Sort of our own brash Trump-like Conservative Kevin O'Leary to run for leadership.

Uni lingual candidates rarely do well in Quebec so this one may be a non-starter and possibly entertaining. There are two more French language debates upcoming in March.

At least Trump has some business sense. O'Leary is a guy who got lucky and made his millions. He lost a lot more of other people's money with his investment plan.

Hopefully, he'll kill off the CConservative Party entirely.

If he does get the job and gets elected I'm guessing state dinners would be from Boston Pizza :brick:

Does O'Leary own shares in Boston Pizza?

Its the former RCMP Jim Treliving who owns Boston Pizza.

Truly a self made success story. :thumb:

but I'm not really sure if he's a suitable choice for being Prime Minister.
Guess that begs the question, exactly what makes a suitable PM or politician? I loathe the guy myself and it's easy to say he's nothing more than a reality star, but in the whole scope of shit, exactly how much higher are politicians on the totem pole of integrity than reality TV stars? Or is it the same thing.

Who enters politics in the 21st century? It's certainly not individuals looking to change things because only a naive idiot would even imagine that's possible. So what's left is opportunist types looking for the connections that political life brings (Rob or Doug Ford) or narcissists like Trump.

I hope the Conservative Party have the sense to realize that Canada is not merely a business.

I hope the Conservative Party have the sense to realize that Canada is not merely a business.
A good politician is concerned with the welfare of all his/her citizens, not just the members of their party or demographic.

Every single person in your country is a citizen that you are responsible for. Not just your rich friends. Those worthless junkies in back alleys, they are human beings as well. An escort barely making ends meet and trying to support herself is just as much a citizen as any rich businessman.

Being a politician has become a way to make yourself and your friends rich. Winnipeg just had a sickening regime of piggies at the trough. A perfect demonstration of why successful businessmen are not automatically good politicians. Some people get rich, not by being good human beings, but by being sociopaths and exploiters.

Unfortunately they are in short supply and rarely achieve a position where they are able to make a difference.

Jim is at this point majority shareholder....and owns some company stores outright. Not exactly self made. Original Boston Pizza was an Edmonton family joint. Jim bought it in partnership with another former member. Jim's father bankrolled his end of the deal even though Jim was a working man. He had a lot of help becoming a self made success story.:p

I really thought Trump would lose the united states election I was wrong .
The thing that both trump and O Leary share Is that they seem to be good sales people good not being a moral judgment here I think both of Trump and O Leary's fortunes. Where built upon selling and sales deals . I saw bits of the apprentice with Trump and bits of O Leary's show . Turned them both off as I could not stand the yelling and negative content . But both men seemed to value which contestant was able to make the most sales Unfortunate as it may be When people step into the voting booth. It is not logic or examination of policy. That determines who gets elected but which candidate That people like. That is which candidate did the best sales job and which they remember.
So Given the best sales person as the standard for the position . I think it is very possible that O' Leary could be our next prime Prime minister. .

Here is one mans take on trumps election . If O Leary becomes prime prime minister . Perhaps the same could be said about the Canadian election system .

Comes from Montreal, but can't speak French. Prefers to live in Boston. Basically, nobody there will vote for him as PM. All the other Cons have to do to sink him is have another French debate, since he waited until this one was over before launching his campaign.

There's another business tycoon in the race (Rick Peterson, from BC) who speaks French, but he's not a TV personality so there's no hype.

Yeah, but the conditions in the USA were ripe for something like that to happen. A entire swath of the population has been left behind because of corporate trade deals, career politicians, etc. And the elite types look down on these people as the "small people" so they rose up in numbers. I think a percentage of Trump supporters are redneck bigots. I think a just as large number of supporters were people just really sick and tired of the whole political system. Is it any different here? Look at the politics in BC, Alberta or Ontario. People are pissed off & rightly so.

I don't think O'Leary is going to win the leadership race & even if he did I don't think he'd win the election. There is too large of a swath of Canada that isn't going to embrace a guy like that (Quebec, Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa, East Coast, Vancouver/Victoria). And, isn't Trudeau really just a "reality TV star" of sorts? He's did very little in the past year regarding major issues but is still quite popular. Say what you want about JT, but he's a smart marketer just like Jack Layton was. He's used his reality TV star like appearance only he's combined it with a positive message & rang the bell of the selfie generation. The older, white generation just hates that shit because it works (though they were fine when Rob Ford did it). Trudeau, rightly or wrongly, is a pretty smart guy. He knows to pay attention to shit that matters to the average guy. Very few people will care he took an illegal helicopter ride to some place they never heard of. MANY people will care they can buy a bag of weed at Safeway. O'Leary doesn't have a chance.

Thank God he kept his mouth shut during the US elections, even when it looked like Clinton was a sure winner. Unfortunately Trump is the guy who likes to nurse grudges and keep score.

Yeah, in hindsight it looks pretty smart, just like when Chretien kept Canada out of Iraq. I know a lot of Conservatives think Trudeau is a puffball & "just wasn't ready" but he's a little smarter than people give him credit for. Right now I don't see the Conservatives really having anyone that could challenge him. Harper really wasn't that guy either, he only won because the Liberal competition was about as lame as you could possibly get.

Trump can live in his fantasy world and imagine he's King Trump. It'll last a bit but he'll come crashing down to reality. I think he underestimates just how much people hate him.
