If I'm not mistaken, XP only can reconize a 500gig HD.
With Vista, your good to go.
Check the specs on your machine as well.
Really? Does that go for externals too? Dang, I came this close to going out and buying a 1 TB drive earlier today... The only thing that stopped me was the fact that I didn't feel like leaving the house. Now I'm glad I didn't and I read this thread instead!

Windows XP pre SP 1 has issue's with large drives, the limit being 128 GB partitions. If you have SP1 or later you will be fine. But you will not be able to install XP on partitions larger than 128 GB, it's a feature  .

Ah, OK, I should be fine then. Thanks!

I suggest the following drives & NCIX is a good place to find them:

I have this one: (it's a gaming performance drive)
Western Digital Raptor 150GB Sata Ncq 10000RPM 5.5MS 16MB Cache
http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=15080DR2525&vpn=WD1500ADFD&manufacture=WESTERN DIGITAL

Western Digital WD10EADS Caviar Green 1TB SATA 32MB Cache
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=35676&vpn=WD10EADS&manufacture=Western Digital WD

If your computer motherboard supports SATA2 (I think SATA & SATA2 are interchangeable?):

Western Digital Caviar SE16 640GB SATA2 7200RPM 16MB
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=30004&vpn=WD6400AAKS&manufacture=Western Digital WD

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 750GB SATA2 7200RPM 32MB Cache NCQ
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=27264&vpn=ST3750330AS&manufacture=Seagate

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1000GB 1TB SATA2 7200RPM 32MB Cache NCQ
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=26387&vpn=ST31000340AS&manufacture=Seagate

Hitachi Deskstar P7K500 500GB SATA2 7200RPM 16MB
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=27146&vpn=0A35415&manufacture=Hitachi

Samsung Spinpoint F1 Series HD753LJ 750GB SATA2 7200RPM 8.9MS 32MB
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=28170&vpn=HD753LJ&manufacture=Samsung SSI

Samsung Spinpoint F1 Series HD103UJ 1TB SATA2 7200RPM 8.9MS 32MB
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=28171&vpn=HD103UJ&manufacture=Samsung SSI

The more cache you have on the drive typically, the faster access times you will get.
ie. 32MB better than 16MB

:)

Ditto on Krustee's suggestions.
I suggest you go with the Seagate 1 Tb Drive. Seagate offers a longer standard warranty than other companies (5 years vs 3 years).

I also suggest NCIX - just keep in mind they are extremely busy right now with boxing week order filling so if you need it right away, make sure they have it in stock.

NCIX has good prices especially on their weekly sales; starts every wednesday or try Anitec too. As for brand, go with tried and true western digital or seagate cause there is still some reliablity issues with samsung drives even enough the F1 drives are pretty damn fast.

I think XP has a limit of 4TB, though I have not tried partitions larger myself. I am currently running 2 x 1 TB drives on my XP Pro SP2 machine and have had no problems whatsoever.

My favourite place for online shopping (provided they have it in stock) is Direct Canada, www.directcanada.com

Is anybody here aware of reliability problems with USB thumb drives and USB external drives. I've had one each fail without any idea of what went wrong.

I have used an old tower set up as a NAS (Network Attached Storage) and this seems to be solid (running one year continuously)

XP has a limit of 2TB for a single basic volume, 64TB for a RAID 0 array and 62TB for a RAID 5 array using dynamic volume (2TB *32 disks).

Actually the Hitachi is getting some really good feedback these days too.

Samsung is new but making some big waves in the biz as well.

I plan on owning one of these two for my next drive. (probably the Samsung)
