Probably not the best title but I can't think of another.
Ok the reason for this thread.

Is it just me or has anyone else notice that when Laibar Singh was here and announcements were made to deport him his supporters were front and centre when the cameras were rolling as was the group No-one is Illegal.
And yet when Immigration wanted to deport Mikail Lennikov No-One is Illegal was not present in front of the cameras.

Racism is a funny thing.

Where I used to work years back, we had an east indian lady as the boss.
One day a young east indian guy got promoted to be a supervisor.
This guy was nowhere near the best pick.
No experience, with many people more deserving.
When the big bosses found out they questioned her pick.

She told them......."In our culture it's the responsibility of the woman, to ensure success of young east indian males"

I am not sure if that's racist, or sexist, or both. But she got away with it.

I just know if I made someone a boss and said. "Its my culture to make sure to promote other white people"
It would certainly be viewed as racist.

agreed.....completely. To be blunt, that event was a failure on the part of whatever management existed.

I live in an ethnically diverse area. Some of my best friends have been of ethnically diverse background. Some of my finest enemies have also been the same. There is good....and there is bad....regardless of culture, creed, or race. My daughters b/f visited....I call him "peckerhead"....but, that's just because that's what dad's should do. I know how I was around young and attractive members of the opposite sex...I don't guess he is much different. He's a good kid but but he's just a kid.
At one point during the evening, he starts on about how where I live is a bit "sketchy"....and how, if it weren't for people like me moving in, it would surely be a rough area. I smiled at that and assured him that I was no benefit to the neighbourhood. I also told him how I was pretty sure there were some gooks, some chinks, a couple of spics and maybe even a nigger living in the same building. He kind of blinked and didn't say a lot more.

My best friends are colour blind.

kindest,

eddie.

the Indian community here in Vanc

originally raised a bunch of money for his hospital bills....but they soon tired of him, and supporting him, and let him get sent back...

this russian fellow was a KGB flunky, so we have every right not to allow him to stay...plus he was deceptive in his immigration application....but when you are used to killing people as part of your job, the lying comes easy....too bad about his family that grew up here though....

Canada and Canadians are the world's suckers for a sob story, so it's surprising when the Feds do take a stand

I have a similiar hiring story.... I used to work for a Chinese controller (banana)....whenever we would advertising for a new position, he would filter out all the Indian names....by Indian, I mean Singh, not Geronimo...life is too short for that bs.....but it's been going on for a couple of thousand of years, and won't be stopping anytime soon.

How about the other side of it? When Laibar Singh was in question, the media attention, letter-writing campaigns were so heated to get him tossed out of the country, it was a daily event reading letters in the Sun. With the white Russian guy, I don't hear a peep. Maybe that is why minorities rally around their own.

India was occupied for 250 years by Britain. Yes, it's ancient history, but Gandhi spent (and gave) his life for the cause. When Britain finally left, it divided the country in a totally unnatural manner. Thus the endless strife between Pakistan & India.

The same thing was done in Africa. The continent was divided haphazardly without any thought to tribal history.

I had to pay more for my university education because I wasn't a visible minority or an immigrant.

I pay more for my rent because I'm white while my neighbours are subsidized because of their race.

at least....you got or....are getting that education. Well done in spite of all the obstacles you have been presented. Now....when you are done....move somewhere where infinitely fewer chances exist for you to do so. I love that we are inclusive....many don't...but I do. I vote accordingly. Immigration drives capitalism.

The racism thing is a double edged sword that is massively abused.Personally I got into an altercation/arguement at work with a guy who is of east indisn origin/birth.....when the discussion ended he said "you white guys are all the same"...I let it slide and paid it no mind...yet the statement he made was racist towards me as I am caucasian but if I had pressed the issue it would have been swept under the rug.In another instance a couple of years ago I was in a chatroom and I was discussing the new casino "Grey Eagle" at the Tsuu Tina reserve.....I said it was the best casino in the city and very flashy but the drink service sucked....I followed this up by saying "but what do you expect in Calgary these days"....I immediatly had a gal who was of native background call me a racist as she jumped to the conclusion that my comment was about the native's problem with alchohol.....though the stupid bitch just did not comprehend how bad the basic service industry was back then.....during the boom time in Alberta the service industry sucked wet ass for decent customer service.....you know like going into a Tim Hortons and hopefully getting in and out in under 20 minutes..There you go....a statement about how the service was bad got turned around into an absurd allegation/accusation of racism.

Best thing I can say is ASSHOLES come in every color ;)

...and we can look to the USA to see how well capitalism works. Instead of giving all of our power to 'the rich', we're giving it to the immigrants. I live in Richmond. I go into some stores where the owners don't speak English, and the signs aren't English.

I'm not saying, "Put an end to immigration", but we need to consider the fact that we're burying OUR culture.
What you appear to be saying is to put an end to non-white immgration. At least that is what it sounds like to me.

Let's see: you make a derogatory statement about an entire city then complain that someone thought you were racist. Prejudice is prejudice, whether about a city, colours or nationalities. I have been to Calgary many times since 1976 and have received good service and bad service, really no different than Vancouver.

ok, let's be clear on this...I hate Calgary because of the Flames, not due to actually knowing anyone there....so that can't be considered a prejudice....in the same way as racist tones.....I also hate Toronto, Colorado, San Jose and a few more

Nope. Statements on the internet are always interpretted as absolute. If I say, "I don't like it", people read "I hate it".

All that I'm saying is curb the immigration a little. Let's work on solving some of the current problems first. Instead of 500,000 immigrants per year, cut it to 200,000.

Try to think of what problems may hit us in 5 or ten years, and how a huge population may not help. Overpopultation, polution, unemployment, health care costs, social security for 65+ citizens who never actualy worked in Canada....the list goes on.

But then, if capitalism gets strong, that won't be a problem...if we're rich.
With Canada's birth-rate, without immigration, we won't have the tax base to support the aging boomers. There is also a shortage of skilled workers, projected to get much worse as baby boomers retire. Many of these skilled workers come from Asia as they are very well educated. EG: the technology sector in India is one of the most advanced possibly outpacing even the U.S. Same with China.

You may want to read this:

http://www.readersdigest.ca/mag/2002/04/immigrants.html

your final comment really surprises me. Capitalism is strong here. Canada is one of the richest countries in the world.

I did not make a derogatory statement about Calgary.I made a statement about the lousy quality of the service industry in the city at the height of the oil boom.In broader terms what I am talking about is that nearly everything sucked wet ass...you could go to a safeway to buy groceries and there were long lines...same goes for a tim hortons/mcdonalds/7-11....any place where entry level people worked including staff that worked as waitresses/waiters....there were just not enough people in those entry level jobs to deal with the large volume of business across the entire range of various positions.....so that meant that service sucked in general......and obviously I am not referring to the service industry that is discussed on PERB LOL.

you don't have a culture, get used to it. if you're talking about who was here first i don't know, but i saw a shit load of totem pole like promotion during the olympics. if that's the case native indians shouldbe bitching the loudest but it seems they've been given some handouts assuming they can beat certain odds. if you're talking about anybody of european descent then aren't they immigrants too?

I think what he's trying to say is that immigrants should be coming in to Canada to be CANADIAN. Not just some East Indian/Chinese/Japanese/Russian/Mexican/etc person that just happens to live in Canada.

Am I Anglo-Saxon? Nope. But I sure am a Canadian, who just happens to genetically be from an ethnic group.
