Tiger is Big Jim Walker of 42nd Street? And Y.E. is Willie McCoy?

You don't tug on superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that old lone ranger
And you don't mess around with jim

Having watched the final round from start to finish, the idea of "kissing his ass" is hardly true.

When Yang sunk that eagle chip on 14, the commentary was elated.

Down the stretch, certainly they did talk about how Tiger still had a chance - because he did. Yang's much too short 3rd shot on 16, coupled with a ten foot birdie chance for Tiger, was a major opportunity. Ditto the 17th hole, where Yang opened up the door again. The 18th hole was similar - when Yang stuck that unbelievable approach shot, and every point thereafter, the CBS announcers were all over him with praise.

Woods missed a lot of chances today - lesser guys like Mickelson, etc. would have been called "chokers" for carding a 75 in the final round with the lead going in.

But I've never quite understood peoples' need to heap scorn Tiger Woods' way on the few times he comes up short.

Exactly. It's a sad existence when you want to see someone fail just so you can feel a littl better about your own pathetic existence  Tiger is the best and has brought a whole different genre of people into the fold of golf. He made it cool to be a fan and a player of the game. The man is magic with his clubs and amazingly consistent in his play. He is humble, a gentleman and does so much for various charities, while at the same time, intense and passionate about the game. Trash talk and wishing il-will toward him is just pathetic.

The Golf Channel pre dated Tiger Woods' popularity.

It's obvious that every golf broadcast, magazine and radio show knows they need to kiss Tiger's ass for two reasons. A large majority of golf viewers only watch to see Tiger. If he is not in contention or isn't on the screen every minute or so they find something else to watch. The other reason is, he is a Dick. If you say or do the wrong thing he'll freze you ot like he did Fluff Walden and Butch Harmon.

The boys at CBS are the biggest Tiger whores in the world. As much as I love Faldo, Mchord and Fehrety they are there for one reason. To make people tune in and see the greatest human in the world ply his trade. The thing is there are lots of other great players in the world, but because they aren't Jesus with a Swoosh on their bag, hat, shirt and shoes we rarely ever see or hear of them. Look at that shot Harrinton made out of the bunker on Friday it was otherworldly. Did anyone see it? Probably not. But if Tiger had done it My God it would have led the evening news on CBS.

For years all we heard was look at how far Tiger hits the ball, he is the longest ever. Now Harrington blows it by him and Yang was at least as long and nobody ever mentions it.

All this being said he is a great golfer and athlete, he has taken the game's popularity to heights nobody could have predicted. He has been and will be the dominate golfer in the world. He is also moody, a poor sport, egotistical and seems to mouth Fuck evertime he hits a poor shot (so do I).

YE Yang seems to be the shit though. What a second shot on 18! The CBS crew were saying the folks in Korea were probably going crazy. Yeah probably not Woods is the biggest golfer in Korea. Most were probably cheering for him.

True, but it was an extreme niche market, made up mostly of lame 'lesson' shows and early versions of infomercials.

The other reason is, he is a Dick. If you say or do the wrong thing he'll freze you ot like he did Fluff Walden and Butch Harmon.
Two sides to those stories. Tiger has a good reputation on tour as a professional, a decent guy, and someone who is great to play with. This is confirmed by a friend of mine who has covered three Masters tournaments and two US Opens. He says you ask around and the consensus on Tiger is almost unanimously positive.

You know who isn't very popular among his peers? Phil Mickelson. Phil has a nickname, among golf writers, and fellow players. It's "FIGJAM". Look it up.

Stephen Ames played a charity game with another friend of mine in Ontario. He hits this six iron stiff to about 15 feet. My buddy says "good shot". His reply? "Maybe for you", and keeps walking. Now THERE'S a dick.

There's a lot of reputed 'dicks' on tour - but you don't often hear Tiger's name among them.

Ratings skyrocket when he's in contention. When he's not, they plummet. Do the math. BTW, they re-played Harrington's amazing 3-wood about a dozen times before ending coverage for the day. Golf Channel ditto.

I watched yesterday's round wire to wire - and there were stretches where you didn't see any Tiger at all. They also did a great job talking up Yang's previous successes - which included an Asian Tour event where Yang beat Tiger. They had quite a few closeup analyses of Yang's swing and ball contact as well. Just like they did the other day with Padraig. Just like any other telecast.

For years all we heard was look at how far Tiger hits the ball, he is the longest ever. Now Harrington blows it by him and Yang was at least as long and nobody ever mentions it.
Um, yeah. Harrington wasn't "blowing it by him". What the hell were you watching? Tiger is 26th on tour in driving distance. Harrington is below the tour average. 'Nuff said. Yang was about as far as Tiger a couple times - because Yang hit Driver and Woods hit a 3-wood. Or Yang hit driver and Woods hit a 3-Iron. Duh.

It wasn't just Tiger's distance that made him a star - it was the seemingly unlimited bag of shots he could execute on command - sweeping draws and fades of varying degrees, the 'stinger' shots, and what has become the undisputed best short game and recovery game ever.

I don't worship at the altar of Tiger, and he's far from perfect (as quite evidenced sunday :p), but he also is in a fishbowl under a microscope each and every time he plays. Those reactions after bad shots happen all the time, with lots of players. But the cameras not always on them.

Criticize him, sure - but a lot of what you said has no basis in fact.

No basis in fact? You say he's a great guy because you may know someone who went to the Masters? I say he's a dick because of what I see with my own eyes. He throws clubs, yells the F word and has even brutalised a green during the US Open a few years ago when he missed a putt. He didn't even make an attempt to fix it, just walked to the other hole.

At the Bridgestone last week and this week at the PGA Harrington was routinely hitting it well past him driver for driver. That's a fact. Driving distance stats only measure on a couple of holes per round. When Harrington plays second and has 20 yards less to the green after they both hit driver I can only draw one conclusion, he hit it further.

I did the math and my conclusion is so what. Ratings are huge when Faldo and Nance are worshipping Tiger. That doesn't make it good television or good for the sport. The NBA had a huge problem when they couldn't talk about Jordan all the time. When he left the void took years to fill. The sign at the golden arches says Billions served, does that mean its good? Brittney Spears sells billions of downloads does that make her talented? Just because something sells I just wish that all 3 of the networks would spend more time on other players.

For the record, asshole, "someone" is a veteran sportswriter who covered five major tournaments for Sports Illustrated, the New York Times, and is now on the sports editorial board for the Globe and Mail. He covered five majors, which involved interviewing all the players, and talking extensively to people at the tournaments. He's been covering golf for 25 years.

Disagree if you want, but go fuck yourself if you're going to question the integrity of my friend - whose opinion has a lot more logic, weight, and context than yours. He has a lot more knowledge, and expertise than you or me.

I repeat - it's common knowledge that there's lots of players that hit it long now - even when Tiger was an up and comer, guys like Duval, Davis Love, Ernie Els were also hitting huge off the tee. It's Tiger's ability to create shots that has resulted in his fame more than just length - eg. ability to hit mid and short irons from 200 yds, with a higher ball flight, and better chance to hit close to the pin. If you want length, just watch Quiros - too bad the guy can't putt yet.

I don't believe Woods is perfect, and there's been more than a little talk about his outbursts, all of it justified. I prefer to see the large picture, which by all accounts, have him far from being "a dick".

It's clear you just hate the guy - fine, it's a free country. But you made a lot of sweeping generalizations which just aren't true - or lack context. Take a breath, sparky.

Forgive me for not believing you have a friend who covered the Masters. What you are saying is totally hear say. I know a guy who says he is a nice guy. Come on. I have heard John Fienstien many times call Woods' behaiviour into question both in print and on the radio. This to me carries a bit more wieght then your second hand comments from some one who may be your friend.

The other thing is, everyone wants to be his friend and say nice things about him because he makes them money. I would do the same if it meant my job. I find it hard to believe that people buy into the Tiger hype as much as some of you do. I suppose the Jonas Brothers are great too.

Tiger Woods may be the greatest golfer ever but there are a lot of other great golfers past and present. I read an article once that made a pretty good case for Tom Watson being the greatest ever because for a five year or so period he dominated golf when Nickalus, Trevino, Wieskopf, Floyd, and a couple of other greats were in their prime. It would be silly for me to argue that Wodds isn't the greatest or at worst the second greatest player ever but he still has some work to do to get to 19 majors. I don't know if your friend told you this but Nicklaus was second in 21 majors, so thats in contention to win 38 majors.

My other problem with Woods is his semming disrespect for the PGA Tour. He doesn't seem to realise what his attendance at some of the lesser events could do for the game. If he had come to Northview the year the NEC was at Sahallee it may have saved the tournament. Payne Stewart knew how important it was to paly in these events, as does Vijay Singh. True golf fans here in Vancouver will always respect that.

BTW. I didn't disrespect the opinion of your friend. Forgive me for questioning this "fact" just because you said it. I just need a little more then "I know a guy" information. Also I don't think people who disagree with me are assholes and I don't think they need to fuck themselves. If it works for you then go with it.

Agreed

When anyone says anything uncomplimemtary Tiger has to take it personal

What an ego

Have followed him around a few times and when he hits a bad shot he gets mad and pouts and says fuck all the time

He is not the longest by any means

The press builds him up because he is their money man

Even Johnny Miller will put down anyone except Tiger

But he works very hard and is in fantastic shape

YE Yang shot on 18 was lucky

He could not see the green

Why are lucky shots called great ?

What's with Tiger spitting all over the course? Hard to say if he does it more than others or he has more exposure so it is seen more but I see him do it a lot.

What's with all you weenies and your expectations of people? Tiger is by far the best in golf and by far the best ever. There is no debate when it comes to this, even the greats admitt it (Jack, Arnold etc)
As for Tiger swearing, spitting etc.....get over it. He's a competitor like no other and he's out there to win. He has a camera on him every second for one reason, people wanna watch him. If he isn't in a tourny, no one watches and that's a fact.

Guess what I'm saying is, stop bitching and enjoy watching the best player of all time. If you don't like him that's fine, I don't think he really gives a sh*t ;)

As for the "he's not the longest hitter on tour"......last I heard it wasn't a long drive contest.
HH, Tiger just spit through the window and onto the drivers seat of your Le Car, do you feel honored?;)
