I was just sort of curious how many of us that frequent this site and, 'industry' in general are religous... or believe in God, or some other being? I thought it might make an interesting poll.

Perchance have you been thinking about immorality or your possible death lately?

I believe you can have great benefit from just being very spiritual without the constraints of a man made organized faith.

I believe that the energy we all share here in this realm that makes us conscious and alive is Love. I believe there are universal laws that work with this energy to produce any outcome you really want. I believe we are all magnificent beings who all have 'God' living within us. We are more powerful than we can even fathom.
HUGE Bang from the hammer hitting the nail on the head. BRAVO !!:)
Especially the part about being spriritual without the constraints of a man
made organized faith. Spirituality comes from within, not from a text.

If I was a religious practising person from all the religions I've read about
this one would be my choice as well. Being that is if I wanted to follow
a doctrine.

The one thing I abhor the most about religion is how it is/was used to
kill/harm/attack any other race/religion because of their divine reasoning
to do so. With that thought would countless peoples have
perished were there no religion to have us called to arms?

Oy.........did the devil really make me do it? :D

I think there's a deffinite difference between being religious and being spiritual. I could never belong to an organised religion, however I do consider myself deeply spiritual.

I don't piss all over someone's religion. If I don't agree..I don't make asshole statements. Tolerance

I am totally religious but I have athiest, wiccan, agnostic friends...I don't piss on their houses and they don't piss on mine.

Absolutely.....as it should be...I have my beliefs, friends of mine who have there's always seem to enjoy discrediting others (like a used car salesman) to further their own points of view....on this subject I subscribe to the adage" if you have nothing good to say say nothing at all"

My own views.... I'm an athiest, and proud to say it. I've seen both pro's and cons of religion and have seen far more cons then pros.

I believe tollreance can be as much of a virtue as it can be a vice. Religion is something we should be able to openly discuss without attacking eachother. Those with the attitude, "its my religion don't question it" should start questioning their own beliefs. The only way people can progress is by learning, and studying. Religions hold on to their respective faiths with iron fists.. and speak volumes of intolerance.

For catholics, and most christians homo-sexuality is just as wrong today as it was 5,000 years ago. Which to me says nothing about tollerance, or change.

Well said. I always liked this quote which is along the same line--

"The will of man is unconquerable, not even God can conquer it." Malcom Lowry

As to religion, heaven etc. I'll go with Mark Twain who said something to the effect of, "When I meet the people down here who are going to heaven, I don't think I wish to spend any time there." --or something to that effect.

I agree with this except for two different sects - extremists and scientologists.
Both are assholes in their own right....:D

Religion is complete garbage. It is just a bunch of made up mumbo jumbo. The masses simply can’t accept that our lives are completely meaningless and that you will die some day and cease to exist.

There is a very good reason for the inversely proportional relationship between religious belief and IQ.

You can either follow the laws of science or believe in a man with a white beard in the sky watching your every move.

...this is a fascinating thread. Surely "politics" has been discussed at length...and, of course, with playoff season upon us....hockey will get it's workout. So, time for some good old fashioned religious discussion!

I find it amusing that many threads will wander along...then a post will be made about a "study" or a claim made about something unable to be substantiated...so, I would love to see the evidence leading to the conclusion that "There is a very good reason for the inversely proportional relationship between religious belief and IQ."

I very much doubt such a study has ever or ever will be conducted. Who would fund such a thing? I am, at best, agnostic...but who cares? I don't expect to get dissed for it....nor would I diss another for their "faith"...whatever that "faith" happens to be. I admire faith actually, I just may not share it. As for intelligence....lord, I've met some incredibly intelligent people with intense faith....and I've met some idiots too. That's just life. It's been my experience that the intelligence and faith operate completely independently. But, that's just my experience, your experience is undoubtedly different. Which, forms your opinion...and thank Whomever...that we have the right to hold an opinion.

One closing thought....the "religion starts wars" thing....absolutely it does. People believe in it passionately...and anything people believe in passionately provides an opportunity for manipulation by the few.

So, imagine a world completely without religion or faith of any kind? Would that, then, be the end of conflict? Or would some new reason crop up?

As it's raining, I simply am taking this day off. And, I KNOW you care!:D

College professors are three times more likely to be atheist or agnostic than the general population.

College professors have a higher average IQ than the general population.

Using the Socratic Method you may stumble upon an answer.

You can do a Google search to find some recent surveys of college professors in the US.

nah, I'll take your word for it. So you then extrapolate this data to fit the rest of the population. A little bit suspect, but certainly your right to do so. As any "college professor" could tell you, statistics can be made to fit whatever point you are attempting to make.

This is an opinion argument. As I mentioned, you most assuredly have the right to hold whatever opinion you choose. No one should ever attempt to deny you that right.

For the sake of this discussion, you are, therefore, correct. I, on the other hand, must be wrong.

Oh well.
