I am wondering if there is a way to convert my large collection of record albums to digital. Is there a cheap way?
What kind of quality will I find.

I have a fairly good turntable. I just don't know if this is possible.

Are there any software programs that can help in doing this?

Thanks

Ironhead,,there is no way your going to get the same sound ,recording your analog to digital,,,your going to loose the the depth and warmth only an LP can give on a good system,,,,,,you say you have a good turntable,,,what is it and what do you have for the rest of your system??
I've done many recordings from vinyl to many mediums and have still not found anything out there YET!!!! that can compare.
But then,if you have a tin ear,,it wouldn't matter,I'm sure some one here can help you out.

It is going to be a weird blend of equipment involving some tube amps and ending up with a lot of modern equipment. A strange combination of analog and digital equipment.

Our of curiousity, what are you using for speakers? :D

Just a suggestion - find eMule or other share type program, and you might have all your collection for free in MP3 (from which you can transform on CDs). Its gonna take a while (depends how big is your collection).

But beware...

I agree with virg, just start downloading.

Recording from vinyl to your HDD, cleaning it up, adding track markers, etc...is a big hassle.

You will need something like Adobe Audition. You can't hook your table directly to your PC, gotta run it through your amp first. Watch for subsonics when recording. If you have hi-end old skool equipment there was probably a "subsonic filter" (see fig 1-a) switch on your pre-amp, turn it on. You may have encountered those before, it's when the woofer on your speaker starts going wild!! You will also need one of these or something like it.

What you could do is play your LPs while placing a microphone to the gramophone and record the audio to a 8 track tape player. Play the 8 track recording then place a microphone to your speakers and record the audio to a cd recorder.

Yes! If you read many of the re-issue old classical cd labells, many of them have converted from the analogue to digital or you call it digital re-mastering. Unfortunately you don't have the equipments. Alternately, you can send your old LPS to some sound studios, they can convert them for you!

Hope it helps!
