If I'm entertaining someone who likes beer, what selections should I have on hand? I can't ask this person ahead of time. Thanks for your advice!

mmmmmm beer

That is a tough question, there are dozens of great beers. I sure if you asked ten beer drinkers what the best is you'll get 10 different answers.

Personally I hate the mass market crap like bud, blue and canadian.

Some of the ones I like the best are Becks, Warstiener, Tsingtoa, Fort Garry Dark (you can only get this in Manitoba), Rickerts Red, Big Rock Traditional, Tree Amber ale.

There are also about 20 or 30 others and I always like to try the local micro brews when ever I travel. Granville Island brewing makes some very good beers.

I know that this is not a lot of help, but it's always better to try something new and unique.

I drank 2 or 3 beer one night and actually prefer the mass produced varieties. I suggest some middle of the road type beers also Grandville Island Brewery or Okanagan Spring Lagaer, Just a suggestion

I would suggest starting with a sample selection of various beers ie pale ales, cream ales, lagers etc. I recall that Sleeman's offered a dozen beers with like 4 honey brown lagers, 4 cream ales and 4 pale ales in the pack. That way you can find out what he likes and then experiment with different brands later on.

Very tough question! The biggest question is whether this person prefers ales or lagers. I guess you don't have any way of knowing though... I'm an ale man myself,. so I can't really give you any advice for lagers. For ales, though, I like the following:

Double Diamond - it's a British import that you'll find in a tall can. Smooth, creamy, and just lovely.
Newcastle Brown Ale - another British ale, this one's pretty easy to find and relatively cheap. Not a premium ale, but I really like it.
Killer Bee Honey Ale - I've actually only ever had this in a pub when I was visiting Victoria, and I have no idea where to find it. If you do find it though, it's a great flavourful ale whith a slightly nutty, slightly smokey finish.
Guinness - Mmmm, Guinness! Seriously though, people either love Guinness or hate it, so without knowing which camp this person falls into, you should probably avoid it.
Sleemans - various varieties - Sleemans ales are pretty decent, and tend to appeal to a fairly wide audience. I don't think I know anyone who just loves Sleemans, but I also don't think I know any beer drinkers who don't like their stuff.
Granville Island - various varieties - Pretty much the same comments as Sleemans.

I highly reccommend the first 3 on this list, as they're my own personal favorites, but the last 2 on the list are your safest bets.

if you wanna try great local micros, may I suggest either Granville Island Brewing (the Hefeweizen) or R & B Brewing (the Red Devil Ale).

For a lighter ale, I'd recomend the Granville Island Pale Ale. It won't offend anyone but it isn't so mediocre that a beer enthusiast won't like it. My ATF lager is Tuborg. What I really like is something darker like Race Rocks amber ale or Black Widow but I'm not sure if either is available in Vancouver.

Good luck! WS.

your mom says hi.
yes there are many fancy beers out there of which i am fan and many of the ones mentioned above are a very good choice. only problem is that for some of them you really have to have a taste for them.

if you want simple and easy and something that would reach a wide range of tastes, you can not really go wrong with heineken.

very rarely have i ever come across anyone that did not like heineken.

Personally, I'm partial to Unibroue (from Quebec). My personal fave is Trois Pistoles but Maudite and Fin du Monde are also good. These are all strong beers that don't have a great deal of fizz. Some people might not like that.

Personally, I found Guinness very hard to drink. I guess that's why they try to market it like a cold remedy ("Good for You").

grolsch (green bottle with the ceramic stopper) is pretty good too.

yes Duvel (meaning Devil) is a great belgian ale you can also find in Vancouver sometimes. Sweetiepie if you want to do some reaserch on Belgian beers, go to Stella's on Commercial Drive, they have an awesome selection of Belgian and imported beer and great eats too, not to mention nice atmosphere.

Also some of my import favorites! Espesually Fin du Monde, a couple of those and I really felt like it was the end of the world.

...Oh! And McEwens. A high octane beer from Britain.

...Oh...Oh...Oh! And I cannot forget the lambics out of Belgium, Mort Subite, beers they are sweet and best served as 'dessert beer'.

NBC, Nelson Brewing Co. based in Nelson, BC makes a line of excellent micro-brews, and they don't use any of the chemical shit that gives you a headache, as with Molson, Labatt's, Kokanee and Rickard's.

Nelson brews a fine IPA, a brown ale, and a dark stout. All are recommended.
