Roy Spencer says we don't know yet how changes are happening

MADISON - Roy Spencer is speaking up about his belief that Earth is not headed toward a global warming disaster.

Spencer, a principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and former NASA scientist, said he knows he's in the minority with his opinions, but he doesn't believe manmade influences are causing catastrophic climate changes.

"We see something change in our climate and we blame ourselves," Spencer told the Republican Women of Madison during a lunch meeting Wednesday.

Spencer contends there is not yet enough known about the Earth's atmosphere to understand exactly what occurs naturally to stabilize the earth's climate.

"I don't think we understand what happens. We can watch it happen on the (climate) models, we know it happens, but we don't know for sure how it happens," Spencer said.

Developing new energy technology is the only way to know for sure, he said, because he believes the existing climate models are too sensitive.

He said everything about the climate is tied to precipitation systems. But the climate models don't consider precipitation efficiency. However, he said the little evidence that exists shows precipitation systems act as a natural thermostat to reduce warming.

"The air you're breathing right now was, in the last few days, part of a precipitation system," he said.

Spencer said the fears about global warming have people wondering whether something should be done now to stop it.

"That's the precautionary principle, and it makes no sense because we don't live our lives that way," Spencer said. "Everything in life has risks and benefits; we could die from eating food."

Energy is needed by humanity, Spencer said while poking fun at Al Gore and other environmentalists who talk about conservation.

"Most of us are already doing what we can to conserve, but it won't have any impact on global warming," Spencer said.

Two weeks ago, he testified in a congressional hearing on global warming. Next month, he'll make presentations at the White House and to top evangelical leaders on his research.

"It's a busy field and keeps me awake," Spencer said.

Uh huh. A "scientist" busy giving presentations to evangelicals. Maybe he will also pooh pooh evolution? I'm sure the "Huntsville Times" is the ultimate source of scientific inquiry.

What I find interesting is...

... had I removed that part from the article there would be hardly a disenting comment about his credibility.

But because everyone HATES anything to do with religion so much he automatically is not qualified to speak or know anything of value.

I think bigotry is next to ignoramous in the dictionary!

Uh..

But we're all going to be killed by the giant asteroid hitting the earth and causing an ice age long before global warming cooks our tootsies.

Or was it acid rain that was going to melt the planet before the asteroid hits?

Or maybe it was a huge nuclear reactor meltdown (China Syndrome) that was going to end the earth?

Oh, no wait, it was some kid hacking into the NORAD computer and starting a nuclear war with the russians that was going to cause a nuclear winter and kill everyone.

Or was it all those kids playing role playing games that were going to kill everyone on the planet, according to Pope Al Gore's wife.

Well, I know it was ONE of those thing..

and your comment assumes a check wasn't made on said "scientists" credibility... certainly you must acknowledge a "scientist" openly and unabashedly mixing science with religion leaves himself open to challenge, to criticism...

this Roy Spencer is an acknowledged advisor of the Interfaith Stewardship Alliance (ISA): --- the ISA is a coalition of religious leaders, clergy, theologians, scientists, academics, and other policy experts committed to bringing a proper and balanced Biblical view of stewardship to the critical issues of environment and development.

:D perhaps Spencer is reinforcing his faith beliefs - cause we all know that it's Jeebus' doin

Blah blah blah

uneducated leftie tripe

Hmm, a quick check finds his bio:

Dr. Spencer received his B.S. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Michigan in 1978 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Meteorology from the University of Wisconsin in 1980 and 1982. He then continued at the University of Wisconsin through 1984 in the Space Science and Engineering Center as a research scientist. He joined NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in 1984, where he later became Senior Scientist for Climate Studies. He resigned from NASA in 2001 and joined the University of Alabama in Huntsville as a Principal Research Scientist. Dr. Spencer has served as Principal Investigator on the Global Precipitation Studies with Nimbus-7 and DMSP SSM/I, and the Advanced Microwave Precipitation Radiometer High Altitude Studies of Precipitation Systems. He has been a member of several science teams: the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Space Station Accommodations Analysis Study Team, Science Steering Group for TRMM, TOVS Pathfinder Working Group, NASA Headquarters Earth Science and Applications Advisory Subcommittee, and two National Research Council study panels.

Since 1992 Dr. Spencer has been the U.S. Team Leader for the Multichannel Imaging Microwave Radiometer (MIMR) team and the follow-on AMSR-E team. In 1994 he became the AMSR-E Science Team leader.

He received the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal in 1991, the MSFC Center Director’s Commendation in 1989, and the American Meteorological Society’s Special Award in 1996.
But, I'm sure that YOU are just so much smarter and know much more about it than he does.

Uh huh...

You just want Al in the white house so you can be the next Monica... you're already wearing your blue dress and everything.

Sorry JJinVan and Otbn, Global Warming is pretty well accepted as fact by most notable scientists in existance today.

But heh your posts are great for novelty reading.

c'mon jj... open your narrow mindedness up just a wee little bit... the theme here is questioning the credibility of a learned person's science-religion mix/balance.

..... nothing about politics..... nothing about presuming to be smarter

your Al/Monica/blue dress comments are quite telling - what a sad, frustrated little man you are.

LOL - thanks... did not know this - there's been this interesting little Inconvenient thread chugging along lately. Guess you haven't been following it :D

So the entire list of advisors at the ISA is discredited because of your lack of belief in a God?

I guess that makes you God!

Are you "Jeebus"?

do you read ... or interpret, discredit? do you read ... or interpret, a disbelief in a god?

the entire list? ... or just the one you've offered up for comment?

do you place divine associations on anyone that might question your posts? :D

am I Jeebus? uhhh, which one are you looking for?

C'mon yourself - you have an obvious bias here yourself.

Really??
So your saying that because he may or may not believe in God he is compromised in his opinion?

Let's say he does believe in God, which is fine because Albert Einstein did, are you promoting that he is not educated enough or just biased?

I submit that your obvious disbelief in a God makes you biased in the oposite corner as well as your secular scientists.

How do you argue with someone like you??

I would ask you to look up the term lunatic in the dictionary but I don't know if it would register with you.

So I want you to do something, I want you to get up from your chair, stop reading this post & get up!

Go to your bathroom!

Go there right now!

Go & look in the mirror!

Look in the mirror & stare deep into the eyes looking back at you!

Then... go to the window & open it...
... open it & stick your head out & YELL!

At the top of your lungs YELL OUT!!!

And tell the WORLD:

I'm a LUNATIC & I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!!!

oh my! argue... why not discuss?

I might consider your advice but at the moment I'm deep in a captivating read... "Genesis and the Big Bang : The Discovery of Harmony Between Modern Science and the Bible." Comes highly recommended by the ISA - have you read it? :D

No, but thank you for the recommendation!

I will have to look for it the next time I pop into the local Christian book store to pick up yet another Bible since I wore out the previous one! - again

Oh & as a side note; the "Big Bang theory" is hardly modern science & it is about to be disproven if the universal theory gains any credibility.

For the disbelievers out there...

you can always find the odd crack pot scientist who goes against all the other scientists. I remember there were scientists who said hiv doesnt cause AIDS, and some even said they would inject themselves to prove it.

also, some scientists who do studies claiming that man is not causing global warming, are in fact funded by the big oil companies to do their research - hmmm.

worse, was that many of the studies against were done by economists! not scientists.

first, the naysayers were saying that there is no evidence that the earth is warming. now since this has been accepted, they say that man is not the main cause....makes you think about the many decades that the tobacco industry had their scientists claiming that smoking DID NOT cause Cancer.

The bottom line is that there will always be people who do not want to believe and they will find out whatever (uncredible) information to support their views. They cannot be convinced no matter what.

This guy's background seems pretty impecable I've never heard any of the God lover's being opposed to global warming so it doesn't seem that valid a point to me. His credentials seem very similar to James Hansen one of the leaders of the Global Warming scientists.

There was also a good interview with Richard Lindzen in the National Post yesterday Lindzen is an atmospheric physicist at MIT but I'm sure someone has some background they can provide to discredit him as well. He was mostly talking about what a scumbag Al Gore is and how the scientific advisor he collaborated with on his movie who passed away had written a paper discrediting most of the claims in his movie and how Gore's people tried to prevent the publishing of the paper. He pointed out how Gore had formed a corporation specializing in wind and solar technology and that his real motivation isn't to be president but to be a billionaire.

His parting advice was to encourage more people to study math and physics to combat the current hysteria.

JJ, I find it hilarious that anyone who disagrees with you is a crackpot and anyone who agrees with you is God's gift. There is no middle ground is there?

The fact is that there are scientists out there with impecable credentials on both sides of the argument, albiet more on the side supporting global warming than not. However, just because more people say something is, does not make it so.

I personally believe that man has had an impact on the environment be it weather, polution, fishing or whatever and that we should take reasonable and appropriate action to minimize this effect. Hell, we are the top preditor on this planet, how can we not have had an effect. However, that does not mean we should destroy our economy and our lifestyles in the process.

I accept that global warming is occuring and that man has had some impact on it. I do not accept however that man is the sole cause of global warming however, as some of the cause is probably due to natural cycles in the earth's climate. There is too much scientific evidence out there that supports both the man-made and the natural cycle sides of the argument. Therefore, it is highly likely that both are true and if that is the case, then the only real question is how much has man's activities added to the natural cycle?

The climate is going to change. It would even if humans didn't exist. To what degree are we modifying the way it changes? I have no idea. Even the experts have only models.

I'm taking a break from modeling a set of chemical data right now, while I read PERB. Is my model right? Well, I like it. But it could be completely out to lunch, and there will be those who look at my work and say that.

So, the climate change models are certainly open to challenge. Still, it seems pretty logical that we ought to stop spewing crap into the atmosphere as soon as we can. Spewing waste into the air makes about as much sense as shitting in our drinking water.
