardino Italian restaurant.

Went there for an "authentic" Italian lunch the other day. If that was a typical Italian meal I feel sorry for the Italians. Seriously.

Overpriced BAD food!

I wouldn't return if it was free!

And it wasn't ... $150 lunch for 2. Unreal.

The best part was the mozza on the appetizer plate. The rest sucked!

Might have been a one off mistake and I usually give second chances but I think it is cruising on the past. And still charging like it is special.

It isn't.

Pissed me off to the point that Italian is off my "to do" list!
Why would you ever pay that much for a meal?

The new Hawksworth Restaurant at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia is a welcome addition to the city's vibrant restaurant scene. David Hawksworth, formerly of WEST fame, has brought an all-star cast to his new resto from the Wine Director to his Pastry Chef. :thumb:
thanks for the tip, decided to take a date to Hawksworth. Had their sampling menu and it was good. pricey. but, enjoyable night at the restaurant.

any other restaurant to take to impress a date?

Nice to know that you and your date enjoyed your dining experience in one of the city's best restaurants.

Just a tip. I'm sure you already dined in Jean Georges Vongerichten's casual French Bistro MARKET at the luxury Shangri-La Hotel. The celebrity chef only visits our beautiful city 2x a year. Try to pull some strings and bring your date during one of those rare visits and have Jean Georges come out of the kitchen and meet her while having dinner. Maybe he'll even prepare an additional meal for both of you. Believe me, you will truly sweep her off her feet. Some people I know tried the same style with chefs Mario Batali and David Burke before and it worked wonders. :thumb:

Let me help out here. This is my list of places that actually deliver and don't screw you like Pino does at Cioppino. These are all places I've eaten at in the last 6 months.

Tavola. Best Italian meals (4 now) I've eaten in Vancouver, Mike Jeffs is the ultimate pro, the food is seasonal, fresh and fantastic. The room is a bit noisy. The wine list is excellent, the service great and the prices very fair.

La Brasserie. A franco german palce with a great vibe and very good food. The burger is the best in the city, they make it from the Onglet scraps. Good wines, small selection.

Nook. Great pizza and pastas and fantastic service in a very busy small room. Also owned by Mike Jeffs.

Tableau. In the Loden Hotel. Very good French Bistro with excellent prices. Pretty room and a great little deck.

Nicili Antica. Great Napoli style pizzas. Sit at the bar and take clandestine peaks at the cleavage sitting on the back wall. Softer Napoli style pizza then Nook's.

Cartel Taco. It's a cart near Pacific Centre, great Korean Tacos.

I also like the Twisted Fork but only eat breakfast there because of the all BC winelist. The Alibi Room is cool if you want beer and decent food. So is the Irish Heather, although I don't care for the owner and his bar guy Kurtis.

Just my very opinionated thoughts.

I dont know about "fancy places" that charge you an arm and a leg but I do know what I like from when I lived in Vancouver many years back....my fave place was Brothers in Gastown.....good food great service as well as really wicked chairs/tables....gotta love a throne for a chair.....as for fancy gourmet food I can outcook a lot of high-end establishments in my meagre kitchen.....for me I like Brothers....good place...not fancy or high brow....just a good place to enjoy a decent meal.....though knowing my luck the place is no longer in business.

Rather hear about places like this than the "fancy places". No surprise that people think Gotham and Il Giardino are good.

Just tried Pink Elephant on Alberni and Bute. Was really surprised how good it was and prices were very reasonable. I think they've only been open for about half a year or so. It's Thai food by the way.

Another really good SE Asian restaurant is Au Petite Cafe on Main and 31st? Best sandwiches ever for around $4.

i had the worst food i ever paid for the other night... nobody at the table was impressed. did the chef call in sick and the hostess was cooking? it was the milestones at 1210 denman. i want to write them and complain. it had no flavor at all and my plate was a 'staff and customer favorite' according to the menu. my table even felt sick the next day :(

just wanted to warn you all.
Sorry to hear of your bad dining experience and thanks for the heads up. You should send a letter of concern and be sure to include all the details from your restaurant receipt or simply scan it and attach it to your email. Unfortunately, many of these 'cookie cutter' chains have many inexperienced cooks helping out with the summer overload.

Peace.

I recommend C but also check out Five Sails at Pan Pacific or Oru at Pacific Rim. Too bad August is over, missed Oru's Sunday night seafood buffet! Or try brunch at Cafe Pacifica/Pan Pacific, lots of seafood. Raincity Grill is another good option! Beware Coast, fun/borderline obnoxious, mediocre food + poor service.

I'm seeking a restaurant with excellent seafood and a stellar view for someone near and dear's birthday dinner.

Any recommendations?

If all else fails, I'm reserving at Coast.
