As a Canadian, it's useful to take a step back from the fervour, and just see it for what it is. Seems more of a sales pitch than an analysis - obviously ex- US Navy guy trying to push Americans with money & influence back towards investing in (oceanic) infrastructure / domestically-owned sealift capability, instead of gnawing their fingernails off about Silicon Valley Bank. Okay, point made - the rest is embellishment.

The VC's need to kick SNAFU's like SVB off their ETFs, and instead of chasing ESG, heed PACOM's FYI about the PRC no longer being a littoral PTFB, but rather treat it like a blue water BFG, and enhance their own LTHMA, ASAP!

This one may be more relevant for this board:

Its interesting how an American company managed to revive the ship building industry right here in Vancouver, the Washington Group out of Denver and it’s owner Dennis Washington. He has the dry docks rolling, it came within a whisker of being sold off as well as the big graving dock in Esquimalt, his purchase of Seaspan which is now a major global company. The new well paying jobs created has been a huge benefit with the new coast guard ships and naval supply ship currently under construction. He even built his huge yacht the Attessa IV right here out of the previous Evergreen yacht hull, the SRY Rail link which BC Hydro sold off is going strong. Some people just know how to run things profitably.
He even scored a huge deal on his new toy Super Yacht Palladium a Russian Oligarch boat now called AV for Attessa V, not bad for a guy almost 90, apparently he started his company with a Bulldozer. I hope shipbuilding remains a strong industry here on the west coast, perhaps one day we can build our own ferries again.

Interesting that Seaspan or subsidiary is the largest container ship leasing company in the world. They have 70 some odd new container ships ordered in various sizes for different areas ( I read). Google, Seaspan fleet summary, pretty impressive stuff, sorry I don't know how to attach link. Cheers

The Captain is right the Global shipping economy and the strongest Navies decide the worlds economics. Thats why China is rapidly building new Aircraft Carriers and Warships...

First off America has a law. Foreign ships can only visit 1 port in the US and has to return home. You have to be under American Flag to move port to port in America.
What this law has done is preserved their ship building industry.

Yeah, the Jones act. It's a holdover from the Spanish-American war. It has hampered them as much as helped them, but let's not pretend the flagging of ship makes any logical sense globally. Liberia and Panama account for how many ships world wide? LOL, such might maritime powers they are ! Companies use flags on convenience for dodging regulations and taxes drives much of their flagging decisions, but make no mistake, the actual owners are always in major countries.
