As someone who has struggled with depression forever, self care is something you have to force upon yourself sometimes, but it's always worth it.

I got a haircut and shaved my beard down for the first time in 4 or 5 months.
I've been working at home, and if I force myself to get out into the woods a few times a week that helps.
Just reminding myself to get up and stretch or do some push ups or bear squats during a work day also helps a lot. Sitting for 14 hours a day destroys you, and not in a way I tend to enjoy.

Trying to be in a self aware headspace, and thinking about if/how you're meeting your personal needs is very beneficial. It's easy to get overwhelmed and depressed by the state of the world. Taking a step back and thinking about your state of being is important.

This answear depends on whether you are young, middle age, or older (past 60). When you are youngish, you don't give a damm, and recovery is usually quick after a night of drinking... it gets less and less as you age.
Moderation is the key.
So is exercise and stretching....

Usually I will go out to a café and sit there by myself for hours when I feel depressed. Caffeine, being in my own world, plus the distance I walk (yea, for this to work, you gotta walk instead of drive or take a bus) to and from the café, always makes me feel mentally better when I come home later at night. I cook, so I will make dinner, watch some Netflix, by which point it's time to rest. I find this helps me maintain my mental health, but it might not work for everyone, such as nature lovers etc.

I'm in construction so I build shit! My yard has great wood wells, a huge deck and gazebo, a waterwheel fountain, barrel flower pots, a 6 tier planter with herbs and flowers. My garden has never looked better, my cars are spotless and tuned. The inside of my house is finished and spotless, everything repaired or replaced. I play my '58 Gibson Les Paul till my fingers bleed, on great nights my daughter comes over and we jam till the wee hours in my studio, she's got a great voice! I'm not just saying that because I'm her dad, she truly does. She's putting the finishing touches on her version of Evanescence " Bring me to Life" right now and it sounds fucking great! As I live near the mountains, I hike up there daily with my two beloved hound dogs and snap some great pictures. I adore teasing and triggering conservatives on Twitter and Facebook. I built an outdoor fire ring with wok so I'm loving trying to master the cuisine of SE Asia and getting some good results and some not so good but using the herbs and spices from the garden is fun. At the end of a hard day I'll soak in the hot tub with a novel of the week and a glass of red. My daughter says I'm over compensating for being lonely by staying busy but I find it good therapy. My thoughts are mostly happy and my outlook is positive and I can see light at the end of this tunnel because it means a return to visiting with some very fine ladies when we're on the other side of this thing. The Kids are Alright.

I just went through a devastating and very messy breakup with the person I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with. It's amazing what a new cut, color and hairstyle will do. Got my nails done, too and I feel brand new! Bubble baths in the soaker tub helped as well.

Cooking healthy and delicious meals with a good friend and spending quality time with her and her children took my mind off of things when I wasn't venting. I went for a walk to help clear my mind and I'd really love to get out into nature. Things are still complicated but I'm feeling a hell of a lot better.

Just added a food dehydrator to my kitchen gadgetry.
Cinnamon apple chips, pineapple chunks, ginger slices, wasabi peas and now dabbling with crackers. Flax, buckwheat, hemp hearts, pumpkin seeds.
Becoming a dehydrating fool!!
