Question about texting apps

Hi all,
Gotta question: what's a good texting app?
So I understand that people these days can use a free texting app if they dont want to use their carrier's number. I like this idea.

What sare some good apps for an Apple phone? I googled this and so many pop up that i dont know what is good and what is crap!

I use textnow on android. You can delete the app any time, reinstall it later and all your messages come back - even ones that you received while not installed. You can turn off all notifications too so it's good for being incognito.
