I enjoy much of the humour that is shared on this board, but I find that the greatest pitfall of the written word is that crucial components of communication (tone, inflection - even context) are often not adequately conveyed and this can be problematic with regards to interpreting the material..
Thanks for these comments. I wholeheartedly agree with both of them. It took me a while to figure this out for myself.Right? Just about any discussion board is like this, though. Doesn't matter the subject matter. the subtleties of conversation/debate are lost.
There were a couple of times when I attempted to make some snide or witty remark in response to a post but ended up being misunderstood, attacked and even given a bit of timeout because the humour in my remark didn't carry through. Since then I've learned that it's better sometimes to just bite my tongue than it is to try and be wise.
I find also it sometimes takes much more strength of character to stay silent than it is to speak out. Unless I have something to share that will add to a discussion, rectify some untruth, or steer someone in the right direction, I tend to stay out of it. "Speech is silver; silence is golden" as the old saying goes.
I mainly stick to reviews now and try to help out my fellow pooner as best I can. I thought eclipca made some interesting comments at the start of this thread and I'm sorry to see that it's been hijacked. But I hope that doesn't deter other pooners from sharing their insights about the industry as I always find others' perspectives informative whether I agree or disagree with them or not.
Thanks again ladies for sharing. Two classy comments from two classy ladies.
