Firstly, I am glad Obama won. I would have taken him over the Republicans any day and he is an intelligent guy. But he is not the change guy.

But a few years from now, the love affair is going to be over and you'll see few changes. Sure some minor ones.

US will be mostly out of Iraq, they will still have a small military presence their guarding their base (they aren't going to leave their base un guarded).

And almost all the troops will be slowly re-delployed to Afghanistan. That will be the new war. And he will be pushing Canada to stay there.

There will be no real change, especially the change people expected that jumped on his bandwagon. You'll still see America run the same way, which is Corporate influence by the donations they make to Congressmen and Senators. Therefore, America will be for the special interests and corporate interests like they all been.

Obama for change - you are fooling yourself.

i agree with you there will be very little change. Still nice for the blacks in the states to have a african american as president. Glad Bush wont be back whew. I also heard on cnn with Obama as president they'd likely host the olympics in chicago. But with Mcain in office that wont happen cause something about IOC or whoever not liking him

Anyone who did try to rock the boat too much would get shut out by Congress, so I agree.

This is what I would expect:
I think he will repair international relationships, at least with America's allies and neutrals. I doubt that he'll magically turn enemies into friends.
Ease up on the rule-by-fear method that Bush has been riding for years. Of course, this assumes that there will be no 9/11 repeat.
He will modify/retire the Bush education plan (No-Child-Left-Behind)
He will pass his tax plan.

In short, I am expecting that he will spend most of his time undoing the damage that Bush did.
Also, he has already had an impact on race relations in the US, just by winning the election. No small feat.

However, the American people have to learn (as do Canadians) that they can't depend on <i>any</i> politicians to create change - they have to join in to make the efforts themselves. We have a culture that believes they have a sense of entitlement to overspend and overeat - then expect leaders and doctors to bail them when things go bad. If real change is to take place, then change has to come from within... everyone has a shared responsiblity.

Bigben, I totally agree. I think u guys are right in terms of what is going to happen but I think HOW he's going to do it is going to be different. I'm guessing, but think he will make more of an effort to have people more involved, more "in the loop" and almost, consult with the citizens of the US in addition to his cabinet, senate, etc. ...oh and Jack Bauer would probably save his life at least twice.

VERY well said! Canadians are the most guilty of being too lazy to exact any kind of social change. The worst that we do is complain on boards such as this. Raise gas prices? Bitch, but do little else. Increased poverty level or drug use? Bitch on the board. Raising taxes or adding new ones? Bitch on the board. Remember when they raised the taxes in the UK and the people had a problem with it? They rioted in the streets because they would not take it anymore. In Canada? Bitch on the board. People make the big changes, not just a leader. Yet still, I just bitch on the board :rolleyes:

yea there's going to be a huge disappointment in the internet community that really strongly wanted Obama. They seem to be expecting huge change but don't realize this sort of stuff doesn't happen over night.

Just hope for smart decisions and strong/believable leadership.

he'll have to do something to somewhat fix the u.s. economy in the next four years, if he ever wants to make it to a second term. it's simple as that.

he won't be able to coast into the next term like "dubya" did. plus, the gop will be grooming someone within the next two years that can take on obama head on in 2012.

I agree with you Fudd. The future is full of opstimism with Obama in the Oval office but we need to see him in action before we make our final decision. But you can tell he's a man of great integrity and wisdom. Certainly very charismatic.

But as for going in Afghanistan, what do you think Obama is going to do? He's going to pull most of his troops out of Iraq and re-deploy them to Afghanistan. I don't agree with you that it is a crime against the Afghanies. The Taliban was a crime against the Afghanies. The change there is going to be slow but it's much better than it was pre-2001.

I hate to say I agree with Fudd, but I do at least on the short term.
If the American economy was strong and Obama was going to be able to make the changes he wants to make in the first term things could stay positive for America. But it isn't and in order to fix it he will have to look inward a lot more, which will at the expense of the countries and people that now think of him as the next best thing to sliced bread. Watch how attitudes abroad change when that starts to happen.

I don't think it will really matter who's in charge

I'd have to agree with the original poster. The sad part of it is, that while politicians actually have little power to change things for the better, they have an almost infinite ability to make things worse.
