First of all, the YVR staff really fucked it up. The mother asked for their help repeatedly in locating her son. They told her he was not in the airport. Had anyone of these idiots bothered to help her properly by checking to see if her son was indeed on the flight manifest, none of this would have happened.

Someone in the immigration and customs should have or ought to have know that he needed help seeing as he doesn't speak a word of English.

The actions of the RCMP officers on site. Taser first ask questions later. Did they do it because the guy was big, probably. Did they have to do it twice, absolutely not. And while we are at it, don't they know who to do CPR? Should they have tried to perform CPR before the paramedics arrived, apparently not. There was 4 of them and one of him, maybe they were threatened by the swinging keyboard. Their actions were deplorable to say the least.

What will those 4 get? Probably put on administrative leave (meaning paid vacation) immediately. Will have to attend a few "enquiries" where nothing will become of them.

This is not right.

Taser Article

There's a great mini-article in this month's (Dec.) Maxim (pg 40), the one with Sarah Michelle Gellar on the cover, titled The Year of the Taser. Harsh facts about their increasing prevalence.

I just tried to see if the article is online and googled the title to give you a link, ok, get this: the first two things on google that did come up were this: 'Zapped- Why Did Police Taser 82-year-old Grandma?' and this: 'Police Taser 6-year-old-boy at Elementary School'.

sheesh

Very frightning to see, I feel so sorry for the poor man who came to Canada from Poland to start a new life, flying all day, getting shitty customer service at YVR, no one able to help him, and the RCMP tasering him, when he walked away and didn't attack them in any way, was disgusting and the RCMP should be ashamed of themselves, and the 4 cops should be reprimanded for their gutless actions, fired and thrown in jail for life.

What makes matters worse is that the review of the incident is going to be conducted in house, as I understand it. I can't believe how ignorant the bureaucrats must be. They surely must realize that any conclusion other than a complete screw up by the officers on the scene will be seen as a whitewash. Any credibility they once had is going down the toilet.

Many experts on CBC today.

Regarding the video timeline the guy who shot it said he did it in 3 segments.

Another expert said all RCMP have CPR training.

I loved this, one guy said that during his time all the guys who couldn't cut it on the street got airport duty. The next expert commented that while that may have been the case at one time it wasn't present day policy.

I wonder how many traffic tickets the guy who took the video will get in the next few years.

I saw this and was just fucking disgusted. I have traveled various parts of the world and been helped by people in airports and trainstations. I cannot believe this shit! My op is that Vancouver Int will be sued along with the RCMP and rightfully fucking so. How can a somewhat major destination airport like YVR, that is expecting the Olympics, not have a variety of interpreters on staff?! It made me so angry watching this.

The world is watching this vid or written circumference of online. Shit hits the fan.

If I recall correctly the Auditor General issued a report a few months back that described the rank and file of the RCMP as poorly trained with low morale. Those are probably not the exact words but it was something like that.

All of our police forces pretty much get a similar range of qualities in their members as exist in our society at large. They try to recruit the best, and they get some really good people. I've met many great cops. However, like society at large, our police forces also contain a large number of mediocre folks and some really bad ones.

The video apalled me. Whatever their policies may be for staffing airports, those guys just looked like goons. I've come in contact with airport cops in many countries that we would think of, contemptuously, as banana repubilics. By and large they've shown much more professionalism than those RCMP members in that video.

Remind me never to arrive at YVR tired, confused and disoriented.

The RCMP used very poor judgement. That was very tough to watch and I think if the members had to do it all over again they might have used some common sense. I could go on and on but the long and short of it was there was no need for it.

The recruitment policies of Canada Customs and the RCMP do not attract the best and the brightest that Canada has to offer. Rather, we must be satisfied with the mediocre and the average, as the video clearly demonstrates.

I wish I had Hiro Nakamura's power so I could time travel back to that moment before the RCMP fired the taser and teleport Dziekanski to somewhere safe... from those "cops". :(

Same here. I have been to many countries and their airport cops have shown much more professionalism those those RCMP cowards.

One does not need training to deal with people needing help, it was a matter of using common sense. All he needed was to be properly attended to. All those airport authority audience and so called "officers" needed was to quickly get some interpreter to help him out of the frustrating situation, let's not forge he was there for hours and was not running away, there was plenty of time to act in a timely fashion. Instead those so called "officers" treated him like a criminal failing to put down the weapon. Without any provocation he was tasered not once but twice. 50000 volt passed through a tired and frustrated new immigrant's body twice in less than 50 seconds. What special skill were applied to tackle the situation? Are those four officers so weak not to physically overpower just one poor tired person even if they had to use the force.

Looks like the guy was having some serious problem like a panic attack and that makes people act irrationally.

I think using taser is very cruel, but I dont' understand why torture the guy further after the first one??? He was on the floor, totally incapacitated.

The only explanation I can think of is the police officers are ignorant and like to play God.

I think when they get the training they should be required to taser themselves to see what it is like and that might put things for them in perspective.

For some reason, I thought they DID get tasered? I know for sure that they get pepper-sprayed.

I think as their training they not only need to be tasered once but 2 -3 times. Just like the victim has experience in this case.

" think when they get the training they should be required to taser themselves to see what it is like and that might put things for them in perspective. "

I think that is an excellent Idea... !!!!

Our cops have tasers now. Fucking wonderful. I thought those -- along with mace and pepper spray -- were illegal in Canada.

When it comes to police negligence this is just the tip of the iceberg.

There is so much that goes on that we just never hear about.

Not all cops are bad, but a lot of them have big chips on their shoulders, and honestly have no business wearing the uniform.
About a year ago, I came across this board: www.lawenforcementforums.com, where LEO's across North America hang out and I was horrified at some of the hateful, vitriolic stuff stuff they were saying and with very little provacation, I might add. I remember one guy asked if any of them was a member of LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) and they just went completely apeshit and banned the guy.

I'm sure the taxpayers must sleep soundly at night knowing that these violent, power-drunk psychos are there to "serve and protect"

Several years ago when I was still in SFU I actually thought about joining the RCMP. I even attended one of their information sessions at the Justice Institute. However, I didn't go ahead with my application because I decided to finish my education first. I thought maybe a university degree would help me with my application. But after watching the YVR incident, I guess RCMP hires just about anybody. :(
