correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't 18 legal age of consent?
criminal code of canada subsection 212(4) (obtaining prostitution of person under age of 18)

yeah, thats young, but what's the issue if she's advertising she's 19
From the DOJ website:

What is Canada's age of consent?

The age of consent for sexual activity is 16 years. It was raised from 14 years on May 1, 2008 by the Tackling Violent Crime Act.

However, the age of consent is 18 years where the sexual activity "exploits" the young person -- when it involves prostitution, pornography or occurs in a relationship of authority, trust or dependency (e.g., with a teacher, coach or babysitter). Sexual activity can also be considered exploitative based on the nature and circumstances of the relationship, e.g., the young person's age, the age difference between the young person and their partner, how the relationship developed (quickly, secretly, or over the Internet) and how the partner may have controlled or influenced the young person.

I am sure the OP has the best intentions at heart but like you I don't see what the problem is...

Because usually at their age in this industry they are being victimized .. a 19 year old just decides to wake up one day and become an escort? Someone obviously influenced her.

I tell you what, when I was 16 and went out on the street for the first time, I wish someone would've came a long and gave me a good talking to, but nobody did and we certainly didn't have the resources we do now to help young girls.

What were you doing at 19? How much common sense and real life experience did you have at that age?

Sure it's her body, but we don't know IF she's 19.
Idk why they choose to ignore my comment on contacting susie.. I guess they do not realize she has close ties to VPD and can belp get things done privately and quickly. *confused *

You are 100% correct; we had this debate last year, I believe.

susie has already posted in this thread:

her email has ("94) in it....could be she's just of age. i tried to call but no answer. 19/ 20 year olds all look really young to me cuz i am old biotch!!lol

i will continue to try to contact her and check her ID or something. we have done this before when new/ young looking girls show up in the ads.

for discussions sake, it is illegal to not report a youth at risk as far as i know.....norm is right that we shouldn't assume she is pimped and maybe doing it of her own free will, but if she is underage there are laws against older men (more than 5 years older) having sex with her.

we may not agree with the law but that is the law. so i would caution people until we determine if she is of legal age to consent.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is this applies to situations where someone of the age of consent (16) has consensual sex.

Where prostitution (and certain other situations) is involved, my understanding is that age 18 is a hard cutoff. Under 18 - illegal, 18 and over - legal.

According to wikipedia:

In June 2006, the Canadian government proposed a bill to raise the age of consent from 14 to 16, while creating a close-in-age exemption for sex between 14-15 year olds and partners up to 5 years older, and keeping an existing close-in-age clause for sex between 12-13 year olds and partners up to 2 years older

Ok guys back again to this question if it was your daughter and she was POSSIBLY under age working as an escort, wouldn't you like someone to do something about it?

It's not like ID checks are done on all these sites or anything and this is why the police and media and lord knows the left and right wing christians get sites shut down, because once a minor is up there and being exploited .. all hell breaks loose and then we lose more places to advertise. So it's best for the community as a whole to make sure that she IS of AGE and NOT being exploited.

And IF she is of age, we can point her to some resources to help her keep safe.

this.

to address your previous comment,
as purveyors of the ads, I don't think the onus is on us to verify the age just because she's young looking. there are plenty of women are look younger than they actually are.

I could understand reporting the ad if she mistakingly put down clues in her ad suggesting she was underage (I only saw the ad briefly and said she was 19) but I don't see how this applies because she merely appears to be young.

would we even be having this conversation if she had took the time to crop her face from the photos?

I doubt they're fake pics, maybe bait and switch, but they seem normal of a girl her age. If she wasn't posting avg looking pics (and I don't mean her appearance, she is a cute girl), then I'd call fake on them.

@the Meat Market!!!lol
Good point, assuming she's not 17, as she looks to me.
But then Susi did mention something about a 5 years age difference.

Susi?
you must be 19 to work as an escort in vancouver, by-law states so.....

from the look of the 18 being the consent age i would say yes that's right and before that you have to be within 5 years of each other.

the other issue is that a person under 19 cannot legally enter into a contract in bc. this is why the escort age is 19 in the city by-law. technically each transaction we have whether indy or not, with a client is a contract.

i tried to lower the age to 18 as per direction from the community of sex workers but couldn't because of the provincial regulations. our rational is that we want them to be safe, they will do it anyway so let's protect them. they can vote at 18, so why not escort?

its a point of contention amongst escorts. some say 24 should be the minimum age.

we have taken action and will need to see her ID within 24 hrs or her ads will be removed and i will report to police as well. i also doubt its a fake picture. i think she's of age though. she just looks young. its like the exotic dancers. many of them are very petite, small and look younger than their age...

Your comment refers to consensual unpaid sex.

In B.C., Paid sex with an under 19 girl is legally child abuse with associated criminal charges.

There is an ad on ers with a picture of someone who seems to me to be underaged and the phrase "Newly 19" which might be a code that actually implies underage. This could be a real ad or it could be a sting of some kind.

I sent a PM yesterday to the erslist account on perb but haven`t received a reply yet.

Based on their FAQ, erslist likely won`t address this unless someone reports this:

So at this point, I need to contact the police/RCMP. Anyone know who I should contact? I`m not going to phone them, it has to be something computer-based, email, web etc.
I would then like to thank you for bringing this topic up for discussion, Ratbert.

We had a similar discussion here as well (similar = under age "forced" workers in Canada.)

Looks like her pimp or friend or she knows the laws.

I found an ad from her in another Canadian city, saying she had just turned 18 on January......2013. So, for the guys that saw her. I'd be looking out.

Thanks Susie for updating perb.
She has till 4pm Saturday to get back to us with proof of age by providing government issued photo-id, otherwise we will take appropriate action at that point.

If it were me, I'd remove the ad's temporarily until proof is given. I mean, letting it stay up until 4pm, especially with this thread garnering a lot of attention for her, might not be the most prudent thing to do.

Especially if one of her other ads in another Canadian city stated she turned 18 this year.

I think this thread also raises another issue. I know Nik is busy with the new revamped site and tinkering with the bugs, as such, Erslist may not be able to answer such "flags" in time.

No offense to Nik, but I wonder if the action being taken now wasn't sped up due to the discussion happening here/susi.

On a side note, Thanks Susi for the information.
I swear, I read into this as well and thought the legal age for escorting was 18. I've seen numerous ads with "18" and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted but figured it just wasn't worth the trouble if she was younger.

Heck, there was a girl this spring, escorting in Delta and advertised on Erslist as 18. Nothing happened with her ads, and even a couple perb members saw her. More tried to, but she was a flake.
