NFL's Diasastrous Ratings

Billions at stake, and NFL ratings continue to plummet.

Down 8% last year, and the first few weeks this year down an average of about 12%.

Reasons? I think it's a combination of boring games, and highlight packages. Why waste three hours of minimal action, to get one or two highlight plays that will be shown on a - highlight package?

Personally, I'm also sick of showboating after every friggin' play. Hey, brainiac, that tackle you made, or those 12 yeards you gained haven't won the game. Another factor might be the hype the NFL thrives on, has proven to be over-blown for most games.

Probably some Trump spill-over, too and people are sick of politics in sport. Millionaire athletes are as annoying as millionaire actors using their jobs as a platform for their cause. They have every right to do so, but it risks turning fans off.

I still love the NFL. Last Sunday was awesome as 4 games had some sort of walk-off finish in the span of 10 minutes. Perhaps lack of stars is a problem, but overall still a strong product in my mind. As for ratings? They blow hot and cold like a seasonal wind. First week ratings were down 12% due to Hurricane Irma which swept into Florida that Sunday.

While the percentages may be lower, the number of people who watched a game last year is still massive. Nielsen estimates over 200 mln Americans watched a game in 2016. Add the huge fan bases in Canada, Mexico and now the UK and it’s still a massive amount of people relative to any other tv offering. I think the league and the networks will be fine.

it is better then the cfl.
more skill, bigger better faster, the cfl looks like a bunch of high school kids playing around.

but yes I have to agree, I follow my teams, the guys I have in the draft. a group of guys conned me into their draft now for five years.
but to tell you the truth I was loosing interest

like was previously stated, your loosing thirty nothing but you get a first down at the end of the game and you show boat like you won the dam super bowl. I hate all the personalites and the smack talk trash talk, just play the dam game.

the trouble is,
there is a lot of talent out there, but they play like individuals there too worried about there twitter account face book account I guess so many followers and they get paid money,.
so they fucking show boat for their twitter and face book accounts.

good talent great skill but they play like a bunch of spoiled brats.
only a hand full of good teams in my opinion, and its not the talent level, its the attitude

but still the population is huge they have a big Canadian fan base that travel to games. and as well as home fans from say the patriots and green bay, I understand they travel lots. its hard to get tickets at home,
brady commented he was cheered in there last away game, so a lot of fans travel.

to be honest the only way I can watch a game is to tape it and zip through all the bs,
and dam there is a lot of bs.

Fantasy football has had a huge impact on TV ratings. The youngins don't follow "their" team like the boomers did and do. It's about their draft and don't need to spend time watching games. It's more about instant gratification. Much like golf, they don't see it as a good use 3-4 hours.

Gotta disagree with you on this one buddy.
Yes, pound for pound the players in the NFL are better and they do the game day experience/production very well but as for entertainment value and the excitement of the game the CFL kicks the NFL's ass. And there is more than one NFL quarterback who can't make that wide side throw on a 65 yard wide field the way Bo Levi can.
Most NFL games, with the exception of when Aaron Rogers throws one of his Hail Mary's, are over half was through the 4th quarter if one of the teams has a +7 point lead while in the CFL no lead is safe. While the football purists out there may poo-poo a game where you can drive the field with 90 seconds on the clock, I as a fan watching the game love it.
I have numerous friends in the US who I have turned on to the CFL and with ESPN carrying a number of the games or satellite viewing they love it. When the start watching, they are confused and intrigued by some of the quirky rules (the rouge) but that is what makes our game unique. To a person, they admit the game itself is way more entertaining.

I compare it to watching the Blue Jays versus our Winnipeg Goldeyes. Sure the Blue Jays are the big show and if you are the type of person who can only enjoy watching a game with top end talent then that's fine. But for my money, sitting in Shaw Park on a July evening, with a cold beer, watching our independent AA team score 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th to win is just as exciting and entertaining as any BJ's game I've ever been to.

Cheers

There could be a number of factors at play here.

Neilson Ratings are not all eyes on the screen but is a sampling of the demographics watching TV.

It's not perfect but through the years it's been their tool for measuring attendance. Now with many people opting out of traditional cable TV in favour or streaming it has shown lower numbers for football. It's not saying they aren't watching football because they could choose to see a game at a pub instead of via their service.

Also there's been a lot of distractions of late with multiple hurricanes, what the US Senate or Congress are not doing, the Russia probe and the orange haired man-child's school yard bully shit with a 3rd World Dictator.

Personally I'm really enjoying the Monday night games. No dog in the fight of both games and they were really entertaining football.

I doubt the owners are losing sleep over the stats. What's losing a few Mil when you have a few Bil? Meh

Contracts are locked in for now, so you can bet there will be some sleepless nights if the trend continues, and it comes time for re-negotiation.

There is also concern because attendance in stadiums is down, so the trending is all going the wrong way. Football is a religion int he US, the way soccer is in the rest of the world, so it will always dominate the sports world there and be a huge business.

I'll also cast another vote for the CFL. MUch more exciting than most NFL games. And most NFL rejects that come to the CFL quickly find the talent they're up against isn't that shabby.

I find the NFL more entertaining to watch. More downs to get something done than the CFL which always seems to be punting the ball away. I disagree with regards to the NFL talent not cutting it in the CFL. It's the exact opposite. NFL players who can't cut it end up in the CFL and CFL players often don't make it in the NFL. Look at Adam Bighill, stud in the CFL and couldn't make it in the NFL.

The amount of money being thrown at pro athletes is absurd.
Just read in a business report that Under Armour might give someone 120 million over ten years for a line of shoes.
Really.

Turn off the TV and play catch with your kids.
That is real sports.

Got to admit the last Superbowl was epic. When Brady is done and the Pats suck you all will miss them. The league needs teams that people love to dislike.

You do realize this is the big show sportswise in the US.

End of the contract they will get more money from Networks to broadcast because the advertsing alone is where the money is. Same with Super Bowls, every year ad revenue goes up for 30 second spots.

Your argument doesn't bare what corporations will pay regardless if the attendance goes down or the viewership goes down. There is no viable sports competitor vs the NFL for US advertising revenue. Baseball? Basketball? NASCAR? Between August and February the NFL owns the majority of Ad revenue. Maybe when the Cubs won the series; but that's over in about a week.

Didja miss this part? - "Football is a religion in the US, the way soccer is in the rest of the world, so it will always dominate the sports world there and be a huge business."
The money broadcasters hand over to the NFL is ENTIRELY based on how many people tune in - by any media. Fewer eyes = fewer $$$. Advertisers aren't dummies, they pay the big bucks for the big ratings. We've seen adjustments made in the past where promised ratings are not delivered and sponsors re-negotiate. No broadcaster or sponsor will just keep dumping money if they don't feel they are getting a proper return on their investment.

Sports are the only tv shows left that are appointment viewing. That makes it fantastically valuable for networks, far more so than a series that can be pvr’ed. Sports is also a massive way that CBS, FOX and NBC pump their other shows. That is why it’s so bloody valuable, with the NFL being the most valuable of all. So if 190 million people watch the games versus 200 million. Doesn’t matter, numbers still massive.

Of course you can pvr a game. But stats show that most people like to watch the game live. Occasionally I pvr a game and then someone leaks the score or my phone alerts wreck if for me. So in general live sports is still watched by and large the way it was always watched. Yes I know Twitter Facebook stream games but nothing beats a big screen. Also sports is highly social viewing with also adds to the appointment nature of watching the game.

I watch Seahawks games every week with a group of friends and that doesn’t happen with any other program.

okay I get you. you're the genuine sports fan that you must watch it live or not at all (with bros over beers and grub).
I used to view sports that way as well, but not so much nowadays. when I do watch a recorded sports program, I make sure
not to turn on to any sports channel prior to viewing. phone and internet off.

Have to agree 100%. Few leads are safe, usually close games, and some of our rules just make for a better game. Go Bombers!

You asked a question, I gave my opinion on it. No beers, no bros, just watching the game with friends male and female. Not sure why the response above. Sheesh!
