I can understand why you would perceive things that way, but I'm telling you the desire is there. What's needed is patience.
With some the desire its there however with others.........

My neighbours in Vancouver were from Hong Kong. The father worked with the CN railroad so he communicated quite well in english, his children were born here so ditto, however the mother who lived in Vancouver for 14 years couldn't speak a lick of english and i believe she had no desire to learn....after 14 years what would one think?

However Mrs. Mah was one of the kindness women i would ever meet and that extended to her family. I never cared that she couldn't speak english but i would have liked to have a conversation with her..........even if limited.

"Swim back to china" isn't the sort of thing that should induce racial hysteria. It's ignorant and they're assholes, but calling it racism is just handy.
A while back, can't remember when or what, but I stated that a certain post was "quite possibly the stupidest comment I've ever seen on PERB".

We have a new champion.

Of course "swim back to China" is racist.

What else is it? Prejudice against aquatic sports?

Give your head a shake.

Having said that - I'm not sure Verb's reaction was the proper one. As was stated earlier - violence on violence....unless your life is in danger....where does it end?

And I think they are calling my bluff....why did you think they were standing like 5 feet away from me??? So their friend wouldn't get hurt!

I think this series of posts has gone on long enough. I'm sorry that you felt upset by what some "punks" said to your uncle. But I still feel that you overreacted. Not being there, who will ever know.

Would I have done something different, if all conditions were true, most likely, but I wasn't there.

Never did denied I have overreacted but did I think the bat was needed? Yes, I felt that it was needed for my safety at the time

Was the slaps needed?? NO...I was angry!!!

Was the coke and wallet needed?? Nope...I was pissed.

I don't think that I said it was too hard, just that it was very difficult and that patience could be shown. And I also don't think that you can really compare the situations of an adult learning a language to that of a baby.

Someone's already mentioned the brain developement factor, but we also interact with children much more differently than adults. We tend to speak more simply, more slowly and approach them with much more patience and cheer. If an adult is struggling with a language, there is often a tendency to dismiss the person as dumb. However, when a child is struggling in the similar way, there is much more tolerance shown to his or her mistakes.
agree with what you write aznboi9, very true about the attitude towards a baby learning to speak compared to the attitude towards an adult learning a new language. But still I stand by my opinion, I am a firm believer that if there is a desire to learn, it is not an impossible task.

Life is all about the choices you make.

True.....But t-shirt quotes like that doesn't motivate people but instead discourage them to get more involved within the community!

He must be a little shoked that you have to carry a bat around just to get a coke at McDonalds.

This topic has been beat to death.

it does not really matter, but obviously more than one, so I am not writing nonsense.

And comparing whether or not it is easier or not for adults to learn, I don't care, sure you can argue that babies are more receptive, but perseverence and hard work goes a longer way than just being of an age bracket where it is easier to learn.
Obviously you're lying about being able to speak more than one language. You speak only one, and that's English. It's obvious from the way you talk. I have plenty of experience with language, as I used to be trilingual, and as an adult have tried to become fluent in German as well. You can't fool me. You're plain not being truthful.

Nice to be viewed as a champ, but I just don't agree.

It's no one's place to say that they KNOW that since some idiot kid said "swim back to china" that he hates chinese people. That's like saying you KNOW that some asshole hates fat people because you overheard him calling some guy a fat ass or that you know someone must be a homophobe because you heard him call some guy a fag. All politcally incorrect, all wrong, all insensitive, but to assume that this indicates hatred of an entire group of people only instills the sort of fear that leads to overweight people, gay people, people of every ethnicity (of course this covers every single citizen in the country/world) etc. carrying baseball bats "for protection" because they now know that people hate them.

It's the "I know they hate [insert specific race or other minority here]" mentality of people that leads to incidents like this. Due to the racial hysteria that political correctness has morphed into, people might as well be carrying signs saying "if you want to either really piss me off or make me cry, mention my ethnicity"...this leads to punks like Verb ran into viewing it as just an easy way to hit a soft spot.....not unlike the "fat ass" comment would have definitely had an impact on an overweight person.

If you're to assume that anyone uttering the sort of ignorance that was uttered by the punks Verb encountered is a racist rather than just the ignorant bastards that they probably are, you'd also have to assume that anyone that's ever used terms like : fag, gimp, lesbo, bulldyke, etc. has an undeniable hatred of gay men, disabled people, gay women, etc. There's always a chance that they do harbour resentment or hostility towards these minorities, but there's an equal chance that they're just insesitive or ignorant. Assuming the worst only results in unwittingly creating the worst.

When legitimate racism is encountered, there's usually no mistaking it for ignorance, political incorrectness or some kids social retardation.

Verb..I wish I could take you and your Uncle out to lunch to show him that not all Canadians are brain dead, I love going to different cultures and learning new words in what ever tongue, and a smile goes a long way to help things, and kudos to uncle for trying to communicate....Its tough to handle the lowlife in Van, but no one wins in physical fights ,both sides pay a price ie. time ,court, lawyers, soreness but you have to do what you feel is right..I found that the best thing to do is try and stay out of areas which are more likely to have lowlife around...that said..I travel around with not a bat or a gun[too easy to use] but a 100 pound dog who everyone loves, who speaks 180 different dialects and with one look stops people in their tracks even ones with bats hammers etc. He has been a peacemaker more then a few times and if he was at rotten ronnies[he loves it ] he would have scared the punks off and then would have made friends with 8 year old,he loves kids and they all love him.

Its tough to keep track of this story first you got your bat and met them at the door then it changed to they were following and menacing you to your car then it morphed again to you were only parked 5 feet away from the door then it was that they were yelling at you from 5 feet away which is what prompted your attack so I guess they had just come out the door and had to walk by since you were parked right at the door. Then the interrogation takes place with you slapping them and talking their wallets and writing down their info and pouring a coke on their ID which they stood still for because a poor defenceless old man and an 8 year old had a steering wheel lock on them. Yup it sure sounds like they were some real bad asses. Where did the coke come from?? Did you still have your happy meal in your hand when you came back from your car with a bat and club?

Thank god mick's back he's an expert on stories where the facts keep changing he'll sort this one out :D
