should chat have moderators?

I thought about it earlier, but this banning prompted me to post this ....
Should we have moderators in PERB chat?
is there such a function available for chat?
I had seen one of the moderators couple of times, but that about it.
From past experiences of many chat groups.... moderators are needed ... and swift action is sometimes necessary.

Fred .... MODs .... this is for you to digest

why not make 10 perberts who are frequently present in chat, with privilages to throw people out of chat ( and report it to PERB MODs ) .... just an idea

This Mr.Taurus was way out of line... and because chat has been a fairly friendly place these types of dudes need to be shut down fast so they dont wreck it for others.

In the month the new chat has been open we have only had this one bad duck, I think if monitors come in as often as possible for now, would be a nice thing. Although I dont see the need to have a mod in there all the time... but that is up to administration.

Mods do seem to respond fairly fast to pm's, so if this happened again I'm sure they would come into the room and settle it as quickly as they could.

No disrespect intended but that comment is so unrelated to the post. What does ANY of what you just said, have ANYTHING to do with Perb? You have been Very 'antsy' recently LG. Maybe time to get the meds adjusted lol.

Problem is no permanent record (unless mods do have a record and I don't know about it). In the case this morning, I believe a member copied the offending portion and pasted into a PM to a Mod, thanks to quick thinking.

That's the best thing to do, that way it's not heresay of what went on and the mod can decide for himself if its worthy of a ban.

I think VM has an excellent idea, make some of the frequent chatters chatroom mods, they can punt the offender right away. Aside from being disruptive (of which I agree with Annalise, that's the first time it's happened), there are also the people who sit in there and lurk for extended periods of time. If you are busy in pm, thats one thing, if you forgot to sign out, thats another thing. But to just sit there and take everything in is creepy...IMO.

I understand that Fred, but I also don't expect the mods to sit hunched over their keyboards 24-7, waiting to ban or punt asshats and lurkers out of chat. The chat is wildly successful, I think. Since it's 'ours', it should be a fun, friendly place for us to be.

let's see ... VM posts asking if mods should be part of chat ... I comment that mods are already very involved with perb and do they really need to become 'active' in the chat room or can they just stay out until someone complains and that is 'off-topic' to you?

i would like the mods to 'stay out' of everything until someone actually complains about something ... we're supposed to act like adults when possible and having a mod at standby with the hammer ready to drop at every little insult is nuts.

and is it so hard to have a 'time-out' function in chat? log in and don't type anything and in 5 minutes you're toast and out of there.

but the bottom line seems to be that the same sort of morons who cause problems on the board now seem to find the same access to chat.

Is it possible that the mod/admin keep a log of the chatroom? I know its virtually impossible to have a mod in the chatroom 24/7 just to monitor the activity in the chatroom. I dont think the proposed idea of cut and paste conversation history will work because they can be altered easily(this would include screen shot as well).

sorry, a little misunderstanding

when I said ... chat should have MODs .... I did not necessary meant .... PERB MODs. They are busy like hell reading all that crap we post and PM to them .... no need to add to their misery.

If you read my post till the end.. you will see I said.. 10 perberts who frequent the chat.

I think chat.. can have its OWN MODs ... but I really think ... in order for that place to be successful, and to grow... people, and especially girls, have to feel safe there.

a mod is a mod is a mod ... whether from perb or designated or voted for or however they get the assignment there is always the potential for things to go overboard.

why not just give the girls the 'mod' power and if someone is giving them grief its instant bye-bye. if they abuse it then i am sure they will hear about it on perb ...

but at least they have the power to stop some ass dead in his tracks.

this might be more difficult to set up than you think.... PERB registration form does not have M/F field ... so .... how would we distinguish all girls from the rest of us?
