I have been reading about the "Nordic Law" and I have to say I have a lot of mixed feeling about it all but I saw one woman's comment about it and I felt compelled to share it with you because I couldn't have said it any better:

Elizabeth N :KITCHENER, CANADA

We, as consenting adults, should have the right to choose who we see and what we do in the sex industry either as an escort or as a hobbyist.
As an escort we already have to deal with many issues just from the stigma that the majority of society puts on us. We are considered less, we are thought of as dirty, we are blamed for marriages and relationships that fail, we are thought of as drug addicts, we are told that we are escorts because there is no other choice and people believe that we are damaged in one form or another. Yes there are some out there that do fall into one of those categories yet many of us aren't. Many of us are parents, business women, students, wives, girlfriends, sisters and daughters. We may be the lady you smile at while waiting for the bus, the lady you chat to while getting your hair cut, the lady you laugh with while at the theatre. We can be any lady on the street and yet you don't know because we are just like every other woman.

Allow us to decide what we do with our bodies, allow us the dignity to be who we are and not have to hide because of fear of being arrested or hurt. You are trying to dictate to us what we can and cannot do with our bodies, you are trying to tell people that sex is disgusting and dirty. By allowing a law that makes it illegal for a hobbyist to contact us makes the government no better than the pimps we try to avoid. You are trying to tell us that we cannot do this when it is OUR own bodies. The most dangerous part of our job isn't the people we see as clients but the people who believe we need to be stopped, because the ones who believe we need to be stopped are the ones who don't care who gets hurt in the long run. Legalize it and when you legalize it our lives will be safer and hopefully society will begin to see us for who we are and not what we are.

I'm an escort and I hold my head high in pride.

CBC radio just had a decent discussion, ending with a law professor's recommendation of the New Zealand model. You can listen to it from a link on this page, and vote for their options. The vote options do not make clear the difference between "Legalize prostitution" and "Decriminalize prostitution", which the federal government could do best by doing nothing. There is no need for a law of any kind.

Excellent discussion from the law professor on Day 6 about how the Canadian government needs to move away from criminal law and regulating everything in sight to making better use of municipal zoning and licensing.
