It is reported today that Naslund will retire and will walk away from the final year of his contract with the Rangers. He had 24 goals and 46 points in the regular season and was a minus 10. Don't think Tortella had any future plans for him and Rangers would probably buy out his contract.

But should Vancouver retire his Jersey Number?

NO!!!!... There are far more worthy players who have played for the Canucks. Naslund was a great player for them, but not worthy of retiring his jersey.

On a side note I was happy the Rangers were eliminated, especially with Tort's as coach.

Uhh... Trevor Linden (16) and Stan Smyl (12)... And your point would be?
I'm not sure what his point was, but I'm with you on this. Naslund was really good for the team, but as far as I'm concerned his contributions to the Canucks don't come close to those of Linden and Smyl.

Should have traded him to Montreal for a bagel while we had the chance. But to make it fair for all, a day old bagel.

I thought there were 3 retired Canuck jerseys?

I know that the team has slim pickings for jersey retirement, but what about Bure? Didn't he lead them to their 2nd almost-a-Stanley-Cup?

note: I post tongue-in-cheek from a city where they seem to be doing jersey retirements for every Oiler that's won a Cup. Who's next, Dave Semenko? Willy Lindstrom? Moe Lemay?

If and when the Vancouver Canucks ever have a dynasty, they'll regret retiring the jersey of any player who's not in the Hall of Fame.

Based on how uncomfortable it is in Edmonton seeing Al Hamilton's jersey in rafters next to Gretzky and Messier, etc., I think the Canucks should retire Linden and maybe Bure and that's it. I'm a little too young and maybe too far removed from Vancouver to fully appreciate what Stan Smyl did for the Canucks, but I'm guessing he's like our Al Hamilton. I'm sure he was a blood-and-guts guy who was loved by all and would block a shot with his face for the team, but face it, aren't there a lot of those guys in the NHL? I think the criteria for having your jersey retired is minimum (1) Hockey Hall of Fame and one of the following two: (2) loved by the community or (3) won a Stanley Cup.

Vote "no" Canucks fans! This is like marrying the first girl you meet lol. You need higher standards!

if you can retire Linden's jersey, you can retire anybody's jersey...

perhaps the single most overrated player in the history game...

thick as a ball-peen hammer...

smarmy and cloying to boot...

a real Peter Pan...

does anybody remember Wayne Maki...

they retired his number "unofficially"...

they than unretired it as an ass kissing gesture when they signed Messier...

so much for class and dignity...

Naslund - All Time Canucks Leader in Points and Goals

Good luck with your campaign but you will need to lick his balls when you lose as he will be honored. Although he did not play the same style as Linden or Smyl - Naslund did play 884 regular-season games with the Canucks and is the franchise's all-time leader in goals (346) and points (756). He was team captain from 2000-2008. He was NHL First Team All-Star for 2002, 2003 and 2004. He was also voted by the NHL Players as the Most Outstanding Player for the 2003 season - something that neither Linden or Smyl accomplished.

Can you name a team out there that uses your criteria? Better skip Toronto - they "honored" Wendell Clark - very popular but injury prone. He only played 608 games for 260 goals and 441 points.

I didn't have a point, it was a simple question. But that's it?

I am not from Vancouver, and don't know, I have been maybe 30 games in Vancouver over the past years. I remember last year looking at a wall with pictures of former canucks and had a chuckle when I saw Tiger Williams, (who I have met a few years ago, he and I had a very funny conversation...LOL)

Anyway, I just looked up Naslunds Stats, he leads Vancouver players for total points..... (#2 Linden, #3 Smyl) and an see there is a strong case for him

But I agree, he isn't going to the NHL hall of fame...

Naslund had his good years here, but no where near # retirement!
Vancouver has had slim pickens but Smyl & Linden are deserving in my opinion. They represented the Canucks & wore their hearts on their sleeves, through the bad/good years.
The 3rd # retired was, or thought to be, was # 11, Wayne Maki. That bald headed acorn came in & took that #. It's got to be up there as one of the worst moves made. Pretty close to the Sundin move.:D

I don't think the Canucks should retire his number, but they should honour him.

There are only 98 numbers you can give out, so if 1 is actually forever locked, that person might have done something really spectacular (long playoff run).

Do the Canadiens or TML actually retire numbers? I mean since they've been around forever, you'd assume there won't be too many numbers left for players on the team.

Vancouver should just honour his name by like creating a separate "jersey" hanging, where the number is still in use and therefore isn't quite as high as like #12 or #16, but it will give fans a chance to celebrate Naslund's accomplishments.

Also, is Markus Naslund retiring from just the NHL or hockey in general? I would assume he would maybe like to play a couple of more years for MODO, make his way onto the 2010 team and then slowly ease into retirement.

Little side note: one of these guys could face up to 14 years in jail..... he will find out June 18..... How long, or if he goes to jail.... (that's if he doesn't appeal)

For those that don't already know..... Curious who??? -- (Click here)

I use to like Naslund as a player 5 years ago...but he is simply a floating sniper that lacks confidence and now is slowing down skating wise...

He just wants to hang out in Sweden with his family and probably do nothing. His net worth is probably 20 to 30 million USD.

Every player declines and in his last years in Vancouver he got stuck with some pretty crappy teams. Ok so what, he didn't play well with the Sedins... It's clear he wasn't the style of player they needed. He got stuck with some unrealistic expectations. Who knows what may be if the Steve Moore incident never happened, either way he's done great things for Vancouver and we should definitely honour him.

I'm on the fence about jersey retirement. If it happens, I'll cheer him. If it doesn't, I won't lose any sleep over it.
