Wilde....had a great idea....so I thought I would steal it.

I will lead off:

Why do cauasians get so upset when an Asian driver makes a right hand turn from the left hand lane or changes lanes without any signal?

You would think cauasians would have adapted by now. Are cauasians not capable adapting?

And just to show that I am not one of those whities incapable of adapting I have used the Canadian spelling of the word "cauasians".

It wouldn't be adaptation, it would be regression, to the chaos of Suhkumvit (sp) in Bangkok

My introduction to driving in Asia happened when I first landed in Bali, Indonesia. I was there visiting an Aussi friend who owns a resort on the island. My friend explained the driving laws like this: You are responsible not to hit anything that is in front of you. Whatever is behind you, is responsible nit to hit you. Do not use your mirrors at all as this will confuse you-just do not hit anything in front of you.

The funny thing is that it works (mostly). As long as everyone plays the same game. There are very few accidents between vehicles in traffic.

The other thing my friend explained was this. If there is an accident, whoever has the most money is responsible to pay for everything. If you are a westerner, this is automatically you. When he told me this I decided to use the services of a driver for my time on Bali. Had a great time, even in traffic.

That was one of the observations that one of my friends made while we were in Vietnam. The way that he saw it, it was not unlike skiing where you are responsible to watch for everything that unfolds in front of you and likewise for the people behind you. Everything looked absolutely chaotic; but it worked. And it was also great fun to ride in. :)

Note to self:

Why do German caucasians get so upset at Spanish caucasians while visiting as tourists when a Spaniard double parks his car trapping the German from leaving and forces the German to go find the Spaniard somewhere in the shopping district, when it is customary in Spain to double park anyway? And then why does the Spaniard get super pissed off at the German and calls him all sorts of dirty names sullying his mother and referencing Adolf Hitler and spitting on his shoes? And then why does the German tourist go beat red with anger vying to overrun this little runt and swearing never to visit such an inferior culture again, only to hold back from anything physical because it has drawn the attention of many more Spaniards ready to spark a race war?

Why do caucasians beat on each other? Because there are not many asians around in Europe, that's why!

WTF is a "cauasian"?
I got the spelling from Wilde's post and I was trying to make fun at his expense. Guess it didn't work.

I had a similar experience in China. I was being driven back to the airport on a 2 lane highway. The driver was traveling about 60 MPH and we were coming up on a slow moving truck. The driver never slowed down and just pulled out to pass. There was an on coming car in our lane and there was not enough space for us to pass the truck and get back in.

No one slowed down. The truck pulled over a bit. The on coming car pulled over and my drive straddled the middle of the road.

Me? I shit my pants and needed to change when I reached the airport.

This is considered "normal" driving in much of the world. It's amazing there aren't more massive accidents, but everyone seems to adapt - for the most part. In Turkey I had a car for a month. Their roads are great, but they all drive like maniacs. I drove my very delapidated Fiat very carefully for a while, but eventually started to drive like them. Somehow I survived. Squeezing between trucks and buses on mountain roads is still pretty hairy.
