What would u do if u inherit this much money?? This guy continues workin his 35k a year forty hours per week job. His wife kepted her lame accounting job and does 50 hour weeks. I dont understand why they are so boring and continue to work. If i had that much dough id be travelling, pooning, expensive cars etc. Infact the couple are both bargain hunters and constantly cut coupons.

Your friend is smart, he liked his life and wants it to continue as it was, to enjoy what he built. NOw he just has to slowly deal with what has happened, the way he wants to, at his own pace... Believe it or not, excessive and un-earned money will more likely screw up his happiness than improve it...
On the other hand, if a person is unhappy/poor because of bad money management, the windfall will also be managed badly. Being given a lot of money is a huge obligation as it can also screw up the lives of others by giving them TOO MUCH un-earned money. If you don't understand what I am saying, then you would also be too inexperienced to handle the situation properly... A LOT of lottery winners wish they could go back to the way their life was before the win... There is more to life than money, possessions and paid-for sex... But - I know, I know, IT SURE WOULD BE NICE TO TRY... Now that's what really keeps you going -- The dream..! And if consumed in small portions it tastes much better, especially if you worked for it and deserve it..!

To me it sounds like he and his wife have their heads on straight. 6 million, properly invested, is enough to make a person very secure and very confident about setting a retirement date. 6 million isn't enough to retire at 30, travel continuously and live a lifestyle of conspicuous consumption.

Take a look at how fast some lottery winners have burned through as much as 17 million. The family in Quebec won the largest lottery prize to that date. It took less than 2 years for them to burn through it. They are back on welfare now. There is a guy and his wife in BC who burned through 5 million in 6 months. The only thing they have left is the tattoo on his back. They are back on welfare now.

The nice thing about having your house paid for and several million in blue chip investments is that you are working because you like to and not because you need to. It makes it a lot easier to go to work every day.

Really, six million is not that much. Buy one nice house in Vancouver with a water view and you could go through the whole lot.

But he can live off the interest alone...

say I give him 3% annually, he is still making roughly 180,000.00 a year...

I say he can live off that for the rest of his life...

If he makes 3% annually a year, he would be staying just above inflation...which avgs about 2.5% a yr. So basically, he is earning nothing and actually losing, since his interest income would be taxed. You need to earn min 7% a yr to be actually making money on your money.

The best bet is to put it into rental properties and live off the income. That also gives him something to do (managing and upkeep of the properties) which is important for a lot of reasons.

Meanwhile, the properties will go up in value over the long term (20+ years) allowing for a nice happy early retirement.

Nice Nest

The 1st thing I'd do is pay off all my debts and watch the F***in idiots/banks who didn't lend me money because I was a bad risk, scamble to get my business. Investing in property is I think the only way to go since there's only so much land available. Have a nest in the bank(s) and carry on with less stress. :) I would keep working only because after awhile you realize you can only travel and eat so much. The day you stop keeping busy is when you start getting OLD pretty quick. Enjoy life, spend some on your friends and more importantly on the many FINE sp's we have here in town. Don't forget, alot of people/family come out of the woodworks when there's $ signs attached to your head.:(

I think the first thing you should do is pay off your debts if you win money. That way if you blow it all you will at least owe no money.
I would probably invest at least half in an rrsp or something that I couldn't touch until I'm like 60.
I would buy a better car, but I wouldn't blow money for a super sexy sports mobile. I might buy a house, but not in Vancouver because that's expensive.
I would probably still have a job for something to do with my spare time.
I might go see some more sps, but with that kind of money I could just buy a wife.

I dont owe any money so im fine there. At the very least id quit my job and move somewhere warm and cheap. Id would poon once a month and lay on the beach with a cold drink in my hands. As for cars id get something under 100k. I absolutely hate workin for a living so I wouldnt blow away this dough.
