...and toss my hands in the air, kick a defenseless puppy, cross the street slowly, and otherwise exhibit irrational signs of frustration.

I will appeal to the general wisdom and worldliness of the contributing members & visitors of this fine board known as perb...in my quest....for...a freaking cutting board type counter top. How hard can that be to find???

I need a 24" x 72" cutting board counter top to sit on this island dealy that I made to divide the kitchen from the eating area...I have it designed so that a few stools can be arrayed on either side and I can chop/slice/dice and otherwise mutilate various foodstuffs on the rare occasions that I entertain.

So....where do I find one??? I have checked at Home Depot (no idea), Totem (good idea!), and Revy (sorry, too busy). I have also checked at Butchers and Packer's Supplies and now I'm just annoyed. I shouldn't have thought this would be a "way out there" sort of request. I even checked the Bargain Finder...nyet.

I have done the ritual search on the internet which leads to some pretty cool places in the States...also, I can make one but, quite frankly, the amount of labour involved in piecing maple together in the fashion I need...I just don't wanna do. I am sure there are factories set up to do this far more efficiently and effectively.

Helppppp...please.

I have an Ikea catalogue in the john....I love Ikea...and, Ikea loves me.

But, they don't have what I need. Thanks for the suggestion though...appreciated.

you may try

a restaurant supply store such as russels food supply. They don't advertise that they are open to the public. but on product like this you should have some good luck or they will point you in the right direction.

Russell Food is no longer listed...did they go tits up? I used to deal with those guys, I'm surprised they are not listed. I dunno....either way, I did the "restaurant supply" section...no dice.

Either way, thanks for that suggestion....I have a feeling I will be disposing of a couple of "portable" dishwashers that have butcher blocks on them and cutting those tops to fit...I am basically cheap. Wait...not basically...I am...cheap. I have to fight not pulling out the twofer coupon when on a date.

awesome help...

...and thank you each and all.

It's kinda cool to know the design I have made will fetch $1,999.00 (on sale!) at choppingblocks...and still land 12" short of where I had planned it.

I will cut, plane, and pin the maple required to make this top and do so gratefully for knowing that "it's not just me, but many, that have wondered why the fuck butcher block tops are so expensive"

Please pardon my language. Or don't, your choice of course.

Another alternative ...

is to phone the local plastics supply houses and they can supply the same plastic chopping block material used in most kitchens and restaurants - and they can supply the required thickness and dimensions (if you can live with a plastic chopping board vs. wood).

Just ask for plastic chopping boards made from durable PEHD (high density polyethylene).

Me too. Russel has H.O. in Vanc and 14 locations across Canada. And you can pay cash in their showrooms for merchandise.

o.k., I don't recall ever saying that I wasn't a dork...

...and I have more proof....I too just typed in Russell Food Equipment and obtained their website without any hesitation....what the frig had I been thinking??? They have a wonderful catalogue online and I checked it thoroughly....

Suffice it to say, that I will be building my own 3" thick block from maple board. As for the "plastic vs. wood" argument and various studies that support one vs. the other....that's sort of like the initial introduction of margarine which prompted huge reaction from the butter industry and a flurry of studies indicating how harmful margarine was. Besides....I just like the look and feel of hardwood vs. plastic for what will basically be a piece of furniture capable of more.

Thanks so VERY much to all of the respondents for the assistance. It has confirmed for me what needs to be done. I just didn't want to get into it, get it done, and then have some fucktard friend of mine say..."Well, why didn't you do X instead of going to all that work?".....There appears to be no magic X.
