For a long time now I have been thinking about moving to Toronto.
I have lived here in vancouver all of my life. I find some days that I am bored with this place.
I do have a good job, but I am getting tired of it. I am stuck, I can't move up in the company any more than I have.

I have a real desire for a change of scene.
I really have not done something like this before. Do I find somewhere to live first or find a job first.
I will sell my townhouse here, so money should not be a problem.
Is it expensive in Toronto. I would like to live in a Yaletown type area.
As you can see I have only been there once, and I was only 10 that time.

My girl friend will be moving there when she finishes UBC to start her career there.
I will not have anyone to sponge off, no relatives there.

Any ideas, what is the best way to do it?

Hmm, Vancouver, or THE CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSE?

If you're into big, smelly, dirty, cities, which have a massive "look at us" ego, go for it.

Way colder in the winter, way hotter in the summer. Shitty air quality much of the summer, far more so than Vancouver.

The best move ever made in my life was getting me the hell outta there.

Why anyone would move to Toronto by choice (esp. if they live in Vancouver) actually makes my head hurt. !
haha ha ! There is great food and great women here & as far as
accommodation goes it's a renter's market in Toronto due to a lot of condo development.

And it doesn't rain all the time.

Cost of living in Toronto is lower than in Vancouver. If you're looking to buy in the Toronto market, price shouldn't be a problem.

All the reasons you have given are valid reasons for moving on. But before you make your decisions, I suggest you and your girlfriend to spend a few weeks in Toronto first. Take two or three weeks off of work. Go to Toronto on a vacation. Check out different areas of the city and potential employers.

Ironhead, Toronto is an awesome city. Unfortunately, a lot of westerners have a very "anti-Toronto" attitude, which is both ignorant and unfounded, since most of them have never spent any significant amount of time there, let alone lived there during their adult lives.

I have PM'ed you a bunch of information with answers to your questions and more.

I've spent some considerable time in TO. It has some cool, eclectic neighborhoods, great restaurants, and all that culture (music, theatre). Plus it's easy to blow some big bank on escorts and the lap-dances at the peeler bars. My gripes with the place: the weather, the traffic, too big, and I found it difficult to meet new people there.

Lived there for 3 years and still go there way more than I would prefer due to business. HATE IT! Colder, windy and more snow in the winter, and humid in the summer. To each their own, though.

here's a suggestion ... rent your current place in Van (prices are just going to keep going up) and rent in TO ... if you like it, then make it a permanent move, if not, you have your place to come back to.

you may want to check out the burbs in TO ... oshawa, missisauga etc etc ...

the great thing about being there is that there are so many other places to go that are close by ... check out Vermont! you're close to New York, Chicago etc ... if the NHL is ever back on ice you get to see a lot of different teams! but you can also check out the NFL ...

take in Niagra (the escarpment is beautiful) ... take a trip to Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City ...

make it an adventure and when you're tired of it, you can at least say you did it all.

ps: rent a boat (book early) for a tour through the 1,000 Islands!

yes, its not Vancouver, but so what? there's a lot to see and do out East and when you come back you will see that the weather here is great, the scenery is great, but it really is a culturally boring place.

Was there once. Never wanted to come home so bad. The place is a shit hole full of rude people. Will never go again. Would not even stop there to even take a shit.

Pick your neighbourhood carefully. Given some inexplicable voting tendancy, there's a very good chance that your federal representative will be a Liberal crook.

On the other hand, that will likely mean that your neighbourhood gets federal millions to plant daisies. Each year.

I am still debating this and will be for a while. I have time on my side.

It is a big thing to do. I might plan to go back in the fall for a week and check it out.

Hey!!! maybe I will be the new King of Kensington!!!! Ha HA HA

OHH yeah I have to learn to go for a walk up Yonge street every sat. night
like everyone else does.

I lived in toronto for 12 years and absolutely loved every minute of it.

I think its very different being in Toronto for a week or two on business, and actually living there. When I'm back now I find it tiring and exhausting and am usually glad to get back to the Peg. Having said that, if I could afford the housing prices ... moving from Winnipeg would not be like moving from Van .... I would move back in a second.

I'd loose my shirt living in Toronto.

It would have to be a pretty high paying gig - 'cause there are so many SP's to pick from.

O.K. ... there can be no argument with that.

Places worse than Winnipeg ... mmmm ... Lethbridge, Regina, Thunder Bay, North Bay, Sudbury .... there might be a few others.

Places better than Winnipeg ... shit ... too many to count.

Vancouver is a beautiful city and if I had to choose Vancouver or Toronto I'd probably choose Van. In part, though, that's for the same reasons that Ironhead is thinking of the move to Toronto. I know Toronto really well, but I've only been to Vancouver a few times. It would be exciting to get to know a new city ... esp. one with such a beautiful location.

If I had to move out of E-town, I would definitely choose Vancouver. It's expensive compared to Alberta, however (although the COL been climbing here too). I'd consider moving to Calgary, but their SP scene is the suck.

Housing is so inexpensive in Winnipeg, that it makes it hard to contemplate moving to someplace like Vancouver or Toronto.
