There are just too many variables.
Type of foods. Combination of foods. Quantities of foods. Access to foods. Cost of foods. Proteins and contents of foods.
Then there is lifestyle. Family. Careers. Schedules. Stresses. Workloads. Commitments. Time management. Convenience.
Throw in education. Mental health. Depression. Medications. Abilities. Personal biology.
These are not excuses- they are realities for many.
One size does not fit all. Simplifying to "choice" is unrealistic, IMO. Sure, we all have choices- but are they palatable or relative to our own situations?
And this comes from someone who is reasonably fit, mentally (debatable? :)) and physically healthy, relatively affluent with less responsibilities and commitments than the average bear.
But like anything, success takes very hard work- and effort counts.
There are always exceptions, but the above are excuses for most people. The simple fact is "mental health", or "stress" isn't the reason we have an obesity epidemic, and so many kids are developing adult-onset diabetes at 12.

A great many people are willfully too inactive, and eat too much of foods they know are bad for them. Those are choices.

There's always a choice, we could only control our own lives. Hey they just maybe be happy with themselves, just the way they are.

My brother in law was really into sports. By "into" he meant lying on the sofa and watching them on TV.

He died a few months ago. Never exercised because he never had time. But he had time to watch a couple of hours of sports every night.

Correct- a lot of people are willfully inactive and purposely eat too much processed/shit food.
I'm not speaking to the reasons for the obesity epidemic here- I'm commenting on things that impact people in their decision making.
Mental health- depression- and stress are clear reasons why some people can't get past their poor physical shape and succumb to poor eating habits and a general unhealthier lifestyle. Same reasons why people smoke and can't get past that either. They definitely know better- but it's just not that easy for many to drop the stick.
I went cold turkey 14 years ago. After 10 years of virtually zero issues, a series of very unfortunate events "pushed" me back into the habit. Took me 2 years to again drop it. I've been clean since and never looked back.
I like to think I have strong will-power when it comes to making better choices.
Many are not as well equipped.

A suggestion for people like myself who feel going to a gym daily or several days a week is not for them, try Geocaching, I have been doing it for many years....I have choosen to do the hunts that require walking through trails and to the top of hills, small mountains.....the thrill of the find mixed with being out and enjoying the fresh / vancouver air is incredible, I will also point out Geocaching is world wide so on all vacations we always spend a few hours hunting these treasures that require some effort...don't do the drive up ones.....at 61 and 240 I have no problems walking up hills including a recent trip to hawaii where we quickly went up the trail to the cone edge of Diamond head.....good enough for me

The comments seem to have taken a left turn. I wasn't suggesting people had to have daily fitness regimes, hit the gym regularly or live on kale and spring water.

My original post was about how I don't understand how some men get such enormous guts, who look otherwise thin (legs/arms). Simple common sense says just being somewhat active every day (Take the stairs to the office, park wherever it's easiest and walk, go for a stroll now and then looking at hot women, or - as above - geocaching) and making common sense food choices (Don't eat hamburgers every day, have a salad once in a while, drink water instead of sugar-laden soda, have some fruit instead of a donut).

Nobody has to be a triathlete. Gaining some weight is normal as we age, but why let things get out of hand? I suppose there's some turning point where people just give up trying when they're obese, but they also still had a chance along the line to do something before it got that far.

I'm no expert, but IMO, I think a portion of this has to do with the persons metabolism and predisposition to weight.
I for one struggle, but on the opposite end.
I can eat crap, or eat healthy, or drink too much, or abstain, and my weight hovers around 170.
I do walk a lot, moderate exercise...
I have TRIED to gain weight at times, eat plenty of proper calories, worked out properly trying to add mass, but to no avail.
So, if I have this problem, I am sure others have the reverse problem where it is difficult for them to lose weight, even doing all the right things.
However, I do notice if I stop my walking ( for other health reasons), I do get a bit of a belly, but that is more my by back issues.

Another thing I have read, is in different cultures there are differences in what is a an appropriate body shape.
It wasn't long ago, that a larger plump body was considered to be desirable, as it showed you had enough $ to enjoy food, and hired people to do your work. On the flip side, the lean muscular bodies were considered undesirable as those were for the "workers".

Another thing I find odd, is at 5-10 and 170, some charts peg me as over weight. or at least on the high end of the scale. Here is my report from online. "Normal weight range for the height: 128.9 - 174.2 lbs."
I would be a skeleton if I were 128.9 pounds.

I'm an older chap who up until recently did carry a bit of extra weight around my midsection. I trimmed down after getting a dog a couple years ago...I walk him twice a day, and I cut down on drinking.

A man with a huge belly got on a bus. It was standing room only, and he was directly in front of a seated woman. Every time the bus moved, his belly hit the woman in the face. She was disgusted by this, and finally said, "If your belly were on a woman, she'd be pregnant".

The man replied, "Lady, it was, and she is".

Nice one!

On a different tack has anyone seen the "Jacques Peretti Investigates" show on TV. It is also on youtube I think. It is definitely food for thought.
