Of course there are no limits on your freedom of speech. Why not test it? Next time you are at the airport, I recommend you make a joke about having a bomb. They will find it amusing and have a good laugh.

....or find a group of young men of a different ethnic group and try out some friendly racial epithets. They will certainly not mind, since this is free country.
This is not what most people mean when they are talking about freedom of speech. Thats just being stupid. Freedom of speech would be my right to say that Pres. Bush is a liar or that the Conservative party is full of right wing idiots. In many countries in the world you would not dare to say something like that about a political party or your President.

When I think of free speech I certainly don't associate it with plagerism or copyright infringement. Sued for libel. Yeah if you believe in something strong enough then you should be able to say what you believe even if you get sued. (remember the reporter that was sued in the 50's or 60's for saying Liberace was gay. Liberace won but years later his house boy sued for spousal support and Liberace died of AIDS. I wonder if the reporter got his money back)

Sidewinder how about this for a quote:
"Goebbels was in favor of free speech for views he liked. So was Stalin. If you're in favor of free speech, then you're in favor of freedom of speech precisely for views you despise. Otherwise, you're not in favor of free speech." Noam Chomsky, Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media (1992).

Actually...I think he GOT the point completely because he is saying if you really believe, and would "fight to the death" then don't hide behind a keyboard but put yourself 'out' there and exercise your freedom of speech.
I did exercise my freedom of speech a lot in the 60's and spent time in jail for doing it. I moved to Canada in the early 70's to avoid the draft.

Good for you. I'm guessing that's why HankQuinlan's post and my post was not directed at you :)

Well perhaps he was exercising his right to freedom of speech which you appear to feel he (and I) has a right to :)

Yes, it was directed at you --- you asked "Are there limits on freedom of speech?" I am saying there are plenty. You can't yell "Fire" in a crowded theatre, or "Bomb!" in a public place. You can't disseminate hatred towards another ethnic group or publish materials advocating racism, because it is against the law. You can't publish child pornography, because it is a heinous crime, and society agrees that it is wrong. If you are writing in a CanWest newspaper, you can't disagree with Israel's policies -- it is owned by those who won't allow it. If you are writing on this board, you can't make dumbass/ignorant comments about the ladies who provide services (not you, but the banned shit-disturber whose views you were defending). Why? Because it is a privately owned board, and it is against the rules.

When the First amendment to the constitution was written I don't think they had in mind someone yelling fire in a theatre as being protected by the amendment or to advocate hatred against a ethnic group as being protected. It wasn't meant to protect against stupidity. Just as the Second Amendment was not meant to allow people to have fully armed tanks in their back yards. You can always push anything to the extreme but it doesn't change the "true"
meaning behind the amendment.

You're in Canada now Me too. In case you haven't already noticed, there are a couple of key differences between us and the Stars and Bars. But even with the 1st amendment - the right to free speech, folks in the US sex entertainment trades had a heckuva time of it during the Nixon era. Rent yourself a copy of the video "The making of the movie DEEP THROAT" and you'll see what I mean. And if you want to rent the original movie DEEP THROAT, there's one copy that i know of available for rent at HOLLYWOOD VIDEO on yates St. Highly educational.

Meanwhile, here is yet another constraint on absolute free speech: Criminal fraud and misrepresentation. Bottom line, is that if you harm someone using free expression, odds are that there's some kind of legislation remedying the harm.

And to respond to one of Quinlan's points, I've seen all kinds of things critical of Israel in Canwest media. Just that I don't think they run a number of the the kinds of stories that say, Al Jazzera does. For instance they don't refer to suicide/homicide bombers who blow up buses, pizza parlors, and day care centres as "militants." They generally refer to them as terrorists. I'm good with that.

If you could find me a quote of anything substantial that is critical of Israeli policies in CanWest media, I will consider myself wrong --- I just know I have never noticed anything in the Victoria or Vancouver papers.

Sorry, but being originally from the other side of the border I was thinking of the US constitution.

It's interesting though what the Canadian charter of rights does say about freedom of speech: " freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;"

The US amendment spells it out a little better as the Canadian charter never says that we have freedom of speech.

Also the second amendment is the right to bear arms, which is something that I don't think is in the charter.

How in hell can you talk about defending any rights, when you ran off to Canada to avoid a war about freedom.
Sounds to me like you found an excuse to justify being a coward.

Vietnam certainly wasn't about freedom and if you want to call me a coward for not fighting in a illegal war then go for it. Fill your boots, i've been called worse by better men then you.

I know 60,000 other people that would call you a coward too, if they were alive to do so.
Some of them did not agree on the reasons why they were there, but when the country asked them to go, they didn't run off. Like I said, you found a reason to justify being a coward. Nothing wrong with being a coward. I just would not want you covering my back anywhere but a PTA tea.
